facts, in order to solve the social and economic
problems. Its right time to develop and motivate the
research scholars in the social sciences to have
quality researches with a lot of skills and research
knowledge.
Objectives of the course
About Periyar University: The Periyar
University, names after the social reformer E. V.
Ramasamy, is located about 7 kilometers north of
the Salem, Bangalore National Highway, Tamil
Nadu, with beautiful landscape and serene
atmosphere. The University has been functioning
as the pool of knowledge by executing researchers
at national and international level. The University
remains as the beacon for higher education catering
to rural students.
Department of Sociology: With an aim to study
and curb the menace of the social evils, the
Department of Sociology was established in the
fag-end of the year 2008. The department offers
master’s programme, M. Phil programme and
Research programme in the same discipline.
Besides, it also offers a certificate course in NGO
Management for social development. As part of the
outreach programme the department has adopted
Sangeethapatty, a nearby village for its
multidimensional development.

scientific study.
2. To understand value of different methods and
materials used in exploration of social
sciences.
3. To create a platform for young research
scholars to learn and discuss about new and
advanced techniques in social science research.
4. To provide data collection and analysis
techniques to the Ph. D scholars in social
science research.
5. To resolve the issues and difficulties faced by
Ph. D research scholars through right direction
and try to make a good environment to pursue
the study by using modern techniques and
advancements in the field of social research.
6. To provide the guidelines and technical
knowledge to undertake the research process of
literature review, sampling procedure, data
collection techniques, data processing and
analysis and finalization of the thesis.
Coverage of the course
Research Methodology Course: Research has
become an unavoidable part of human life –
academics, industry, medicine, etc - used in all areas
such as Sociology, Economics, and Physical
Science. Different research deals with social
phenomena and physical phenomena. Social
research has a crucial role to play in guiding social
and economic planning and development of a
country. Adequate social and economic planning
depends for its success on a systematic knowledge
of the social resource and liabilities, of the people
and their culture, their similarities and differences of
organizations and operative controls of their needs,
hopes and problems, etc. Research must be based on

Participants Selection and Registration: The
scholars who are pursing Ph. D. in Social Sciences
(Sociology, Commerce, Economics/Future Studies,
Education, Psychology, History, Anthropology,
Political Science, Social Work, Management,
Population Studies/Demographics, Philosophy,
Home Science and Criminology) are eligible to
apply. The fresh Ph. D. Scholars will be given first
preference.. The preference will be given to SC,
ST, OBC, Minorities and Women. Only 30 limited
seats available for the course. The Selected
scholars will be intimated by both post and E-mail.
No Registration Fee will be collected from the
participants. The selected scholars will be
provided the boarding and lodging for which
the payment will be done by the organiser.
