called to lives that reach out to all God’s people through prayer education, service, and hospitality.
PARENT PRE-SACRAMENTAL
RECONCILIATION PREPARATION
PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Parishioners,
Thursday, October 16th beginning at 6pm at Players in
Willoughby we will have our 2nd Theology on Tap.
Young adults 21-39 are invited to gather for a time of
socializing and conversation with Fr. Mark Riley, a priest
of the diocese who served for a number of years on the
diocesan mission team in El Salvador. I think you will find
it to be both an exciting and thought provoking evening.
Saturday, October 18th we will be celebrating the Feast
of St. Luke the Evangelist. We will have Eucharistic
Adoration from 11am-4pm. You will notice at the end of
the pews small pieces of paper on which you can list the
first names of those in your family and among your
friends who are sick and or suffering in any way. During
our time of Eucharistic Adoration, the communities prayer
intentions for the sick will be placed at the foot of the
altar. As you enter for adoration, you will be invited to
take one of the sheets and pray for those listed.
On Saturday evening, beginning at 6:30pm everyone in
the parish is invited to the Night at the Races. For a
$20.00 admission you can participate in 10 horse races,
socializing, appetizers and beverages. It is guaranteed to
be a fun evening.
The next two Monday's October 20th and 27th parents
of our 2nd graders will meet in McBride Hall from
6:30pm-7:30pm. These two sessions will assist parents in
preparing their children for the Sacrament of Penance
which will take place on either Wednesday, Dec 3rd at
7pm or Saturday, Dec 6th at 11am.
The 50+ Club will gather on Sunday, October 26th In
McBride Hall beginning at 4:30pm for the Chili/
Cheesecake cook off. Along with good food, fattening
dessert and great conversation among friends we will also
have the Browns vs. Oakland Raiders game on.
With the leaves changing and the temperature staring to
cool down it’s time to get warmed up and ready for the
St. Luke Pilgrim Run & Michalko Mile on Saturday,
November 15th. We will start and finish at Lakewood
Park. Proceeds from the 5k will go to help the parish PSR
program, as well as support our commitment to
Lakewood Catholic Academy.
We are looking for Business and Family sponsorships.
This year we are adding an exciting incentive! – Your
$100 family sponsorship of the 5K will also get you one
ticket to the October 18th St. Luke Night at the Races!
Your family name will also be on the back of our race
shirt. Questions about sponsorship please email John
Litten at [email protected]

Catholics across the country will be celebrating Priesthood Sunday on October 26, 2014. It is a
day set aside to celebrate the importance of the gift of the priesthood in the life of the Church.
It is a time for us to reflect on the ministry that our priests share with us when we gather at the
Table of the Lord—when we call in our times of need. Consider sharing a personal note or
card of thanks.
Together we pray that many of our young people will be inspired by the ministry and witness
of our priests. May their hearts be open to hearing and responding to God’s call in their lives.
More information can be found at clevelandcatholicpriesthood.com
God bless, Father Dragga, Father Wallace and Father Walsh for giving of themselves for Christ’s people.
Their service to the community called Church inspires us to continue the mission of Christ to a world in need.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK:
Connection to the Communion of Saints:
Anointing with sacred oil is a sign of
blessing by the Holy Spirit of the one who
is sick. Oil of the Sick, which receives a
different blessing from the Chrism oil used
during Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, recalls
the community’s sharing of the Holy Spirit and the sick
person’s connection to the entire Body of Christ and
Communion of Saints.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES—OCTOBER 12, 2014
The king in today’s gospel sent wedding invitations to all his close
friends…people like himself. But the party wasn’t successful until
he opened the doors to everyone...to people not like himself.
The Christian family opens its heart and doors to everyone
because we know that happiness happens through sharing.
“Woe unto you when they speak well of you!”
- Luke, 6. 26
POPE FRANICS: 6.) Find innovative ways
to create dignified jobs for young people.
“We need to be creative with young
people. If they have no opportunities they
will get into drugs” and be more
vulnerable to suicide, he said. “It’s not
enough to give them food,” he said.
“Dignity is given to you when you can
bring food home” from one’s own labor.
7.) Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation
“is one of the biggest challenges we have,” he said. “I think a
question that we’re not asking ourselves is: ‘Isn’t humanity
committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of
nature?”

