Document 322919

October 12, 2014
Twenty-Eighth Sunday
In 1986, he moved to Hoehne Colorado, the town
where his wife’s parents had an extra house on the
farm, and began working for Holy Trinity, Our Lady of
Mount Carmel, and St. Joseph’s Parishes as a musician
and catechist for confirmation.
That job morphed into being the musician and liturgist
for the cluster of 10 churches over the 12 years he
spent in Trinidad. His gifts and education were also
noticed by Charlotte Kilpatrick, who was a musician at
the parish and the Dean of the Arts and Sciences
Department at Trinidad State Junior College.
It was from there (and 5 years after his divorce and
annulment) that Fr. Don received his ultimate call to
enter the seminary. At Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales
Corners, Wisconsin, Fr. Malin received his M. Div.
philosophy and theology.
Father Malin is no stranger to Colorado, having
served previously in the parishes of Grand
Junction, Montrose, Rocky Ford and most recently
in Pagosa Springs at our parish’s namesake
Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., of Leonard
and Diane Malin in 1956. Attended Hollywood
High School, and then moved to Yucca Valley
where he graduated from High School. Fr. Malin
then attended Loyola Marymount University
obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in
Music.
He continued his education at San Jose State
University, receiving a Masters Degree in Music
specializing in Gregorian Chant. During that time,
Fr. Malin wed Janet Miller, finished the degree in
1982, and then moved to Colorado to begin
doctoral studies in Medieval Music at
C. U. Boulder. Though he attended the same Music
school where Bishop Berg received one of his
college degrees, he didn’t know him. He left that
school only a year later “when the money ran out”
and began working for the Church at Our Lady of
Fatima in Lakewood.
Many of our parishioners will remember that when
Fr. Malin was at Saint Mary in Montrose, he began a
band called “The Holy Rollers” and gave a concert
here in 2005 to raise funds for the deanery’s parish’s
pilgrims to World Youth Day.
In May of 2014, while pastor at IHM in Pagosa
Springs, Fr. Don suffered a heart attack and has been
recovering since. Because of this, he has had to change
his diet and lifestyle and “slow way down.” In
September, He was informed that he would be coming
to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Grand
Junction.
We welcome Fr. Don Malin to our parish, and
remember him, all of our priests, Bishop Stephen, and all bishops, and Pope Francis in our
prayers!
Lord Our God, in order to govern your people,
you willed to unite yourself to the ministry of
priests. Grant them the grace of accepting your
holy will so that in their ministry and in their life
they may seek only your glory. We ask this
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and
reigns with you an the Holy Sprit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen

Life isn't fair—and neither is this. Foundation for Cultural
Exchange is hosting a Feast or Famine Solidarity Banquet
on Sunday, October 19th from 11:30-1:30. Where you sit at
this banquet, and what you eat are determined by the luck of
the draw—just as in real life some of us are born into
relative prosperity and others into poverty. This interactive
lunch will help all to reflect on what we have been given, and
get a sense of what families in our Sister City and Sister Parish
in El Espino, El Salvador experience. Tickets are on sale for
$10/person. Those under 5 are free. All ages are welcome and
encouraged to participate in this event… please bring your
whole family! Proceeds from this event support our scholarship
students in El Espino so that they can continue their education.

Twenty-Eighth Sunday
World Mission Sunday
World Mission Sunday, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity
through prayer and sacrifice. In 2014, World Mission Sunday is
celebrated on October 19.
Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions
grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are
opened, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt,
and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the
message of Christ and His Church. Offerings from Catholics in
the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the
year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith
worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive
regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition,
these mission dioceses submit requests to the Congregation for
the Evangelization of Peoples for assistance, among other needs,
for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of Religious
Communities, for communication and transportation needs, and
for the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools.
The world's national directors of the Propagation of the Faith
vote on these requests, matching the funds available with the
greatest needs. These funds are then distributed, in their entirety,
to mission dioceses throughout the world. Please pray for those
who serve in the missions, those who receive assistance and for
the salvation of all people.
