Bishop Georges Abou Khazen, who heads the apostolic vicariate of Aleppo, Syria, told Fides, news agency of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, that among those kidnapped were young people, including boys and girls. Brigades linked to the Al-Nusra front, a branch of alQaida operating in Syria, are believed to be behind the abductions, the church agencies said. A statement from the Latin Patriarchate said there had been no contact with the priest or his captors and that Franciscan nuns who were in a convent in the village took refuge in neighboring homes. Father Jallouf was one of two priests living in the village of 700 Catholic families. Franciscan priests have been present in the village and the surrounding valley of Orontes for more than a century, the Latin Patriarchate said. (CNS) -- Father Benedict J. Groeschel, who was a founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a leading pro-life figure and popular author, retreat master and preacher, died Oct. 3 at St. Joseph's Home for the elderly in Totowa after a long illness. He was 81. "We are deeply saddened by the death of Father Benedict. He was an example to us all," said Father John Paul Ouellette, who is also a Franciscan friar and the order's community servant. "His fidelity and service to the church and commitment to our Franciscan way of life will have a tremendous impact for generations to come," he said in a statement released Oct. 4 by the order's community office in the Bronx, New York. LIFE TEEN & EDGE Here's a quick look at what we've got going on this week: Our Sunday nights begin over at Nativity at 6:30pm for Life Teen Mass. We're always looking for help at Mass, whether it be readers, collectors, gift bearers, etc. If you'd like to help out, come find us before Mass starts and let us know! We're usually in the back passing out song sheets :) Directly after Mass, we head over to the upper room for our Life Teen Meetings, which run til 9:00pm. All high schoolers are welcome to come. And on Mondays, we have our Edge program for all 7th & 8th graders. These meetings are from 7-8:30PM over here in the gym! Every Wednesday and Thursday we have Antioch Hours from 2-5PM at the Antioch Room (26 Thorn Ave.). Be sure to stop by the flashing open sign and hang out after school. I am one of many priests of the Diocese of Buffalo who have had the experience of attending a retreat given by Fr. Benedict. As a preacher he was remarkable. As a confessor, daunting. He was intense in his opinions, his love for Christ and his love for the poor. Our Fall Retreat is set for the weekend of October 24 -26. If you haven’t been on a retreat with us yet, I highly recommend you come along. It’s a great way to get away for a weekend with no school, no parents, lots of food, and some pretty awesome people too. All high schoolers are invited to join us. You’ll be able to grab a permission form at our Life Nights and our website antiochyouth.org. He really was one of a kind. He made several visits to Buffalo. He was beloved at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy. There seemed to be a kinship and an agreement in a similar mission. He also had tremendous charisma. He would probably deny that and argue with you. But I remember a few years after ordination thinking I might like to join his new community — The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Obviously, I never did. WE WELCOME YOU TO JOIN US! Have you been attending St. Bernadette’s but just haven’t gotten around to joining? Our next Welcome Night will be this Thursday, October 16th at 7:30PM in the Msgr. Nugent Conference Room. Joining is simple and we guarantee you will enjoy this warm and friendly informative evening. For more information or to attend, please call the rectory office at 649-3090. He made the ancient stories of the Church come alive and his many books and recordings are a tremendous insight into life in our Catholic Church. His straightforward no-nonsense presentation made even the hardest heart listen. Many of his books and presentations are still available through his community’s website. Offices Closed Monday, October 13th May He Rest In Peace. Thanks for all who helped with Comedy Night and for the many ways you help support our Church! 3 ST. Why in the world would they refuse to accept an invitation to sumptuous banquet? Jesus uses the refusal of the king’s invitation as a metaphor for our response to God. We are invited to God’s abundant feast to share a special, loving relationship with him. But often we refuse to accept God’s invitation to share in his feast and the eternal life he promises. Our times of refusal weaken our relationship with god and one another. Let’s instead accept God’s invitation and respond to it with love for one another. We do this when we donate time, energy and resources to others in need...when we attend Mass or worship services and celebrate together...when we share our values and spirituality. Peace Pole Prayer Service. The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph invite you to attend on Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30PM at Immaculate Conception Convent, 5229 South Park Ave., Hamburg. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Reflection: St. Basil the Great writes of the Holy Spirit and his power in our lives: “To each who receive the Spirit, it is as if he alone received Him; yet the grace the Spirit pours out is quite sufficient for the whole of mankind.” How’s that for super power? In other words, we have no excuse to slough off or leave our duty to someone else—including those we may think are more able, skilled, or talented! Ministering Through Music with Fr. The eyelids and palms of hands are sensitive to touch. Let Us Pray: Thank you, Father, for the gift of your Holy Spirit. How often we forget in our day-to-day living that we are members of your Mystical Body and have the power to bring Christ to the world and the world to Christ. Sometimes we may feel tongue-tied when it comes to witnessing our faith and beliefs to others. But you promised to be with us always, and so we pray that you will send your Holy Spirit to guide us in all that we do in Jesus’ name. Help us always to remember that every person is sacred because each is made in your own image and likeness. Amen.
