Prayers for the Family
The III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of
Bishops, scheduled to take place from 5 to 19 October will
focus on the topic: The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the
Context of Evangelization.
We are invited to pray for this intention during during the
synod itself. In Rome, in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major,
prayers will be recited each day in the chapel of the icon, Salus
Populi Romani. The faithful, individually but above all in
families, are invited to join in these prayers.
The suggested prayers include the following Prayer to the Holy
Family for the Synod, composed by Pope Francis.
The recitation of the Holy Rosary is also recommended for the
duration of the synodal assembly.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
in you we contemplate
the splendour of true love,
to you we turn with trust.

grant that our families too
may be places of
communion and prayer,

Reflecting on God’s Word
As Catholics we are invited to “come to the
feast” at significant moments in our lives.
Baptisms, First Communions, marriages,
ordinations, and funeral rites are all commonly
celebrated within the feast of the Eucharist.
The clothes we wear—from the baptismal
garment to the funeral pall, from fancy
wedding garb to simple white albs—reflect our
baptismal commitment to be faithful to Christ
until we come to the eternal heavenly feast that
our eucharistic celebrations anticipate. All are
invited to come to the feast. All are invited to
dress in the garment of Christ. Not all respond
to the invitation.
It has often been asked
what would happen if,
some Sunday morning,
praying as we always do
for Christ to come again,
Christ actually did return.
Would we come to his
feast? Would we prefer our
small private gathering to
the huge mass of people
we don’t really want to know? Would we be
found wearing the garment of faithfulness we
were given in baptism? Where would we be
“on that day”?

Living God’s Word
Over the past few weeks the scriptures have
provided us with a feast of images of God’s
abundant mercy. Today’s image of the
heavenly banquet both completes the picture
of God’s generosity and shifts our attention to
our response to God’s generous invitation.

Como católicos estamos invitados a “venir a la fiesta”

bautismos, las primeras comuniones, los matrimonios,
las ordenaciones y las exequias normalmente se
celebran dentro de la celebración de la Eucaristía. La
ropa que nos ponemos —desde la vestidura bautismal
hasta el sudario, desde el sofisticado atuendo de bodas
hasta las sencillas albas blancas— refleja nuestro
compromiso bautismal
de ser fieles a Cristo hasta
que lleguemos al banquete
celestial que nuestras
celebraciones eucarísticas
anticipan. Todos están
invitados al banquete.

todos responden
a la invitación.

pregunta de lo qué pasaría
si una mañana de domingo, mientras oramos como

BAUTISMOS
Si desean bautizar, la próxima clase para la preparación de
Bautismo será el día lunes, 03 de Noviembre, a las 7:00 pm en
el Salón de Jóvenes (Youth Center). Clases de Bautismo son el
Primer Lunes de cada mes, solamente que haiga cambios y no se
pueda ese día, se cambiara la fecha. Es Necesario que todos los
que van a asistir a la clase de Bautismo de Registrarse primero
en la oficina de la misión. La oficina está abierta Lunes a Viernes
de 9:00am-5:00pm, excepto los Miércoles de 12:00pm-5:00pm.
Las clases serán los domingos en la mañana en la escuelita
de la misión, de 10:30 hasta el mediodía. Nos reuniremos
dos o tres veces al mes dependiendo en los días festivos.
La Siguiente clase será el domingo 19 de octubre.

Restorative Partners is a group dear
to our hearts. Several programs
led by this busy group are — and
have been — underway in the jail
system. We ask that you check
your cupboards for any sewing
fabric, wool, knitting needles or
crochet hooks, yarn or thread that
you hopefully would donate. The
women in the jail have created
beautiful handiwork which they
have donated to worthy causes-they are always in need of supplies.
There is now a well stocked library
in the jail due to the generosity of
our local and sister parishes. We will
probably never be able to appreciate
how much the inmates benefit!
Any sewing materials will be most
welcomed by Restorative Partners
at the Mission, or call for things to
be picked up if you wish: 544-6267.

$38,275, which is just over 96% of
our Diocesan goal of $40,000. Any
monies pledged over that amount
will be returned to our parish.

The Diocesan Respect Life office is offering workshops that are knowledgeable,
encouraging and well presented on the subject of Natural Family Planning. The

of the California Association of Natural Family Planning.

given us. All money collected on Friday mornings will be distributed to
those in need as part of our Tithe of Time, Talent, and Treasure. Last year
our students very generously raised money and donated time and treasures
to assist many organizations including the parish Giving Tree program,
Operation Rice Bowl of the Catholic Relief Services and Get on the Bus.
Old Mission Catholic School is currently accepting applications for preschool
through eighth grade. Our entire school community is dedicated to the
development of socially responsible citizens for the twenty-first century who are
spiritually empowered, academically enriched, and morally accountable for their

October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Those of us whose loved ones have
passed away or battle this terrible disease know the devastating effects that they
face every day. We are challenged to find hope and bring comfort when we are
struggling to make sense of it ourselves. We hope you too will find a moment to
pray in solidarity for those whose lives are linked with ours through their suffering.
Every October we make our Pink Memory book available. It holds many names
of loved ones whose lives have been touched by the suffering and battle that is
Cancer. We at the Gift Shop pray for those whose names are entered there on
a daily basis. Please feel free to come in and add a name to our Memory book
and join the many others who have shared with us. We are also making pocket
Rosaries, Rosary bracelets, and Rosaries that you can pass on to someone you love.
There will be healing prayers and healing Saint Medals as well that you might take
to someone in need.
If you haven’t been in to visit us lately this is a nice time to visit. The crowds of
summer are gone and as much as we enjoy the excitement there is something to be
said for the quiet. We will be looking forward to Advent and the Christmas season.
In the meantime we enjoy this short respite and use it for prayer and reflection.
The Gift Shop is open 7 days a week, from 9-5PM. Come in and browse, sit a
while and read – listen to the music – share a moment of fellowship. Our staff
is knowledgeable and always eager to assist you whether you are looking for a
special gift or just looking. We welcome you as always.

For our six speakers and multiple helpers who made the
“Breaking the Bonds of Human Trafficking” a success. Our
audience expressed graditude for the speakers who gave them
a much broader understanding of the problem, possible
solutions, and where we as a faith based community fit into
those solutions.
A special “thanks” to Carrisa Phelps for bringing together a
panel of experts and delivering an inspirational opening talk.
A “thank you” also for the Social Justice Ministries and the
office of Bishop Garcia working behind the scenes. I am
sorry for not listing all of the individuals who helped but
there are too many to name.
A full house, a video conference with other parishes, along
with refreshments were icing on the cake.
