The Collect, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music
for 6.00pm service
The Collect for Christ the King
Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he
might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the
Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at
his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever.
Post Communion Prayer for Christ the King
Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing
forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
First Reading: Ezekiel 34.11-16, 20-24
Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.
As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I
will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have
been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from
the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their
own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses,
and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and
the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in
good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the
Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up
the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will
destroy. I will feed them with justice.
Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: I myself will judge between the fat
sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and
butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and
wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge
between sheep and sheep.
I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them:
he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and
my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the LORD, have spoken.
All
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 95.1-7
1. O come, let us sing unto the Lord : let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our
salvation.
2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving : and shew ourselves glad in
him with psalms.
3. For the Lord is a great God : and a great King above all gods.
4. In his hand are all the corners of the earth : and the strength of the hills is his
also.
5. The sea is his, and he made it : and his hands prepared the dry land.
4
6. O come, let us worship and fall down : and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7. For he is the Lord our God : and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep
of his hand.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
Second Reading: Ephesians 1.15-end
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints,
and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my
prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give
you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the
eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has
called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and
what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to
the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name
that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all
things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church,
which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
All
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 25.31-end
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the
angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be
gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd
separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and
the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you
that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and
you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was
naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in
prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was
it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to
drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked
and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and
visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to
one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Then he
will say to those at his left hand, “You that are accursed, depart from me into the
eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave
me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and
you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in
prison and you did not visit me.” Then they also will answer, “Lord, when was it
that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and
did not take care of you?” Then he will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you
did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” And these will go
away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’
All
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Offertory Hymn (9.00am): Hail Redeemer, King divine!
Hail Redeemer, King divine!
Priest and Lamb, the throne is thine;
King, whose reign shall never cease,
Prince of everlasting peace.
Angels, saints and nations sing :
‘Praise be Jesus Christ our King;
Lord of life, earth, sky and sea,
King of love on Calvary.’
King whose name creation thrills,
Rule our minds, our hearts, our wills;
Till in peace, each nation rings
With thy praises, King of kings.
King most holy, King of truth,
Guide the lowly, guide the youth;
Christ thou King of glory bright
Be to us eternal light.
Shepherd-King, o'er mountains steep
Homeward bring the wandering sheep;
Shelter in one royal fold
States and kingdoms, new and old.
Eucharistic King, what love
Draws thee daily from above.
Clad in signs of bread and wine;
Feed us, lead us, keep us thine.

Notices
Welcome to St John’s
Visitors are always welcome at our services. If you are new to Hong Kong and/or
St John’s, do make yourself known at the Welcome Table where you can find
someone who will help with information about our life and ministry here.
After Service Refreshments
Refreshments are served after the 9.00am service in the Li Hall.
This morning’s Guest Preacher
We warmly welcome Archbishop Michael Jackson as the preacher at our 9.00am
Sung Eucharist this morning. Archbishop Michael has been Archbishop of
Dublin and Bishop of Glendalough since 2011, having previously been Bishop of
Clogher since 2002, both in the Church of Ireland.
He is the President of the Dublin University Far Eastern Mission and in this
capacity he is attending the episcopal consecration of Canon Timothy Kwok as
bishop here at St John’s later this afternoon. He is accompanied by Dr Kerry
Houston, Treasurer of DUFEM, and himself a frequent visitor to St John’s and
the Province.
Last year Archbishop Michael graciously welcomed Archbishop Paul on a
fraternal visit to Ireland and has been instrumental in fostering strong links of
friendship and fellowship between the Church of Ireland and the Hong Kong
Sheng Kung Hui.
Baptism & Confirmation
Sacrament of Baptism: We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism and
administer First Holy Communion for candidates from our ‘Genesis’ and ‘I
Believe’ courses this weekend. These candidates, and some of their children, will
be baptised by the cathedral clergy and presented to the Archbishop for
Confirmation at a later in November.
Candidates from the ‘I Believe’ Course will be baptised on Saturday 22nd
November at the 6.00pm Cantonese Eucharist and candidates from the
‘Genesis’ Course will be baptised this morning at the 11.45am English
Eucharist. Individual infants from the cathedral congregation will also be
baptised at the 11.45am service.
Sacrament of Confirmation: On Saturday 29th November at 6.00pm
the Archbishop will preside at the Sung Eucharist and celebrate the Sacrament of
Confirmation for those candidates already baptised. Candidates from both the
‘I believe’ and ‘Genesis’ courses will be confirmed at this service.
We hope that members of the Cathedral Council and congregations will make a
special effort to attend the Confirmation Eucharist and welcome their new
brothers and sisters into our cathedral family.

