Teens who are in Grades 9-12
are invited to meet over pizza for
an opportunity to form an actionoriented youth group within the
Pictou County Deanery. Plans
will be discussed as to how this
can go forward and we are
looking forward to input from
you. Please join us Monday,
October 20 at 6pm in All Saints
Pastoral Centre Meeting Room
and bring your friends!
by June 2015. Upcoming tasks
include fact finding to get an
accurate picture of our present
status; arranging a public
meeting to present these facts
and seek input from parishioners;
drafting a proposal for the future
and presenting it at a public
meeting for further comment;
and finally writing a proposal for
submission to the Bishop for
action.

Father Gary is inviting
individuals to have some coffee
and a time of prayer reflecting on
the Sunday Gospel for the week.
This is to be held on Saturday
mornings in the Meeting Room
of the Pastoral Centre beginning
next Saturday October 18 from
9:30am-10:30am. We will be
reading the Gospel passage for
that Sunday and reflecting on it
until it becomes like a mirror in
which we see ourselves, our lives
and our world reflected, and then
responding to God in prayer.

Pictou Deanery Pastoral
Planning Committee
Parish representatives along with
Fr. Colin MacKinnon met with
Bishop Brian Dunn and Fr.
Donald MacGillivray on October
6 to establish the guidelines for
Pastoral Planning in Pictou
County. The committee will be
meeting regularly over the
coming months with the goal of
having a plan for implementation

World Mission Sunday
Every parish across the world
will celebrate World Mission
Sunday next week. It is a global
sign of the Universal Church and
Mission. Your prayers and
donations will help support
churches, hospitals, schools and
vocations in countries where the
Church is beginning, where it is
new. Please be as generous as
possible to the collection for the
Propagation of the Faith, for
more than 1,120 dioceses in
Asia, Africa, Latin America, the
Pacific Islands and some of our
Canadian dioceses depend on the
World Mission collection.
Next Sunday
The Shining Lights - An
evening of music, like none
other, is promised at 7pm on Oct.
19 at St. John the Baptist
Church. You will be able to
meet, hear and sing along with a
group called “The Shining
Lights. “ What is so unique
about this group is that the
members have either been
homeless or at the risk of being
homeless. They are coming
from Halifax and there is no
other group like this except in
Montreal. How come they are
coming to New Glasgow? The
Sisters and the Shining Lights
have been invited by St. John the
Baptist Parish. The Parish and
its various ministry groups have
been very supportive of those
who struggle with the injustice
of poverty through the Street
Ministry of the Sisters of St.
Martha. These singers are friends
of this ministry and one of the
Sisters sings with them. Do not
let money keep you away from
this special event!!!! There is no
cost for this concert. However,
if you wish, a donation can be
made to the Street Ministry of
the Sisters of St. Martha.

Knights of Columbus Council
1667 are holding their semiannual Ham and Salad Supper
next Saturday, October 18, at
Christ the King Parish Hall,
Trenton. Cut off date is October
14. Cost $7. Take-out only
between 10:30 and noon.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
As we go through life, loss in its
many forms can cause very
difficult challenges. An
8-week grief support program
is being offered to help people
walk through the grief process
as they encounter a most difficult
and painful yet normal
experience.

Challenge Retreats
There will be two Challenge
Retreat weekends for young
adults between the ages of 15 to
20 held this fall. The 116th
Young Women's Challenge
weekend will be Nov 7,8 & 9
and the 76th Young Men's
Challenge will be the weekend of
Nov. 21, 22 and 23. These
weekends will be taking place at
Camp Breton Dean in Hillside

Questions Catholics ask
Is the Mass a holy sacrifice or
celebration? When I celebrate, I
don’t think of it as a sacrifice,
and vice versa. Ancient religious
sacrifices, however, were both:
part obligatory expense, part
festival. The use of the phrase
the “holy sacrifice of the Mass”
is rooted in this earlier
understanding. Jewish shrine
and temple worship could be a
messy affair. Because the
covenant with God involved
blood, the word sacrifice was not
misused. But when people gather
together, it’s time to party, and
the good news at these events far
outweighed the bad for
participants. Personal and
communal sin was expiated:
We’re back in the black on
God’s books. What better reason
to eat, drink, and be merry?
By the time of Jesus late Judaism
had already begun to steer away
from the idea that ritual sacrifice
was what God wanted.
Obedience and fidelity could be
symbolized by the ritual moment
but should not originate or end
there. The “sacrifice of praise”
was pleasing to God, as were
hearts uplifted and whole lives
rendered to God’s service.
The Roman Catholic Council of
Trent in 1562 took pains both to
affirm that the Eucharist is the
“unbloody” sacrifice of that
same Jesus and to clarify that his
self-offering is not repeated but
“made present” in every
Eucharist. What better reason to
celebrate?
