IN THE VINEYARD As usual, today’s first and third scripture readings are obviously related, with the second continuing one of Paul’s Letters—these days, the Letter to the Philippians. The vineyard stories from Isaiah and Matthew both talk about evildoers coming to a bad end. In Isaiah, it’s the vineyard itself that produces “wild grapes” instead of the crop the owner dreamed of and worked for. So it will be “trampled” and “overgrown with thorns.” In Matthew, those to whom the owner leased the vineyard destroy the dream. So the owner “will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants” (Matthew 21:41). Yes, if we reject divine love we come to a bad end. And with all this talk of the unfaithful being trampled and thrown out, it’s consoling to hear Paul’s message to the Philippians, who were by no means perfect. “Have no anxiety at all,” Paul said. “Then the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:6, 9). The Church sometimes struggles with how best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible participation on the part of the penitent, it became in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying on of hands was still required in sacramental confession, theologians were saying that even that was too much liturgy. All that was required was confession itself, and the sacramental words Ego te absolvo, or “I absolve you.” In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the priest should wear a stole, that the confession should be in church, and that there be questions about the person’s state in life, occupation, and last confession. This is the first time the Church recommended that the penitent and priest be separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament, substituting the priest’s raised right hand in blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until the sacrament became the subject of very stormy debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a major reform in 1974 that is still only partially received. —Rev. Thank you in advance for your generosity. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Throughout his letters to the various communities of faith, St. Paul offers some excellent advice. In today’s reading from his epistle to the Philippians he urges them to “…have no anxiety at all…the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Of course, we may be familiar with the adage, “easier said than done.” St. Paul is trying to remind us that if we trust in the Lord, if we turn to the Lord regularly, if we view the Lord as our constant companion and supporter, many of the trials we face and many of the burdens we bear will be easier. People who have a consistent and faith-filled prayer life understand both what St. Paul is saying and the truth of what he says. Two important facets of lives of stewardship are prayer and trust. Too often we may become overly self reliant, trying to carry our crosses without the help of the Lord. Develop a prayer life and awareness that Jesus is there to help, every day in every way, and the world can be a much more positive place. Middle States Blessed Sacrament School is currently involved in gaining accreditation through the Middle States Commission. The Middle States process involves a review of our school and promotes a plan to set goals and objectives for the future. This self -study of our school began in the 2013-2014 school year and continues this year. A visiting team from the Middle States Commission will visit Blessed Sacrament in March 2015 to review our plan. The Synod of Bishops is taking place in Rome October 5-19. The theme of the synod is “pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelization.” The Secretariat for the Synod of Bishops said, “Churches, parish communities, institutes of consecrated life, associations and movements are invited to pray during Eucharistic celebrations and other liturgical occasions during the work of the Synod.” It also encourages the faithful, especially families, to include this intention in their personal prayers, and recommended praying the Rosary for the work of the Synod. Earlier this year, Pope Francis also invited Catholics to offer a Prayer of the Holy Family for the Synod: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust.
