Post Communion for Remembrance Sunday God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. First Reading: Wisdom 6.12-16 Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for she will be found sitting at the gate. To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding, and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought. All This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 70 1. Haste thee, O God, to deliver me : make haste to help me, O Lord. 2. Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul : let them be turned backward and put to confusion that wish me evil. 3. Let them for their reward be soon brought to shame : that cry over me, There, there. 4. But let all those that seek thee be joyful and glad in thee : and let all such as delight in thy salvation say alway, The Lord be praised. 5. As for me, I am poor and in misery : haste thee unto me, O God. 6. Thou art my helper, and my redeemer : O Lord, make no long tarrying. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. 4 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4.13-end We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord for ever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. All This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Reading: Matthew 25.1-13 Jesus spoke this parable to the disciples: 1‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, “Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.” Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the wise replied, “No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.” And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, “Lord, lord, open to us.” But he replied, “Truly I tell you, I do not know you.” Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.’ All This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Psalm 91 (11.45am) 1. Whoso dwelleth under the defence of the most High : shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2. I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope, and my strong hold : my God, in him will I trust. 3. For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter : and from the noisome pestilence. 4. He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers : his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5. Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night : nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6. For the pestilence that walketh in darkness : nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day. 7. A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand : but it shall not come nigh thee. 5 8. Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold : and see the reward of the ungodly. 9. For thou, Lord, art my hope : thou hast set thine house of defence very high. 10. There shall no evil happen unto thee : neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee : to keep thee in all thy ways. 12. They shall bear thee in their hands : that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. 13. Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder : the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet. 14. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him : I will set him up, because he hath known my Name. 15. He shall call upon me, and I will hear him : yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour. 16. With long life will I satisfy him : and shew him my salvation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. First Reading (11.45am): Deuteronomy 17.14-end When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me’, you may indeed set over you a king whom the LORD your God will choose. One of your own community you may set as king over you; you are not permitted to put a foreigner over you, who is not of your own community. Even so, he must not acquire many horses for himself, or return the people to Egypt in order to acquire more horses, since the LORD has said to you, ‘You must never return that way again.’ And he must not acquire many wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; also silver and gold he must not acquire in great quantity for himself. When he has taken the throne of his kingdom, he shall have a copy of this law written for him in the presence of the levitical priests. It shall remain with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, diligently observing all the words of this law and these statutes, neither exalting himself above other members of the community nor turning aside from the commandment, either to the right or to the left, so that he and his descendants may reign long over his kingdom in Israel. Here endeth the First Reading. Second Reading (11.45am): 1 Timothy 2.1-7 My dearly beloved, 1I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all - this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Here endeth the Second Reading. 6 Prayers Anglican Cycle of Prayer Please pray for The Church of Bermuda and The Rt Revd Nicholas Dill.