El Salvador and hear Father Mark Riley

IN PREPARATION FOR THE TWENTYNINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
12 OCTOBER: First Reading: Isaiah 45:1,4-6 -
When today’s passage from the book of Isaiah was
written, the Jewish people had been held in exile
by Babylon for more than 40 years. Cyrus, the king of neighboring
Persia, was preparing to invade Babylon. The prophet sees Cyrus, a
pagan king, as an instrument of God. Through this military victory, God
will free his people and allow them to return home.
$75,925
So close…help get us over the top so we
can purchase our new organ!
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5 - Paul’s first letter to the
Thessalonians is the earliest of all New Testament writings, coming
only about 20 years after the Resurrection of Jesus. Today's
reading gives us the letter’s opening words. In just five verses, we
hear reference to God the Father, the Lord Jesus and the Holy
Spirit, and also to faith, hope and love. It indicates how quickly
these essentials of our faith became part of our Christian tradition.

in Mongolia build their local church, as well as to help their
brothers and sisters throughout the Missions build local churches in
the remotest corners of the world. Through the work of these

and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the Society of the
Propagation of the Faith and our vital work in 1,150 dioceses
throughout the world. Your generosity makes it possible for

STEWARDSHIP
“The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to
come.” Matt 22: 8—COME TO THE TABLE WORTHY
A newspaper columnist expressed his chagrin at friends not
responding to his ‘e-vites’ (e-mail invitations), even after
repeated requests. He speculated that some might have held off
responding in case ‘something better’ came along. Our Gospel
today speaks of a similar situation. Amazing so long ago but
things haven’t changed much. Jesus tells a tale of invited guests
refusing to come to a wedding feast and the expulsion of a guest
who comes inappropriately dressed. This serves as a reminder
to us today that “just showing up” is not enough; we have to
use our gifts and talents to be appropriately attired. The grace of
being invited to the Lord’s table, then as now, does not excuse
us from wearing the appropriate garment – that is “putting on”
Christ. Matthew’s Gospel challenges us to spend our lives
preparing for our wedding feast, the Eucharist. Every Eucharist
tells us that we have a place at the table, and this table prepares
us for another table at the end of time, when all peoples will
gather and the Lord will move among us. We are a community
of many tables – of the Word, of the Eucharist, of the world,
and of the Kingdom of God. Our Gospel reminds us of our
freedom to accept the invitation, reject it, or respond in an
unworthy way. How will we respond? Will we be
appropriately dressed? Will we come to the table worthy?

ST. LUKE BOOK CLUB: Please join us in the rectory on
Thursday, October 23rd at 7:00 PM for a discussion of
the novel, “A Song for Issy Bradley” by Carys Bray.
The story offers a portrait of a Mormon family in crisis
when their Latter Day Saints faith and religious practice
takes priority over their family needs, resulting in a tragedy leaving
them disillusioned and in doubt. Not without its humor, the story
develops the characters of the father, convert-mother and each of their
children and the effect of the unexplainable in each of their lives.
Honest, crisp, and skillfully written by an author who was reared as a
Mormon, the novel touches family issues of doubt, faith, perseverance,
compassion and healthy humor. Check the libraries for copies of “A
Song for Issy Bradley!” Join us on October 23rd! For more information,
call Sister Donna Marie at the parish office
The St. Luke YACHT Club—
(Young Adult Catholics Hanging Together), for young adults ages
21-39, has a busy fall season coming up!
We will be having s’mores and singing around a campfire on the
weekend of Oct. 17th-19th. We have reserved a campsite at Mohican State
Park to enjoy a weekend under the stars. We also plan on taking a
canoe/kayak trip down the Mohican River when we are there. Please
RSVP so that we don’t leave without you!
The Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland (10415 Euclid Ave.) is looking
for volunteers on October 24th and 29th. Volunteers would be interacting
with kids whose siblings are currently getting treatment at area hospitals
and some that are sick themselves, mostly doing crafts and BINGO. They
have asked us to be there at 6pm, and to have no more than 8 people
per day so that it is not too crowded and overwhelming. RSVP by email
or on Facebook!
On November 15th, we will be going to the Akron Civic Center to see
Christian artists Toby Mac & Matt Maher perform. We already had to
buy tickets because they were going fast, but if anyone would like to meet
before or after the concert please let us know!
Please feel free to contact Kevin Robinson at [email protected] or 330741-0743 to join the YACHT Club or for information or questions
regarding these or any other YACHT Club events. You can also join the
YACHT Club on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/

There are masses still available for 2014. If you
would like to have a mass for someone
deceased or for a special intention, please stop
by the rectory to do this. Mass stipends are

are scheduling Mass Intentions for January –December of 2015.
