ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA
www.stleofairfax.com
Dear Friends,
October is traditionally a month during
which we celebrate God’s great gift to us of Mary.
Mary, the woman of faith, is both a model of perfect
trust in God and our mother always praying to her
Divine Son on our behalf. As citizens and residents of
the United States we have particular devotion to her
under her title of the “Immaculate Conception”. She,
who was conceived without sin by a singular grace of
All-mighty God in view of the redemptive sacrifice of
Jesus Christ, draws us more deeply into the mystery of
Divine Love.
When we pray the Rosary we unite
ourselves to her who is most
perfectly united to her Son. In
praying the Rosary in her honor we
give honor to God who created her
and redeemed her and who has
given her to us as a mother. When
we pray the Rosary we meditate
upon the saving action of Jesus
Christ and we hear again the words
of Mary – “Do whatever He tells
you.” In addition to praying the Rosary, perhaps we
could pray this month as well the following prayer
given to us by the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops. As individuals, as families, as a
local community, and as a nation, we experience times
of joy, sorrow, illumination, and glory. We unite these
experiences to the Lord in prayer.
Prayer for Our Nation
God our Father in Heaven, you chose
Mary as the fairest of your daughters;
Holy Spirit, you overshadowed Mary at
the Annunciation; God the Son, you
became incarnate in the womb of Mary,
your Mother. In union with Mary, we
adore you, the Most Holy Trinity and
acknowledge that you, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit, hold eternal dominion and
authority over all nations.
Most Holy Trinity, we place the United
States of America into the hands of
Mary Immaculate in order that she may
present our country to you. Through
her we wish to praise and thank you for
the great resources of our land and for
October 12, 2014
the freedom, which has been our
heritage. Through the intercession of
Mary, have mercy on the Catholic
Church in the United States. Grant us
peace. Have mercy on our president and
on all the officers of our government.
Grant us a fruitful economy born of
justice and charity. Raise up and protect
all of our families. Through the
intercession of our Mother, have mercy
on the sick, the poor, the tempted,
sinners—on all who are in need. Above
all, we ask Mary to intercede on our
behalf that you would protect our
conscience rights and religious
freedom, upon which our country was
founded.
Mary, Immaculate Virgin, Our Mother,
Patroness of our land, we honor you
and give ourselves to you. Wrap your
mantel of protection around each of us
and all our fellow citizens. Protect us
from all evil and harm. Pray for us, that
acting always according to your will and
the Will of your Divine Son, we may live
and die pleasing to God.
Amen.
In Christ,
Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a
process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who
have never been baptized and those who were baptized in a
non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult
Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the
final Sacrament of Initiation.
Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the
Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the
Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in
learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic
Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part
of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual
introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions
of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to
learn!
RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm-9:00pm
in the Guadalupe Room, Parish Hall.
