TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME : SEPTEMBER 16TH 2012

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: SEPTEMBER 16, 2012
When Christ asks, “Who do people say that I am?” the disciples answer by identifying Jesus with the greatest men of
their history: Elijah, John the Baptist, the prophets. But no one dares to call Jesus the Messiah of God…until Peter
pipes up claiming, “You are the Christ.” The change that has happened in Peter as a result of his union with Jesus can
only be the work of God. It – mistakenly – prompts Peter to prevent Christ from undergoing his Passion. However, it is
satanic to impede the Christ from accomplishing the greatest work of God. To follow after Christ in the work of faith,
then, we rebuke all our insufficient reasoning. For if our conviction goes so far as to embrace Christ and his Passion,
who will prove us wrong?

IT’S ALL ABOUT CONTROL …
From toddlerhood to old age, we grow in mastery of our own lives, our bodies, and our destiny. This mastery is hard
won, and we don’t let go of autonomy easily. Much of this self-mastery involves the avoidance of pain or discomfort,
so when we hear things like “take up your cross” and “lose your life,” we tend to resist the message. James says that
faith without works is dead. Ouch! That is really a direst message! One way to look at this, as well as the part about
losing our life to find it, is that faith is a process of more and more openness to God’s direction of our lives. It is very
hard for us to give up control, but perhaps what we are being asked to do is not to become passive and babyish, but to
allow God to direct where our self-mastery will lead and what it will accomplish. We are asked to relinquish the need
to control the results of our efforts; to risk, as Jesus did, the loss of everything we are working to achieve. We are
asked to let God take the lead and to control the results, even though we may never see those results.

Lamb of God
In today’s second reading James compares two kinds of
faith, a dead faith and a faith that is alive and active.
As he makes perfectly clear, if we come across people who
are starving and cold it is simply not enough to wish them
well and go on our way. Mark and Isabel decided to teach
their children that the only way to respond to need is to do
small things consistently. The children were 7, 10 and 13,
so they were old enough to understand when the family sat
down to talk things through. Isabel, said, “We go to Mass
every Sunday, we pray together at home, and we do things
in our parish, but what else can we do to show Jesus how
much we love him?” The younger son suggested, “Do our
chores on time!” “That’s good,” said Mark, “but what can
we do for other people?” “You mean people who are sick
or hungry?” asked their daughter. “Yes,” said Isabel, “or
people who have no job or no home.” After a lot of talking,
the children decided they would save half of their pocket
money and the parents would equal that amount. At the
end of the month they would decide what to do with it.
After searching on the computer for ideas, they decided to
help a shelter for homeless families trying to regain
independence. The whole family went to give their gift to
the director. She thanked them and asked, “Would you like
to meet some of our residents?” It was just after dinner so
children were doing homework while parents chatted about
their job searches. On the way home the younger son said,
“They were really nice people. Can we go on helping
them?” “Yes,” said Isabel. “We’ve only just begun.”
The family became regular volunteers at the shelter. They
continued to donate money every month along with
household and personal items for the families, and gave
their time to do chores and make friends. Be a disciple and
steward, and teach your children this way of life.

DAY OF RECOLLECTION ...
Please join with the parishioners and friends of St.
Monica’s for a ‘Pilgrimage to the Martyrs Shrine’ in
Auriesville, NY.
Auriesville is the site of the Mohawk Indians’ village
of Osserneon. It was here that Fr. Isaac Jorgues, Rene
Goupil, and John LaLande were martyred.
The shrine began in 1885 as a monument to the first
North American saints. The various outdoor shrines
and the unique Coliseum Church remind us that the
blood of the Zealous followers of Christ sanctifies this
hallowed ground.
It is from the blood of the martyrs that came the Lily of
the Mohawks, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, born at
Auriesville in 1656, and to be canonized on October
21, 2012.
A bus will leave Saturday, October 6, 2012 at
7:30am SHARP. Cost is $50.oo per person NON
REFUNDABLE which includes (bus, driver tip, and
donation to the Shrine)
A full day is scheduled beginning with a tour, (please
bring picnic lunch), a visit to the ravine, the rosary
recited at the Fatima Shrine, tour of the Coliseum, and
concludes with Mass celebrated by Msgr. Modugno
and then departure from the shrine at 5:30pm
