Local Lady Awarded for Helping Community
Last Wednesday Member for Dubbo, Troy
Grant, hid in the Physiotherapy ward of the
Canowindra Hospital to present local woman
Peggie Beath with a Dubbo Electorate Award.
Family, friends and fellow volunteers also hid
round the corner with Mr. Grant to surprise
Peggie, and surprised she was! Looking dazed
and slightly wary, Peggie was introduced to
Troy Grant who then proceeded to give a
speech and hand her the special award.
“I’ve never had so many nominations for
a single person,” Mr Grant said, “We get so
busy with our day to day lives that it is great
to take a moment to recognise those in our
community who do so much to help those
around them.”
Peggie has been heavily involved in vari-
ous committees within the community for
many years including 42 years with Meals on
Wheels, 27 years of Service to the Red Cross
and 27 years of service to the Canowindra
Branch of the United Hospital Auxiliary. She
is deeply committed to her Church and the
Catholic Ladies Auxiliary and supports the
good work they do in helping those in need.
In her spare time she also serves tea and
coffee to weary travellers at Canowindra’s
Driver Reviver. Peggie is the first person from
Canowindra to be given one of these awards
and the ever humble lady’s response was, “I
really haven’t done anything.” As Mr. Grant
said, “It’s those who do the most in our communities that want the least recognition.”

Have A Date At Kate’s
Kate Jones is a lady who knows what she is
talking about when it comes to food. With a
decade of experience in the food industry
plus four years of operating a successful catering business, Kate also has her own restaurant, Kate Jones At 119 in Orange.
The décor has a chic, sophisticated vibe
which is rare to come by in rural New South
Wales, and the menu doesn’t disappoint
either, with entrees such as tea smoked
salmon,warm citrus potatoes,pancetta and
horseradish crème and desserts with an exotic twist like candied banana and pineapple crumble with Malibu glace( I don’t know
about you, but I can never resist a dessert if
there’s some sort of alcohol in it!)
Just like their food, their coffee tastes superbly and adds great value to your day. But
as we all know the best blend alone does not
make a great coffee. Great coffee is about
the barista who loves coffee as much as you,
whose passion for perfection is exceptional,
whose reputation rests with every grind and
every froth of milk. And of course the friendly
staff who make you feel right at home.
The restaurant is located in Moulder Street
just across from Wade Park, close enough
from the centre to walk. Kate and her team
know that when you come into the café or
taste the food they cater you’ll experience
the “love on the plate” As the old saying
goes, the way to a heart is through the belly!
All Things Quilty - This long weekend saw
Gaskill Street’s windows laced with patchwork quilts, including a very cute little display in Aligned. Our own window had a
beautiful story to go with the decorations…
“Once upon a time there was a girl whose
favourite colour was pink. She giggled a
lot and loved getting dressed up. Her mum
made her two pink patchwork bedspreads
for her bedroom. When all the sewing for
the pattern was finished there were four pattered squares left over so her mum made
a matching tablecloth for her bedside table. The little girl loved her bedspreads and
proudly showed them to her cabbage patch
doll, Ebba Olive and her teddy bears. Ebba
Olive had a wonderful view of the bedroom
from the pram she sat in. The pram had belonged to the little girl’s grandmother and
had been passed down through the family.
For a special occasion the girl’s mum made
her a smocked dress. The dress pattern
came from Smocking and Embroidery, Issue
22, Spring 1991. The little girl loved her new
dress and giggled and giggled. Today, that little girl is 32 years old, married, and a mother
herself to two boys.” To see the story come
to life come and check out the little girl’s
bedroom at the window of the Phoenix Office
before it’s packed away once more!
Get Set For Bush Fire Season - Early indications suggest this summer’s going to be
a scorcher, so it’s wise to be ready when it
comes to bushfires. You can find out how
to make a bushfire survival plan at www.
rfs.nsw.gov.au. It’s quick, simple and could
save your life. Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said it’s important for
people to make preparations, even if they
don’t live close to bushland. “Embers from
bushfires can travel great distances, across
several streets or even up to 20 kilometres
in the worst of weather conditions and when
they land they can start new fires,” he said.
Fines have also increased, with discarding a
lit cigarette making your wallet $660 poorer.
Next Big Thing? Orange local Gemma Chapman is currently entered in the Lander’s music competition entitled “The Next Big Thing”.
Gemma is studying music and education at
Southern Cross University and plays the guitar and trombone. She has been performing
her whole life and recently featured in the
Orange Youth Festival. She would love to win
the competition to get the musical equipment that comes with it so she can complete
her education and teach music in our region
one day. You can vote for Gemma at: www.

wish her luck!

