Un Mensaje De Nuestro Pastor,
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR,
FATHER STEVE
PADRE STEVE
(Rev. Monsignor Stephen N. Downes, Pastor)
“My house shall be called a house of prayers for all peoples”
these are the closing words of our First Reading today remind
ing us that all peoples are included in God’s mercy. All peoples,
all nations, all races are called to receive God’s mercy and love. Jesus
himself seems to limit his ministry of love and mercy to the people of
Israel in today’s Gospel. But the woman of Canaan crashes through
every human barrier by her faith in Jesus and her longing for healing for
her daughter. She refuses to accept “No” for an answer. She wins the
heart of Jesus through her witty persistence. He speaks great praise for
her saying: “O Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you
wish.” In the Second Reading St. Paul tells us that we have all disobeyed God, but God has “mercy upon all.” We all come from God and
are going to God. Can we pray together? Live together? Walk together
in God’s mercy and love?

Final work on the new Parish Hall project continues: completing the
requirements of the Fire Dept; the plaza; the walk way between the
new Hall and the Rectory; the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe
and the return of the statues of Holy Mary and St. Joseph that were
in front of the Old Church. Once the City of Palmdale and the Fire
Dept approve the new buildings, we will have the blessing and
opening ceremonies (perhaps on Sunday, August 31st). We ex
pect all work to be completed by the middle of September.
(Rev, Monsignor Stephen N. Downes, Pastor)
Dios. ¿ Podremos nosotros orar juntos? ¿Vivir y caminar juntos en el
amor de Dios?

electricity costs go up (in August of 2007 we paid over $8,000 in electricity costs for St. Mary’s Church and Our Lady of the Desert Mission in
Littlerock – St. Mary’s School paid an extra $1,002). Your faithful and
generous giving at Sunday Mass at this times very important, as well as
fulfilling your pledge to our Capital Campaign, “A
Time to Build”. These are difficult days for everyone with the increased prices of gas and
food. We appreciate and offer many thanks for
your generous and faithful giving to our parish
which shows your love for God and our
Church. Your generosity supports all the worship, educational and service programs of our
parish.

Most couples across the nation who have attended Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i) tell us that they learned about this
program from their weekly bulletin. Many are afraid to ask their pastor or friends for help with their marriages. Others are just hoping time will make things better.
Retrouvaille has helped tens of thousands of couples at all stages of disillusionment or misery in their marriage. This program can help you too. For more information or if you wish

CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME
“Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4)
today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other
Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an
invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a
manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen
People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is
something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the
sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in
their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not
afraid to make.
The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing
the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!”
(Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells
us that God is about to act or announce something
through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus,
God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody
among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an
agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to
do something so that everyone will come to belief, but
God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our
calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act
through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through
our living.

Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive social problem
El Abuso Sexual de Menores – Un Problema Penetrante Social
“Child abuse is a frightening social reality. Numerous studies, while
not in full agreement, estimate that some 40% of girls and 30% of boys
suffer some form of molestation by an adult during their childhood and
adolescence, with the majority of child sexual abuse occurring within
the setting of an extended family. We as the ‘People of God’ are called
to work together to stop all forms of sexual abuse, wherever they occur.” From the pamphlet, “Working Together to Prevent Child Sexual
Abuse: Keeping Ministerial Relationships Healthy & Holy,” published
by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The pamphlet is available in the
parish and online at www.archdiocese.la/protecting/resources
