Suspected NLFT
insurgents abduct 11
construction labourers
Agartala, Oct 11 : Suspected insurgents of banned National
Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) have abducted 11 persons
from Amchurmukh, near Rajivnagar in Mamit district of neighbouring Mizoram, a senior police official said on Saturday.
Uttam Bhaumick SP (Police Control) said 16 people including five from Chakma tribal community were coming towards
Tripura by a jeep which was stopped at gun point at
Amchurmukh and then five tribals were freed and the rest 11
persons were abducted. The incident occurred at about 9 PM
last night and the area is near the Mizoram-Tripura border.
Superintendent of Police of North Tripura district, Abhijit
Saptarshi said he was in touch with his counterpart in Mamit
district so that the ultras could not sneak into the Bangladesh
territory, which is just five km from the spot from where the
workers were abducted. Bhaumick said the kidnapped persons
are construction labourers from Karimganj district of Assam.
PiramalSwasthya crosses 5
million beneficiary
benchmark in Assam
HM Report
Gangtok, Oct 11: PiramalSwasthya, (formally known as
‘Health Management and Research Institute’ -HMRI)the nonprofit organization supported by the Piramal Foundationtoday
announced that they have crossed the 5 million beneficiary
benchmark in Assam, reaching out with healthcare solutions to
the underprivileged within the region in a time frame of three
and half years. This accomplishment comes within 40 months
of starting the operations and is a milestone in the primary
healthcare sector in India.
Piramal Swasthya is a not-for-profit organization working to
make healthcare accessible, affordable and available to all segments of population, especially the most vulnerable. It was
launched in Assam in November, 2010, where they worked in
association with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) of
Assam to set up a call centre for pregnant women. Through this
initiative, their efforts were focused on reducing the Maternity
Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR).
Initially, only the 104 - Health Information Helpline (Sarathi
104 Call Centre) was launched and subsequently more projects
were added to the Piramal Swasthya service lines - such as the
Village Health Outreach Program (Sanjeevani Services),
Mother and Child Tracking System (MCTS) Outgoing call center, Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), World Diabetes
Foundation (Denmark) initiative and an upcoming
Telemedicine Project (NRHM).

Burdwan blast: Persons arrested from
Assam part of JMB module
Guwahati, Oct 11 : The
Assam police on Saturday
claimed that the persons
arrested on Friday from
Barpeta district for suspected involvement in the
October 2 Burdwan blast
were a part of a module
operating
under
the
patronage of Jamatul
Mujahideen Bangladesh
(JMB), allegedly involved
in the blast. An Assam
police spokesman claimed
that preliminary investigations reveal that one of the
arrested person Shaikhul
Islam alias Abdulla is an
important member of the
module operating in
Assam and an associate of
Shakil
Ahmed
alias
Shamin, a JMB activist
who died in the IED blast
in Burdwan of West
Bengal.
Shaikhul had been
trained in Jehad in Simulia
Madrassa of Burdwan and

Militants kidnap 11 people from Mizoram
Agartala/Aizawl, Oct 11
(IANS) : Militants have
kidnapped 11 people from
Mizoram along the interstate border with Tripura,
police said Saturday.
"NLFT
(National
Liberation
Front
of
Tripura) extremists Friday
evening abducted 16 construction workers from
Rajivnagar village along
Tripura-Mizoram border.
Later, the rebels released
five people," a Tripura
police officer said.
He said all the 16 people
- Bengali Muslims and
Chakma tribals - were residents of southern Assam's
Karimganj district.
They went to Rajivnagar
village under Mamit district in Mizoram as construction workers. They
went to Mizoram through
Tripura's Kanchanpur area.
Police suspect that
abductors might have taken
these
people
to
Bangladesh.
"The NLFT rebels might
have taken the hostages to
Bangladesh as the place is
just a few kilometre away
from the India-Bangladesh
border.
"Senior police officials
have asked the Border
Security Force to hold a
flag meeting with the BGB
(Border
Guard
Bangladesh) to rescue the
hostages," the official said.
The security forces of
Tripura and Mizoram have
jointly launched a search
operation to rescue the captives and to nab the militants.
June 14, three Tripura
traders and their driver
were kidnapped by NLFT
guerrillas from the same
area of Mizoram. However,
they were subsequently
freed by the rebels.
After the erection of
fencing and strengthening
the security along the
India-Bangladesh boundary with Tripura, the NLFT
extremists use Mizoram as
corridor for their cross border activities.
The NLFT guerrillas,
with their base in
Bangladesh, have been kidnapping people in Tripura
and Mizoram to collect
ransom.
Mizoram has unfenced
and porous international
border of 404 km with
Myanmar and 318 km with
Bangladesh.
Tripura also shares 856km-long border with
Bangladesh and some parts
of the border areas are still
unfenced.
Tripura shares 109 km
borders with Mizoram and
53 km borders with Assam.
Police crackdown in Goalpara inhuman: Ajmal Third edition of Tata Social Enterprise
Guwahati, Oct 11 : Even
as the state government
launched an enquiry into
the recent protests by flood
victims in Goalpara's
Bolbola area, and the subsequent police crackdown,
All
India
United
Democratic
Front
(AIUDF) president and
Dhubri MP Badruddin
Ajmal accused the Assam
government of being intolerant of democratic agitation.
So far, sixteen people
have been arrested for ransacking vehicles and pelting stones at police personnel on Wednesday when
flood-displaced
people
from the Bolbola area were
protesting against the low
quality of grains and other
government-supplied relief
material.
"The state has failed to
provide decent quality
grains. When the people
took to the streets, the government used force to quell
them. This is inhuman,"
Ajmal said.

Imphal, Oct 11 : The state
cabinet has decided to help
18 World War II veterans of
the state by starting a
monthly pension scheme for
them.
According to official
records, 18 WWII veterans
live in the state but their
number is believed to be
more than 30.
Most of them served in
the Assam Regiment during
the British rule.
A large number of soldiers of both the Japanese
and Allied Forces were
killed and injured in various
air and ground battles across
Manipur, one of the main
sites of WWII.
The twin WWII wars of
Imphal and Kohima are considered as the greatest ever
battles fought involving the
British forces.
Chaired by chief minister
Okram Ibobi Singh, the cabinet on Thursday decided to
pay a monthly pension of Rs
1,200 each to the veterans, a
source in the state government said.
The Mizoram government
pays the same amount to its
war heroes, the source
added. An Imphal-based
research group, the Second
World
War
Imphal
Campaign
Foundation
(SWWICF), has informed
various Japanese WWII
research groups that wreckage sites of two Japanese
fighter planes have been
identified. The foundation
identified the wreckage sites
of a British and two
Japanese fighter aircraft,
which were shot down by
British bomber 'Wellington'
and fell into the Loktak
Lake. The two were christened 'Oscar'.
'Wellington' was also hit
subsequently on June 17,
1944.
"All the three planes fell
into the Loktak. We have
identified the six British
crew members and they
were buried in the Imphal
war
cemetery,"
said
Yumnam Rajeshwor Singh,
founder of SWWICF.
"The Japanese research
teams were happy with our
job in identifying the wreckage sites and they would
give details of all the crew
members of the two ill-fated
planes to us soon," said
Rajeshwor, who is the member of Burma Campaign
Society,
London
and
International Guild of
Battlefield Guides, UK.
