Most recently, we welcomed Dr. Hernandez on as our Medical Director, effective August 1st As a well respected physician in the community and at our area hospitals, we are excited to have him on our team. Additionally, Sherry Norton, ARNP has joined Greystone Health Network and is at Greenbriar at least 2 days every week. She is able to work as an extension to some of the physicians and visit with our members on a regular basis. She is a vital part of our team. Her mother worked as a housekeeper and her father worked in the groves. Rutha attended school in Wildwood and later attended night school, while babysitting during the day. Following school Rutha went to work in a restaurant as a dishwasher and worked her way up to manager. She also became a manager of Dunkin Donuts. Rutha married and later moved back in with her mother. When she passed away Rutha worked at the Turnpike as a casher and did so for the next 25 years. When Rutha’s brother became ill, she stayed home and cared for him until he passed away. About 3 years ago, Rutha moved to Bradenton to be closer to her family. She has a nephew and his wife that live here. Today, Rutha remains very active and loves to be around other people. One of her favorite pass times is watching movies while munching on popcorn in the Recreation room. She also enjoys our coffee bar, playing Bingo and our entertainers that come in to preform. Rutha is one of our members that makes our house a home! Associate of the Month: Marjani Jones By: Deborah Cornish Marjani Jones is our Speech Therapist. She has worked at Greenbriar for 1 1/2 years. She was born in Jacksonville FL. When her parents started a new church, she moved with her family to Bradenton. She graduated from Manatee High and went on to attend college at FSU ( 4 years) & USF (2 years.) She married Letherio Jones Sr. and together they have 2 children. Letherio Jr. age 14 and LeNae age 13. In her spare time she loves to read, write, study music & volunteer at her local church. Marjani possesses excellent communication skills and touches the heart of every member she works with. Her moto “ When you wake up, get up and when you get up, do something productive! By: Deborah Cornish, Recreation Director The 6-1 guard was the last of the Lincoln basketball greats before integration into Manatee County. Neil “Chip” was born in Bradenton FL. He has 2 younger brothers & 2 older sisters. Not being allowed to leave his yard as his mother worked, he and his Chip with his Magic Balloons brother made a basket ball hoop out of a old bicycle rim. They played on the dirt. There was no concrete. Going back & forth from school was a Youth Center he passed by daily. One day he went in & started playing basketball with the older guys. He received punishment from Mama for being late and getting his school clothes dirty. After the 4th punishment, he was asked to change clothes after school and then he could go to the Youth Center to play basketball. Chip played with the older guys who would beat him around a lot. The day came, with a lot of practice, that they couldn’t touch him. Chip states that you have to take a whippin to get to where you want to go and you learn from your mistakes. With his mother’s approval Chip played for the Jr. Varsity team ( while in 8th grade) and before the year was over, he was on the Varsity team. In 10th grade Chip went to state with his team & was voted the most valuable player. In his final year, his team made it to state again. They were loosing by 19 points and Chip went wild! He holds the record in Manatee County: 61 points, School record in the championship game & 58 points, State record. He averaged 26 points per game his senior year. Chip went on to college & finished his career at the University of Tampa. He even had an offer from the Harlem Globetrotters. Chip has been inducted into the National Negro High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Because of a leg injury, Chip started teaching children how to play basketball at the 13th Ave. Youth Center, the very one where he had went as a child. He has used his many talents to better the lives of others and to even make them smile. He wears many hats. Today he has his own business: Magic Balloons, African Beauty Products & Black Art. He enjoys spending time with his family and is very well known in our community. “We have a major problem in our community with our youth.” Chip feels it is his duty to change it. Physical Therapist are experts in improving mobility and motion, and pain-free movement is crucial to your quality of life, to earn a living , to pursue your favorite leisure activity and so much more. Physical Therapists design treatment plans for the patient’s individual goals and needs. Here at Greenbriar we do in patient and out patient Physical therapy. As you are visiting your loved ones here and feel they may benefit for Physical Therapy in any way please notify their nurse to refer them to the Physical therapy department. From Gloria’s Kitchen: Submitted by : Gloria White Lime Cake Ingredients  18.25oz package Lemon cake mix  1 1/3 cups Vegetable oil  4 eggs  1 3oz package Lime flavor Jello mix  ¾ cup Orange Juice Frosting Ingredients  ½ cup butter  1 8oz package cream cheese  3 tablespoons fresh lime juice  4 cups confectioner’s sugar Directions Combine cake mix, Jello, oil, eggs, and orange juice. Pour into 3 8 inch pans. Bake accordingly to instructions on box. Allow to cool. Directions Beat the butter and cream cheese until fluffy. Add lime juice and confectioner’s sugar mix well. 7 Greystone Gets Iced! By Tori Couch Greystone is committed to worthwhile causes, and this past month supported ALS through the Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping the nation. The ALS challenge is issued when individuals or organizations pour a bucket of ice water over their head(s) and challenge others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS within twenty-four hours. You may have seen organizations or famous individuals taking the challenge as well as donating—increasing support and publicity for the cause. Find Greystone on the Web! ALS stands for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS leads to paralysis and even death. We challenged our facilities to donate and participate in this phenomenon. For each facility that took the challenge, Greystone made a donation in their name to the cause.
