For the last 43 years, IASB in cooperation with the Chicago Board of Education has provided
an opportunity for educators to visit a Chicago school through the Chicago Schools Tour at
the Joint Annual Conference.
We are offering five tours covering a variety of neighborhood schools that Make The Connection between education,
community and student success. Join in interesting, informative and educational moments with informal interactions as you
tour a school’s unique learning environment, meet teachers and students, and experience the inspiring learning taking place
in the classrooms.
Blair Early Childhood Center – a Pre K-1 early childhood school serving children 3 – 6 in a blended program with state
of the art technology; Manuel Perez Elementary School – a K-8 school focused on Fine and Performing Arts; Back of
the Yards College Preparatory High School - NEW Wall-to-Wall International Baccalaureate school; Christian Fenger
Academy High School – a turnaround school aimed at providing individualized supports necessary to help students achieve
their best; Sarah E Goode STEM Academy High School – a high school concentrating on Science, Technology, Engineering

The tour officially begins with a buffet breakfast at 8:00 a.m. in the
Crystal A Ballroom (note new location). The Crystal Ballrooms
are located at street level in the West Tower. Tour buses will depart
immediately after the breakfast at 8:45 a.m. from the hotel lobby.
All tour participants must be paid annual
conference registrants or guests of paid
annual conference registrants.

Want to see first-hand how the arts can influence student
learning? Serving as a model for innovative learning,
Manuel Perez Elementary has developed unique, cutting
edge programs creating a multi-cultural learning experience
through the use of arts, music and language. Perez is a Level
1 Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster School that
enhances traditional curriculum through the integration of
the arts and a global education cultural exchange program.
Perez focuses on combining a rigorous academic program
with high quality extracurricular options for students
and their families. Within walking distance of numerous
cultural institutions and the Illinois Medical District,
Perez enjoys several community partnerships that span a
wide range of disciplines related to the arts, language and
culture, and STEM.
Located in the Pilsen neighborhood, 42% of the student
body at Manuel Perez Elementary is enrolled in the
Transitional Bilingual Education Program (Spanish).

Want to experience how a high quality early childhood
program can include students with multiple disabilities?
Capitalizing on specialized teacher training, this blended
early childhood education center provides a dynamic
learning environment for a range of diverse students. Blair
students receive individualized support and education that
is designed to challenge students academically and support
families and the larger school community. High-quality
educational programming is provided for students with
health impairments, autism, severe/profound cognitive
impairments, and developmental delays. The integration of
activities such as judo, yoga and Snoezelen (multi-sensory
therapy), in addition to traditional programming, fulfill
Blair’s mission of maximizing students full abilities. Blair has
a vital and active parent support group.

Want to walk the halls, visit the classrooms and meet the
inspirational school leader of the 2014 nationally acclaimed
docu-series Chicagoland? Here is your chance — visit
Christian Fenger Academy High School. Fenger embodies
the definition of a successful turnaround school that has seen
its graduation rate increase 64%, attendance rise by 10%, and
become one of the city’s top schools for growth in college
enrollment since 2009. Boasting more than 35 extracurricular
activities, Fenger Academy has significantly lowered dropout
rates and instances of misconduct with community-based
programs that challenge students to become leaders within
Fenger and beyond.

Want to visit a new state-of-the-art high school that integrates
international-mindedness and global perspectives? Innovative
curriculum and modern design are showcased throughout the
new Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School. Back of
the Yards offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum
wall-to-wall, creating the opportunity for every student to access
to IB through a flexible framework that promotes intercultural
respect and understanding, and inspires students to enrich their
learning by providing service to the greater world outside of the
school walls. The school has a community campus that includes
a public library within the school. Defined as a “community
anchor” by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Back of the Yards College
Preparatory High School offers special collections and digital
learning amenities available to residents in the community.
The state-of-the-art three-story school features space for 1,200
students and boasts five computer labs, six science labs, superior
arts and sports facilities, a gymnasium, and a six-lane pool.

Want to immerse yourself in total STEM learning? Opening its
doors for the 2012-2013 school year, Sarah E. Goode STEM
Academy quickly emerged as a leader of Early College STEM
[Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics] Schools.
The Early College STEM initiative connects high school,
college, and career opportunities through partnerships
and is part of the City of Chicago’s mission to triple the
number of Chicago students earning STEM credentials by
2018. Students or “innovators” as they are called at Goode,
go beyond Chicago Public School high school graduation
requirements by having the opportunity to earn an Associate’s
degree and industry certifications. Enjoying partnerships
with IBM, Northwestern University, and Richard Daley
College, to name a few, Goode prepares students to fulfill the
increasing number of jobs that require a STEM background.

Tickets
Tour ribbons will serve as your event ticket. Tour ribbons
for registration received by 4 p.m., October 24 will be mailed
to the district superintendent/contact on November 7. Tour
ribbons for registration received after October 24 may be
picked up at 8:00 a.m. Friday, November 21 at the registration
counter in front of the Crystal A Ballroom, West Tower, Hyatt
Regency Chicago.

Refunds
November 14 is the deadline for cancellation refunds. Refunds
can be honored only if made by mail postmarked no later than
November 14; or if received by way of fax to (217) 528-2831 or
e-mail to [email protected] by 4:30 p.m. on November 14. All
refunds will be processed after the conference.
Cost of the tour is $95.00 per person. All tour participants
must be paid annual conference registrants or guests of
paid annual conference registrants. Reservations will
be accepted in the order received by mail or online at
www.iasb.com/jac14 only and must include the reservation
form with check, purchase order or credit card information
covering registration fees. Telephone reservations will not be
accepted. Reservations will be confirmed to the district office
by e-mail to the superintendent or district contact.
