A Prayer for Hong Kong
Lord God, we ask for your blessing on the people of the Hong
Kong SAR: at this time of divided opinions strengthen those who
work for mutual understanding; make our hearts open to hear
and embrace those who hold different views from ourselves; and
may our leaders work together to seek the common good. We
pray in the name of one who spread healing and reconciliation
among all people, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, you crown the year with your goodness and you give us the fruits of
the earth in their season: grant that we may use them to your glory, for the relief
of those in need and for our own well-being; through Jesus Christ your Son our
Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen.
Post Communion for Harvest Festival
Lord of the harvest, with joy we have offered our thanksgiving for your love in
creation and have shared in the bread and wine of the kingdom: by your grace
plant within us a reverence for all that you give us and make us generous and
wise stewards of the good things we enjoy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
First Reading: Deuteronomy 8.7-18
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing
streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, a
land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive
trees and honey, a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will
lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine
copper. You shall eat your fill and bless the LORD your God for the good land that
he has given you.
Take care that you do not forget the LORD your God, by failing to keep his
commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you
today. When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them,
and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is
multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself,
forgetting the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of
the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an
arid waste-land with poisonous* snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for
you from flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors
did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. Do
not say to yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gained me
this wealth.’ But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power
to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 9.6-15
The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows
bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up
your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by
always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good
work. As it is written,
‘He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;
his righteousness* endures for ever.’
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply
your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be
enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving
to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs
of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the
testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the
gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all
others, while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace
of God that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Then Jesus told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly.
And he thought to himself, “What should I do, for I have no place to store my
crops?” Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger
ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul,
Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”
But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of
you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” So it is with those
who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’
He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what
you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food,
and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap,
they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much
more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single
hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that,
why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither
toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one
of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and
tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of
little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to
drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

Second Reading: Luke 13.22-30
Jesus went through one town and village after another, teaching as he made his
way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, ‘Lord, will only a few be saved?’ He said
to them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to
enter and will not be able. When once the owner of the house has got up and shut
the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, “Lord,
open to us”, then in reply he will say to you, “I do not know where you come
from.” Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank with you, and you taught in
our streets.” But he will say, “I do not know where you come from; go away from
me, all you evildoers!” There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see
Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and
you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from east and west, from
north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God. Indeed, some are last who
will be first, and some are first who will be last.’

programme offered by Christian Listening Hong Kong Ltd. (material from UK’s
Acorn Christian Healing Foundation). Learn the skills involved in listening
and apply them in your daily life to deepen your spirituality and improve the
quality of your relationships.
Mrs Linda Lui will lead her team of tutors to give 5 talks at St John’s Cathedral

Guest Preacher at 11.45am
This morning we welcome back to St John's Professor Donn Morgan, the
Professor of Old Testament and Director of the Center for Anglican Learning and
Leadership at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He was
born in New York and educated at Oberline College, Yale University Divinity
School and Claremont Graduate University.
His special research and writings include biblical wisdom literature, the development and functions of scripture, theological education and leadership.
Dr Morgan is no stranger to Hong Kong; he has studied and taught at Chinese
University (1992 and 1996) and Ming Hua Theological College (2012).
Guest Conductor at 9.00am Sung Eucharist - Larry Monson
Professor Emeritus of Choral Music, Larry Monson’s 40+ years career has
included full-time Minister of Music positions and College/University teaching in
the US and Europe. Monson’s guest conducting, workshops and coaching of
vocal/choral ensembles in the US, Europe and Asia bring him often to Hong Kong
coaching Metro Vocal Group.

The Compass Rose Society
The Compass Rose Society is a group of 300 members of Anglicans/
Episcopalians, of individuals, parishes, chapters, dioceses and
institutions from all over the world. Together they seek to support the
ministry of the Archbishop of Canterbury within our Anglican
Communion and have so far raised seven million US dollars to
support the work of the mission.
St John’s Cathedral has been a member of the Compass Rose Society since 2008
and the Dean will be representing us at its annual meeting in London from 12th13th October.
During Matthias’ trip from 11th-21st October, he will also visit the cathedral
churches of Coventry, Southwark and Christ Church, Oxford. He will meet with
the Archbishops of Canterbury’s Canon for Peace and Reconciliation to discuss
how we may promote peace and concord in light of the current situation in Hong
Kong. Please remember the Dean in your prayers, that he may have a safe and
productive journey.
Congratulations to Discovery Bay Church Tennis Team.
The Tennis team won the inaugural Goodwill Cup at the recent Charity Cup
competition in Discovery Bay. The Goodwill Cup is awarded to the team who
raises the most money for charity.

Wine and Beer Garden Appeal
The Michaelmas Fair Wine and Beer Garden has become a traditional
gathering place for fairgoers to have a drink, relax and chat.
We are now in need of a new wine inventory and are depending on the
congregation to supply wine from their homes or businesses.
This year we held a successful fine wine auction at a Michaelmas Fair
fund raising dinner. The auctioned wines had been donated to the
Wine and Beer Garden over the past few years.
Please let us have any wines you wish to donate, from one bottle to a
case. If the bottle is a fine wine and you wish to be recognized for your
contribution please let us know your name, and the name of the wine.
Your bottles may be left in the Cathedral office and marked ‘Wine and
Beer Garden’.
