Becoming a Good Neighbor
As our new student neighbors move in
around us, we need to be mindful of what it means
to be a good neighbor. As the ones on the block
who have been here the longest, we can either extend our hand in friendship and make new friends,
or we can shut our windows and stay inside not realizing all the potential we have around us. And
they will never know what treasures are inside our
large buildings. It’s the people who make a
neighborhood a living community, rather than a
group of buildings.
How do we start? Introduce yourself, say
hello, offer a welcome. Find out who they are,
where they are from, what they like to do. We can
start a community good neighbor program. Have
regular meetings where we talk to one another and
keep communication open. We can pool our resources and try to help them. Some of these kids
have moved away from home for the first time and
the transition will be hard at times. Sew on a button, bake cookies during finals week, give support
to lonely freshman. Remember when your kids
went away the first time? They were excited, but
they were also scared,
nervous and clueless.
If we help one
another, value each
other without condition,
show interest and
genuine care for each
other, the diamonds in
the rough will become
jewels!
Community Garage Sale
It’s been several years since we held a community garage sale. The good news is that our Red
Hat ladies have one planned for Friday, September
5th, from 12:00 - 4:00 pm in the recreation room.
All of the donations have been collected, but now
they could use some help. They are planning the
On Saturday, December 27th, 2014, in our dining
room. The money raised from the garage sale will
go towards the expenses of the party. This will be
the first of several fund raisers between now and the
end of the year.
To make the sale a success, they need people to help the day of the sale. There are short term
and longer term jobs to choose from. The lists to
sign up are at the front desk. Can you help?
Be sure to come
and find that one of a
kind item at the sale on
the 5th! See you then!

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
It was 1968, the nation was in turmoil

outcast and forgotten. Johnny Cash understood
the guilt, pain, and sorrow of losing control of
one’s life. Come see the making of one of the
greatest live albums.

The theatre piece presents Einstein’s humanity,
his commitment to friendship, peace and education, and his grand sense of wonder and playfulness. Friday, Sept. 12th, 2:30 pm ASP

Fall Foliage Tour and Georgetown Shopping
Colorado in the fall is something everyone
has to experience at least once! The Aspens turn a brilliant gold and shimmer in
the cool breeze. For our trip this year, we
are heading to Georgetown, Colorado, established back in 1864. It was first known
for its large quartz ledge called “the Belmont Lode”.
It drew miners from far and wide and during its heyday, 5,000 miners made the trip up and down Floyd
Hill in pursuit of silver. Georgetown was known as
“The Silver Queen of the Rockies!” We will head up
to the mountain town for lunch at the Happy Cooker,
and you will also have time to do a little shopping at
some of its many shops including, Mountain Miniatures, Rock Shop, Georgetown Candy, Co., Dragonfly Glassworks, and several antique stores. After
lunch, if you don’t want to shop, tour Louis Dupuy’s
legendary Hotel DeParis. At one time, this was a first
class French restaurant as well as a showroom for
traveling salesman and a luxurious hotel during the
Gilded Age. We will then travel over Guanella Pass

home. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate
wheelchairs and the bus does not have a lift. Lunch
will be on your own. Date: Thurs. Oct. 2nd

Policies & Procedures Updates
Pet Policy:
When living in a community, individual actions can have an impact on the lives of other people. Golden West adopted a pet policy to help minimize any issues that might arise by allowing people to live here with their pets. To help ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents and pets, all
pets must have up to date rabies vaccinations, be free of contagious diseases and must be on a short
leash. The owner must have a firm grip on the leash at all times when outside their own apartment
with the pet. Owners are responsible for cleaning up any and all pet waste promptly and disposing of it
properly. Violations of the pet policy are considered violations of the occupancy agreement and continued
violations will result in a termination of the agreement.
Towers Out of Building Meal Credits: With the change in the meal plans available, we have adjusted our
meal credit policy. Full Month Meal Plan- If you have chosen the full month meal plan and are out of the
building in the hospital or nursing home for more than seven consecutive days, a daily credit will be issued
until you are able to return to Golden West. The daily credit will be based on the daily cost of the full meal
plan, but will not exceed the total amount of that month’s unused meals. There will be no credits issued for
vacations or to residents choosing the 20 or 10 meal plans.
Current meal program:
The meals that are part of the monthly meal program include a beverage, soup or salad, entrée and dessert.
You must use all parts of the meal at the same time. You cannot have your soup or salad at lunch time and
come back for the entrée at dinner. First, we have no way to track who has already had their soup or salad
and more importantly it doubles our staffing costs when we are serving the same person at two different
meals a day, at no extra charge. If the full meal is too much for you to eat at one sitting, you may ask the wait
staff to box up your leftovers or you are welcome to bring a container and box it up yourself.
For questions regarding G.W. policies and procedures, contact Donna Ruske at #1880.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
My name is Donald Theodore Jefferson. I was born on May 18, 1937, to
Theodore Jefferson and Elsie Raines, who were married in 1934. I grew up
near Chicago in Libertyville, IL. My sister Diane was born in 1940. She still lives
in Skokie, IL, where I also lived for many years. I worked with my father in publishing a small trade magazine. I have always loved music and was a singer
and pianist. I was involved in local theater and fitness activities.
From 1970 to 1985, I was a rancher, living in a large home of seventeen rooms on 25 acres. I then
moved to a smaller home on fifteen acres until 1990. On March 8, 1990, I had a stroke. I can still
play piano with my left hand.
From 1992 to 2003 I lived with good friends Kent and Claire Herman in Illinois. In 2003 we all moved
to Colorado. In 2014, I moved to Golden West; my friends live in nearby Berthoud, CO.
My name is Amy Laurent. I am a new resident of Golden West. I was excited to discover that
Golden West is located right next to the University of Colorado where my daughter Lauren went to
college some years ago.
I was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1943. As a young girl, I spent a lot of time in Manhattan, where my
father had good friends.
I have also lived in Santa Fe, NM and in Carmel and Newport Beach, CA.
I studied at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where I received both a BA degree in English and a MFA degree in Photography and Design.
I was an exhibiting photographer for over twenty-five years. And also a professor at
Chatham College in Pittsburgh, where I taught photography and design. Additionally, I
was a published feature writer and art critic.
My daughter Lauren, son- in-law Seth, and my very handsome and ultra-smart eightyear-old grandson, Matthew, live close by in Englewood, Colorado.
