SUNDAY SCRIPTURES
THEME: THE COMMAND TO LOVE
Obeying the Ten Commandments gets a lot of notice in
current media; less so, the command to love as God in
Christ has loved us. That commandment often leads us
to live and work for the lowly and marginalized in our
world.
Wisdom 3:1-9 The souls of the just are in the hand of
God.
Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd.
Romans 6:3-9 As Christ died and rose, so shall we.
John 6:37-40 God’s will is eternal life.

ble according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their
childhood parish, where they attended school or received
sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area
or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all
individuals to be active members of their local Catholic
faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are
neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish family, and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors.
Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences. Here at St. Ursula, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the priest to registered members of
the parish who are practicing Catholics and who meet
the above criteria.

CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES
At the 10:00 AM Mass this past Sunday Fr. Bob installed
five candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The
Candidates pledged to work with our Religious Education
program and the parents also pledged to support these
children in fulfilling the Confirmation requirements. We
ask the Parish to please keep these Candidates in your
prayers.
Afterwards at the Family Mass reception the Religious
Education program raised $149.00 for the Parish.
A NOTE ABOUT BECOMING SPONSORS FOR BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION
It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism
or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an
“other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why
sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or
older, having received Confirmation and currently living a
good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that
person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor
is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two
for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the
other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by
a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a
sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the
individual must be a current parishioner of the particular
parish where the certification is being sought, and be
known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing
Catholic, attending Mass there regularly. Unfortunately,
at times, family members or friends are chosen to be
sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligi-

Election Day is Coming -- Make Sure to Vote as a

The Church wishes to help form consciences in political
life and to stimulate greater insight into the authentic requirements of justice as well as greater readiness to act
accordingly, even when this might involve conflict with
situations of personal interest….The Church cannot and
must not take upon herself the political battle to bring
about the most just society possible. She cannot and
must not replace the State. Yet at the same time she
cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight
for justice.
-- Pope Benedict, God is Love.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK
October 28th - Sts Simon and Jude, Apostles
Simon, died 1st c.; called the Canaanite” and also, “the
Zealot,” an anti-Roman party; possibly preached in Egypt
and Persia; mentioned in the Roman Canon.
Jude, or Thaddeus (“Courageous”), died 1st c.; may have
preached in Palestine and Persia; mentioned in the Roman Canon; patron of those in despair, or in hopeless
situations (perhaps because of the similarity of his name
with that of Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus and despaired).
November 1st - All Saints Day
First mentioned in the 4th c. Eastern feast of all Martyrs
(13 May) and attested to by St. Ephrem of Edessa (died
373), this feast came to be celebrated on other days, as
well in the East, e.g., Easter Friday, and the Sunday after
Pentecost, the day of its observance in some places in
the West. In 609/610, the Roman Pantheon was dedicated on 13 May under the title S Maria ad Martyres.
Many see in this the origin of All Saints Day. For reasons
which are unclear, Pope Gregory IV (827-844) transferred
the feast from May to 1 November, adopting perhaps the
English-Gallican practice dating from the first quarter of
the 8th c.
November 2nd - All Souls Day
Rooted in ancient Christian tradition (2nd c. and Tertullian),
St. Odilo of Cluny (1 Jan.) established a memorial of all
the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome in
the 13th c.

LOVE SHOWN IN ACTION
Do you receive the word of God with joy as the Thessalonians did? Their faith showed in their actions. They
became models for other believers.
The first reading tells us to put our faith into action.
This passage is part of a long list of ordinances God commanded the Israelites to observe. God will judge us by
how we treat our neighbors. God will hear the cries of any
whom we neglect or mistreat and will come to their defense.
In today’s Gospel the Pharisees put the question of
God’s law to Jesus. “Which commandment of the law is
the greatest?” (Matthew 22:36) How could he possibly
choose from all the detailed commandments the Jews
observed? He was sure to offend somebody by his answer! Of course, Jesus went right to the heart of the matter. Love is the greatest commandment—love of God and
love of neighbor. Everything else is based on this.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Sadly, one of the most difficult reforms of the Second
Vatican Council for the Church to embrace has been one
of the most thorough and beautiful: the sacrament of penance. Because it is individual and private, it has been difficult for the changes to take root. Sometimes a priest may
be grounded in the earlier form, and at other times the
penitent may resist the priest’s attempt to blend in the
proper texts and rituals.
Perhaps because the new form is almost identical in
structure to the old, it has been difficult to insititute. It may
also be true that with the liturgy in English now, it is far
more clear that the Eucharist, too, is a “sacrament of reconciliation.”
It is certainly true that there are different skills and
gifts in ministry, and experienced penitents know that not
all priests are equally at ease in this sacramental encounter. Sometimes a difficult experience can drive people
away from a liturgy that is spiritually rich and rewarding.
Yet we know that one bad meal seldom puts people off
restaurants forever: the dinner gong tends to dispel bad
memories, and so we try again. Individual confession and
absolution is for us both treasure and tradition. If you
haven’t been for a while, consider coming back to praise
God for this gift of mercy.
