Welcome to Saint Mary Parish
and please come again!
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Each year, Cardinal O’Malley recognizes certain
individuals for their service to the parishes throughout the
Archdiocese. They are awarded the Cheverus Medal named
for the first Bishop of Boston – the saintly Jean Marie
Lefebvre Cheverus. In years past, the Cardinal has
recognized three St. Mary’s parishioners – Deacon Eduardo
Mora, Charlotte Smith and Tim Buckley who have faithfully
served our parish in great and small ways for many years.
This year Mr. Aloysius Lugira is being recognized for his
work as a former professor in the Boston College Theology
Department and one of the founders of the Uganda Catholic
Community of Boston. We are grateful that the Cardinal
recognizes the work of such people who don’t do it for any
public attention...but for love for the Lord. Professor Lugira
will be receiving his award with others at the Cathedral of
the Holy Cross in Boston next Sunday at 3:00 PM at a
prayer service. Please know that everyone is welcome to
attend this event.
- Father Michael
PARISH PILGRIMMAGE

only Son to be born and die for us. Please pray for the
success of our trip and be assured that the pilgrims will be
praying for you in the Holy Shrines of Israel and Palestine.
SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR TYPHOON VICTIMS

Philippines and Vietnam that have been devastated by the

assist persons directly impacted by this storm as well as the

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge, though, is to
live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple
question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my
place now?
Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put
your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those
who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.
May we fearlessly speak your love to all we meet, Jesus,
teach us to love one another. May we accompany the poor in
their search for God, Jesus, teach us to love one another.
May we pray for the peace that cannot be achieved through
acts of violence and war, Jesus, teach us to love one
another. Amen

30, at St. Michael Parish, 101 Madeira Ave, New Bedford.

SPIRITUAL TEACHING OF DESERT MONKS
No Excuses
The time of temptation is not the time to leave one’s cell,
devising plausible pretexts. Rather, stand there firmly and be
patient. Bravely take all that the demon brings upon you.
Indeed, to flee and to shun such conflicts schools the spirit in
awkwardness, cowardice, and fear.
WALTHAM TROOPS IN WAR ZONES
Do you know a Waltham resident who is currently serving
our country? Janet Lyons, President of the Ladies Auxiliary
to VFW Post 2152, is collecting the names and addresses of
troops who are currently serving in war zones in order to
send them packages. Please contact Janet at 781-894-9243 or
email [email protected].
VOLUNTEERS FOR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Please consider joining us in the After School Program to
help children with their homework. The homework time is
from 3:00-4:15 PM, and you may volunteer one day a week
or more if you’d like. You don’t need teaching experience to
do this volunteer work. The children benefit greatly from
having someone to guide them through getting their homework done. The volunteers benefit not only from serving the
Lord in this way, but also from the sense of community they
form with the other adult volunteers. If you would like to
join us, please contact Susan Brennan at 781-577-2262 or
[email protected].
VOTING SEASON WATERTOWN SAVINGS BANK
The Watertown Saving Bank Customer Choice Awards voting has started once again. We are asking anyone who has a
bank account with WSB to vote for the Saint Mary’s After
School program. Last year we received $1,262 to support
our program. You can vote online or by dropping a paper
ballot in the box at a local branch the next time you stop in
the bank. Ballots can also be picked up at the doors of the
Church. Thanks for your consideration.
PLEASE DONATE FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED
Our St. Vincent de Paul pantry is in need of donations of
NON-PERISHABLE food items, including canned meat,
pasta, cereal, and laundry detergent. Your donation will provide recipients with a bag of these items to supplement the
food vouchers we also provide. Please leave your donations
in the baskets at the back of the church. Many thanks. For I
was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you
gave me drink… (Mt 25:35)

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the
Apostles this week …
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES - CHAPTER 7 PART 7
Stephen’s Discourses (continued).
Conclusion
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your
ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of
the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have
now become. You received the law as transmitted by angels,
but you did not observe it.”
Stephen’s Martyrdom
When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground
their teeth at him. But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked
up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus
standing at the right hand of God, and he said, “Behold, I see
the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right
hand of God.” But they cried out in a loud voice, covered
their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him
out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid
down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As
they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a
loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and
when he said this, he fell asleep.

ATTACKS ON GOD
Surge in kidnappings of Egypt’s Christians
Abductions of Christians near Minya, a city in central Egypt,
have surged in the months following the ouster of President
Mohamed Morsi. Nearly 100 area Christians have been kidnapped since the Arab Spring began, with a spike occurring
in recent months. Egypt’s Christians have tended to support
the ouster of Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood leader – leading
to attacks on dozens of churches and Christian institutions
by Muslim Brotherhood supporters. “Even though some
Muslims would say that the Church shouldn’t have a role in
politics and shouldn’t interfere in such matters because it’s
not our role, the truth is that the state hasn’t carried out its
role, and the Church members are being harmed, and they’re
pushing the Church to take action,” said Coptic Orthodox
Bishop Makarios of Minya, who recently survived an assassination attempt. “In the last three years, police efforts were
negligible,” Bishop Makarios added. “And this actually encouraged amateurs to start their own kidnap ventures.”
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THE CREED
In this Year of Faith we continue to include some questions
and answers about each line of the Creed to remind us what
we mean when we profess our faith. From the Compendium
of the Catechism of the Catholic Church…
• How is the Resurrection the work of the Most Holy
Trinity?
The Resurrection of Christ is a transcendent work of God.
The three Persons act together according to what is proper to
them: the Father manifests his power; the Son “takes again”
the life which he freely offered (John 10:17), reuniting his
soul and his body which the Spirit brings to life and glorifies.
• What is the saving meaning of the Resurrection?
The Resurrection is the climax of the Incarnation. It confirms the divinity of Christ and all the things which he did
and taught. It fulfills all the divine promises made for us.
Furthermore the risen Christ, the conqueror of sin and death,
is the principle of our justification and our Resurrection. It
procures for us now the grace of filial adoption which is a
real share in the life of the only begotten Son. At the end of
time he will raise up our bodies.