Advancing Australian Agriculture
This October!
Started in 1952, Australian National Field
Days is the oldest agricultural exhibition in
the country, and this year’s ANFD is shaping
up to be the best one yet. Running from 23rd
October to 25th October, the event depends
on an army of volunteers who take the motto
“Advancing Australian Agriculture” to heart.
ANFD is much more than an outdoor sales
event; it is a welcome break for many on the
land which includes recognition of farm innovators, demonstrations of the latest agricultural technology and the opportunity to learn
about rural workplace safety.
Demonstrations of agricultural equipment
will continue to play a vital role at the event
this year which provide an excellent means
of promoting your product to a captive audience. The feature exhibit “Agriculture- the
way it used to be done” will showcase traditional trades with rope making, pole lathe
demonstrations, broom making, blacksmith
skills and butter churning!
The lifestyle area and Style Pavilion will be
overflowing this year and many new exhibitors have come aboard. The fashion parades
will be held twice daily along with the CWA
Cooking Competition in the Style Pavilion.
Artists from all over the Central West are
busy creating masterpieces for the Orange
City Council Art Competition Year of the
Farming Family, which will be held again in
the Bert Whitely Pavilion. All paintings will
be judged in the competition and then will be
available for sale during the field days.
This year’s event has something for everyone and will bring together some of Australiana’s most innovative and committed
agricultural suppliers. Definitely not an event
to be missed!

WORLD SIGHT
DAY 2014
Today is World Sight Day, an annual day of
awareness which focusses global attention
on blindness and vision impairment.
This year, the call to action for World Sight
Day is No More Avoidable Blindness. This
will draw attention to the key interventions
that are crucial for the success of the initiatives target- to reduce avoidable blindness
by 25% by 2019. Optometry Giving Sight was
established in 2003 by the World Council of
Optometry, the Brien Holden Vision Institute
and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness to mobilize support from
the global eye care industry to help eliminate
people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired- currently estimated at more than 600
million worldwide.
Forbes optometrist Phillip Wells has joined
the campaign to raise $1 million for universal
eye heath. Phillip Wells Optometry is taking part in World Sight Day Challenge, run
by the charity Optometry Giving Sight, during October to help give the gift of vision to
those in need.
Now in its 7th year, the World Sight Day
Challenge is the largest annual global fundraising campaign to address avoidable
blindness caused by uncorrected refractive
error, which basically means needing an eye
examination and glasses. Today, Phillip Wells
will make a donation to help more than 600
million people in the world who are blind or
vision impaired because they lack access to
those things we take for granted.
“I have been supporting Optometry Giving
Sight for 38 years,” Mr Wells said. “Preventable blindness is a solvable problem and
we are proud to help give sight to those in
need. We are thrilled to be contributing to
this year’s $1 million goal, which will change
a huge number of lives.”
Just $5 can be enough to help provide an
eye exam and a pair of glasses to someone
living in an undeserved community. Phillip
Wells Optometrist is located at 67 Rankin
Street, Forbes. For more information about
World Sight Day, or to book an eye appointment give them a call on 6852 2914.