Kong Sheng Kung Hui and visiting Bishops from the Anglican Communion, will
consecrate Canon Timothy Kwok to the Order of Bishop in the Holy Catholic
Church. The service will take place here at St John’s Cathedral and will start
at 4.30pm. Bishop Timothy will serve as Bishop of the Diocese of Eastern
Kowloon and will be enthroned in his own Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity,
Kowloon the following day at 8.00pm. Please keep Canon Kwok and his family in
your prayers at this time of preparation.

in December, the monthly Taizé Evening Prayer Service will be in recess until
January. Apologies to those who regularly attend this service.

To celebrate American Thanksgiving Day there will be a service held here at St
John’s on Thursday 27th November at 12.30pm. The service will be

World AIDS Day 2014
The global theme for World AIDS Day from 2011-2015, as selected by the World
AIDS Campaign, is ‘Getting to Zero.’ Backed by the United Nations, the ‘Getting
to Zero’ campaign focuses on the goals of zero new infections, zero
discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.
World AIDS day is celebrated every year on 1st December. It is an opportunity
for individuals and groups all over the world to come together to remember, and
demonstrate worldwide support to people living with and people affected by HIV
and AIDS. It is the one day in the year where issues surrounding HIV and AIDS
can take centre stage.
The SJC HIV Education Centre together with The Hong Kong Christian Council
have produced a World AIDS Sunday Service. It will be broadcasted on RTHK
Radio 4, 11.05am on Sunday, 30th November. You can also listen to the
programme after it is on air at http://programme.rthk.hk/channel/presenters/

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ST JOHN’S ?
As a way to help us understand our Cathedral Community and its ministry,
there will be a feature article in the Pew Bulletin every fourth Sunday of the
month.
I joined St John's 18 months ago, when I moved to Hong Kong. Since then, I have
been a member of the Cathedral's Communications and Publicity committee
which Dean Matthias founded last year. Before I arrived in Hong Kong, I was
Public Affairs Manager for Transport for London, responsible for engaging with
politicians, community groups and businesses and voluntarily served a churchrun homeless project as their PR manager.
With a background in communications, I became the Cathedral's web-master
early in 2014, helping complete the new St John's website project which Fr Nigel,
Shirley Fu and Joey Fan worked so hard on. I hope you are enjoying the new site,
which is easy to navigate, provides more information about events and includes
exciting new features such as the online tour.
Born in Swansea, I was baptised and confirmed into the Church in Wales, where
my parents have long been active members of All Souls' Church, Tycoch and
where my mother is currently church warden. I am grateful to have been brought
up in a Christian family and during my teenage years, my faith was bolstered
through my deanery youth group, experiencing retreats, meditation, and social
action, beyond the scope of my parish's weekly services.
My college chaplaincy picked up where youth group left off, introducing me to
both the simplicity of Taizé worship and the poetry of the Book of Common
Prayer. This time also allowed me to play an active part in the running of a faith
community, as the students were responsible for much of the chapel's day-to-day
life.
In London, I quickly gravitated to Southwark Cathedral, situated on the South
Bank. The Cathedral has played its part in the development of Southwark
Diocese's distinct social witness and allowed me to make several pilgrimages to
Taizé and serve as an intercessor, server, Eucharistic minister and Fairtrade
convenor.
In 2010, I was elected as one of Southwark's lay members on the Church of
England's General Synod, a position I hold until next year. Recent years have
been challenging for the Church of England, with divisions over the consecration
of women as bishops and deteriorating relations between some parts of the
Anglican Communion.
Nevertheless, I am filled with optimism as I have seen how, despite years of bad
media and dwindling congregation numbers, the Church still inspires a
tremendous amount of goodwill, even in people who are not regular attenders yet
want to see the Church speak out on issues of equality, human rights and social
justice. Whether it is in Hong Kong, England or elsewhere, I believe as Christians
we must always be ready to speak truth to power, be a church for the poor and
joyful witnesses to the Good News of the Gospel - that we are loved, and Christ
calls us to love.

A Prayer for Hong Kong
Lord God, we ask for your blessing on the people of the Hong Kong
SAR: at this time of divided opinions strengthen those who work for
mutual understanding; make our hearts open to hear and embrace
those who hold different views from ourselves; and may our leaders
work together to seek the common good. We pray in the name of one
who spread healing and reconciliation among all people, Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
We are here to help
