BSocSc Sociology What you will study This document gives you a flavour of what you might study in Sociology at Manchester. Each year of your degree you need to take units that add up to 120 credits. Each unit is made up of 10 or 20 credits. This reflects the amount of work involved, so for every one credit you should do approximately 10 hours of work (eg lectures, tutorials, office hours and independent study). Each of the course units below has pre-requisites – other course units which you need to have taken the year before. You can find information about these by clicking on the particular course unit information pages. The actual units taught will depend on the availability of staff. Sociology Options Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 A full interactive version of this course structure can be found online at: http://bit.ly/socyps 1 Year 1 In your first year on the BSocSc Sociology programme you will take 120 credits overall (or six course units) You will take three compulsory course units: Course unit Researching Culture and Society From Modernity to Postmodernity I From Modernity to Postmodernity II Credits 20 20 20 As well as three optional course units: Course unit Media, Culture & Society 1 Sociology of Personal Life British Society in a Globalising World Media, Culture & Society 2 Work, Organisations and Society Credits 20 20 20 20 20 You can also take up to 20 units from outside Sociology instead of one of the optional course units; this could include another social science, such as politics or social anthropology or a language through the LEAP scheme (Language Experience for All Programmes). You can find information about the languages that you can choose to study through: www.ulc.manchester.ac.uk/languages/leap/ 2 Year 2 In your second year you will again take 120 credits You will take two compulsory course units: Course unit Qualitative Research Design & Methods The Survey Method in Social Research Credits 20 20 You will then be able to choose another four optional course units from Sociology Course unit Sociology of Popular Music Sustainability, Consumption & Global Responsibilities New Media Global Migration Interaction and Social Order Racism and Ethnicity in the UK Sociology of Nature, Environment and Risk Work, Economy and Society Social Network Analysis Education and Society Sociology of Fashion Self and Society Gender, Sexuality and Culture Credits 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 As part of the 120 credits in your second year – instead of one of your optional Sociology course units you can choose to take up to 20 credits of courses that are not part of your second year options. This means that you can choose things such as a Language through the LEAP scheme (Language Experience for All Programmes). This scheme is designed to let students on any programme study courses that cross disciplines and study subjects from departments across the University.