Greentrees Gourmet Preserves has been
operating since January, 1994. They started due to the faith the local Visitors Centre
had in their products. The preserves were
originally sampled by guests staying at the
Greentrees Guesthouse, who then suggested
the maker create more preserves to sell at
the Visitors Market. Following some government approvals, production commenced for
the fruit season of 1994.
Since then, the way the preserves are made
hasn’t changed. Everything is created the old
fashioned way, by hand, with fine quality local and regional fruits. Gourmet Greentrees
Preserves now offers 26 varieties of jam, 6
marmalades, 4 jellies, 15 condiments and
10 varieties of bottled fruits including cherries and figs. Plenty of options to spread on
your toast! Greentrees Gourmet Preserves
have an air of nostalgia, taking you back to
Grandma’s time where fruit picked from the
garden and sealed in glass jars. The results
are gorgeous to look at and delicious to eat.
The preserves are available at the Orange
Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday of
each month and at various produce events.
They are also now stocked at our local IGA
on Gaskill Street! Greentrees Gourmet Preserves are a perfect accompaniment to a
breakfast, picnic feast or just a sweet treat
to nibble on a lazy afternoon.
We all have to eat, so why not eat well?
That’s the message this week at Simply
Nile. Manager Frank and Chef Mick are conjuring up delicious seasonal menu choices including Fried John Dory with Cauliflower Pu-
ree, Ricotta Tortellini and Tomato Gremolata
Salad, yum! With the usual cakes and coffees
on offer, you’d be mad to miss out on a lunch
under an umbrella in their beautiful garden.
Café Latte is drawing inspiration from their
new French chef, David Mansart by throwing
a French Theme Night at the end of October.
The date is yet to be announced, but the night
is sure to be filled with sophisticated French
food, fancy dress and some other surprises.
Before the ooh la la begins, why not come
into the café on Summer Street and sample one of their tasty cakes including gluten
free options such as Charlotte Alaska (mint
mousse and chocolate ganache)? They’re
now also open from 6am weekdays for all
you early birds craving a coffee fix!
Eat Your Greens are a function centre in
Eugowra that specialise in weddings. They
also, however, offer a delicious range of
menu featuring all kinds of foods from sushi to steak. If you’re planning a function for
your work or a birthday lunch, this is the perfect place for you. A sample of one of their
menus include tea and coffee available all
day, morning tea and a lunch or lasagne or
chicken Caesar salad and thai beef salad. All
meals accompanied with missed toss salad,
brown rice and cashew nut salad, chat potatoes and sour cream plus a bread roll. For
your own private party with excellent food
and beautiful scenery, it’s a steal. For more

The Valley Hotel in the centre of the main
street offers The Dek restaurant, presenting
great value for money with a lovely old pub
charm. Sit in inside or in the beer garden and
enjoy the atmosphere and buzz Cowra has to
offer.
The Valley Hotel, located in the centre of
Cowra, offer The Dek restaurant, a beer garden and old pub charm. The history of the
Hotel dates back to 1965, where building
applications were approved to build a hotel/
motel on the site following the demolition of
the Royal Exchange Hotel. In July 1966, Mr
Jock McDiarmid who had been incharge of
the adjacent hotel, took over management
of the “Lachlan Valley Hotel Motel” and the
license was transferred from the Royal Exchange. In 1974, carpets, sound proof acoustice ceilings and two new pool tables were
installed. Since then, the hotel has retained
its old style charm whilst making way for a
modern outdoor area and menu.
Meanwhile Thee Country Gardens Motor
Inn has the quietest rooms in Cowra. Located on the western edge of town (only 2km
from the town centre) on the Mid Western
Highway, the classic colonial style motel sits
in a peaceful rural setting. Being so close to
town the motel is within a few minutes easy
drive to all attractions.
The 18 spacious modern luxury suites can
cater for a wide range of accommodation
needs; from singles, doubles, twins, families and the disabled, and we have a limited
number of smoking suits available. All units

Council Backing Sought For “Get
Smart” Face-Lift For Gaskill Street
A drive to upgrade and beautify the appeal of
Canowindra’s main street is among the major issues slated for discussion at a proposed
meeting between the Chamber of Business
and the new Cabonne mayor, Michael Hayes,
later this month.
The chamber has issued an invitation
to Mayor Hayes to attend its meeting on
Wednesday October 15 in what its president
Eddy Wilkinson sees as a bid to strengthen
the group’s relations and broaden its communications with Cabonne Council.
“We’ll be putting up issues like the roads
and potholes and infrastructural problems,
but we’d also like to discuss determined
council budget support for our community vision for the future of Canowindra,” Eddy says.
The impetus for this vision comes from the
chamber’s Main Street Study, undertaken by
a sub-committee which is awaiting a report
by the Sydney architect David Scobie.
“The idea is to come up with a plan which
would protect Gaskill Street’s invaluable herit-
age listing but also make it more attractive
and exciting to visitors,” Eddy Wilkinson says.
One proposal that Eddy has is to get rid of
the outdated and unsightly electricity poles
and wiring that blot the downtown area
and replace them with “smart poles” – slim
street poles with lamps and adjustable arms
which can display a wide range of promotional posters, sails and banners.
“With the cooperation of Essential, the wiring and mains could be put behind the shops
and buildings in Gaskill Street,” says Eddy.
“With a gaslight effect the poles would
maintain the street’s heritage profile but
also provide, say, 20 different glows to
promote the annual Balloon Glow, or create a lantern effect for the 100 Mile Dinner. They’d give Gaskill Street an attractive
impressionist look – brightening its appeal,
especially at night, but not compromising
Canowindra’s growing reputation as an historical movie set.”

The 9th annual Orange Wine Festival, spanning over three weeks and two weekends, will
see wine lovers from all over Australia come
to celebrate the best vintages of the region.
Kicking off on the 17th October, numerous
events will be held including an exciting new
“Wander Wine and Dine” trail. On the Friday
evening of the opening day the Orange Wine
Show Black Tie Dinner will be held at Ross Hill
Winery, where the trophy winners of the Orange Wine Show will be announced amongst
the cool reaches of Mount Canobolas. After
you’ve recovered from the night the Orange
Wine Show Tasting will open on the Saturday
at the Showground Pavilion. This event is one
of the most popular throughout the festival
and is the perfect setting for a weekend excursion. The region’s winemakers will be on hand
to answer all questions wine related. With this
and much more to come, there will be nothing to whine about next weekend! Tickets for
all the events of the 2014 Orange Wine Festival will be on sale from the 20th August 2014
through www.tasteorange.com.au.

INSET: Slogger when he was younger
Long Awaited Family Reunion
After 55 years apart, a lost young man has
finally been re-united with his family.
Len Green, also known as Slogger for his
rounders ability to “slog” the ball further than
anyone else, lived most of his life in various
institutions. He was raised by his grandparents Mary and Jim Green in Moorbel but after
they became too elderly to look after him,
Len was referred to Bloomfield. From there

he was sent to a psychiatric centre in Corrambong which was eventually closed down
due to mistreatment and neglect of the patients. All through this Len struggled to communicate his desire to go back to Canowindra and find his family.
Len was finally rediscovered this year after
his cousins, Ida Harris and Margaret Tobin
nee Brooks, managed to track him down.

Through hours of trawling through cemetery
records and being denied public archives
due to the privacy act, they refused to give
up looking for their long lost relative.
On March 1st this year Slogger turned 80.
The family headed up to the home he now
shares with the Samaritans in Macquarie
Hills and threw him a huge 80th birthday
party, the first birthday party he’s ever had.
“When he was a kid he wore a sheriff’s badge
so he could be the sheriff of Canowindra so
we bought him a hat and a badge to wear”
said Ida. So many years have been lost but
his family don’t want to dwell on the bad
times, but rather to make him happy for the
time he has remaining.
“These days he would have received help
but back then they just threw him in a psychiatric centre” said Margaret. “When we
went up to see him we didn’t know who we
were going to meet. We remember him as a
young man. When we arrived he was sat on
the veranda waiting for us and as soon as we
saw each other we knew who the other was.”
All Len ever wanted to do was come back
to Canowindra, so last month he did just
that. Len enjoyed a catch up family dinner
at the golf club and did a bit of sight-seeing.
“We feel complete. We’ve searched for him,
we’ve found him and at least now we can
give him some good times. We’re making
up for Christmas presents and birthday presents now!” says Ida.
