From beliefnet.com
1) Take Advantage of Technology... There are many wonderful rosary CDs, smartphone apps, podcasts and MP3 downloads available, most for little or no cost. Try a few different versions to find one
that works best for you. Then use your commute, workout time or downtime to learn the prayers and
mysteries.
2) Read the Gospels... Pope John Paul II called the rosary “a compendium [synopsis] of the gospels.”
Your rosary prayer and meditation will become more fruitful if you are familiar with the events that
the 20 Mysteries of the Rosary represent. Set a goal to read the gospels for just 10 minutes each day
until you finish all four.
3) Add a Visual Element... Beautiful art can help inspire meditation. Enter the name of one of the 20
Mysteries of the Rosary into an image search engine and find a work of art that appeals to you. Study
and reflect on the image, then pray the rosary. Allow the repeated Hail Marys to bring you to a meditative state and recall the image as you pray.
4) Enlist a Rosary Prayer Partner... Ask a friend, family member or social media contact to join you in
praying the rosary. Encourage each other and share your reflections, struggles and successes. You
might also start or join a rosary prayer group in your parish.
5) Baby Steps... Try to focus on just one decade of the rosary every day, setting a goal to pray each of
the 20 decades in one month. It only takes about 5 minutes to pray one decade. Find a quiet place
and really focus on the mystery. A Scriptural Rosary (available in Catholic bookstores or online) can be
especially helpful as it includes Bible verses for each of the ten Hail Marys.
Final Inspiration... Still not sure about the rosary? Consider this powerful quote by St. Louis de
Montfort: "If you say the Rosary faithfully until death, I do assure you that, in spite of the gravity of
your sins you shall receive a never-fading crown of glory. Even if you are on the brink of damnation,
even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil… sooner or later you will
be converted and will amend your life and will save your soul, if-- and mark well what I say-- if you say
the Holy Rosary devoutly every day until death for the purpose of knowing the truth and obtaining contrition and pardon for your
sins." -St. Louis de Montfort from The Secret of the Rosary
I spent this week in Rockford on my annual priest retreat. The retreat Master was Fr. Michael Gaitley, author of 33 Days to
Morning Glory. October is the month of the Rosary and the Church encourages everyone to try to pray the Rosary daily. If you
don’t know how to pray the rosary or have a hard time with the repetition, I hope these helpful hints help you out.
To Jesus through Mary,
Fr. Parker, Pastor
P.S. I’d like to say a big thank you to the American Heritage Girls
Program at Holy Cross for the donation they made to the parish.
P.P.S. The Parish Offices will be closed this Monday, October 11th in
observance of the Columbus Day holiday.

Have you ever noticed that square piece of cloth which covers the
chalice and the paten when they are not in use during Mass? This
cloth is called a Chalice Veil (chal’iss veil). According to the Church's
prescription, since the Second Vatican Council "the chalice should be
covered with a veil, which can always be white in color". In most
cases the Chalice Veil is usually the same color as the Priest’s Chasuble
and the Deacon’s Dalmatic. The Chalice Veil is used to cover the chalice and paten and keep dust and flying insects from the sacred vessels. Often made of rich material, the chalice veils have not only a
practical purpose, but are also intended to show honor to vessels used
for the Sacrament.

St. Michael Ministry of Compassionate Care
A thought to ponder ~ Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. ~ John 6:63
This week we celebrate the Memorial of St. Teresa of Jesus, on Wednesday, October 15th. She is also known as St. Teresa of Avila. As a
Doctor of the Church, she was filled with Spirit and life! St. Teresa has blessed us with many beautiful and contemplative spiritual insights
into prayer. Prayer is our communication with God...our 'talking time' with God! No doubt, we are all guilty of talking too much! In order
to be a good talker, one must also be a good listener! St. Teresa taught us that when we pour out our hearts to Our Lord, He graciously
allows His grace to flow into our hearts, minds and souls. God always answers our prayers with His "still small voice", but only silence
allows us to hear His voice! "Be still and know that I am God!" (Psalm 46:11).
May St. Teresa of Avila help us to focus our precious gifts of time and attention, more
earnestly and completely, upon Our Lord with this beautiful prayer that was written
by her...
A Prayer to Redeem Lost Time
O my God! Source of all mercy! I acknowledge Your sovereign power.
While recalling the wasted years that are past,
I believe that You, Lord, can in an instant turn this loss to gain.
Miserable as I am, yet I firmly believe that You can do all things.
Please restore to me the time lost, giving me Your grace, both now and in the future,
That I may appear before You in "wedding garments". Amen.
St. Teresa of Jesus, pray for us!
St. Teresa of Avila, guide us as we pray!
St. Teresa, fill us with Spirit and life!
Mark your calendars! Save these dates!
October 16, 2014...The first meeting of the St.
Michael Ministry of Compassionate Care will be held
this Thursday evening, October 16th, at 7:00PM in
Room 203 in the CECC Building. Please note this
change in location due to the renovation of Donovan
Hall. Please come!
November 2, 2014...The All Souls Memorial Candle
Light Service will be on Sunday evening, November
2nd, at 7:00PM in the church. Everyone is welcome
to join us as we remember and pray for our deceased
parishioners, family members and friends who have
died. May they rest in peace!
Holy Cross Enriching Lives Ministry
CONSIDER BEING A ‘SPECIAL REquEST ONLY’ MEMBER
Roughly on average we send out a special request via e-mail or Flocknote
about once every two to three weeks. The ministry is getting all types of
requests for help (e.g., rides to doctors, Mass, etc., help cleaning house or
yard, etc.) from people who really need these services. We’re asking you to
become a ‘Special Request Only’ Member. You’ll not be asked to do any of
the things the ministry does regularly (e.g., card sending, visits, etc.) but only
be asked to receive the ‘special request’ e-mails mentioned above. You need
not respond to any special requests unless you’d like to help on a particular
request. We hope, in time, to have most of the parishioners be ‘Special
Request Only’ members so that our parish can act on all requests for genuine needs. Please follow the directions below and access the ministry’s
home page to become a ‘Special Request Only’ member.
(1) Access: www.holycross-batavia.org/outreach/elm/
(2) Put cursor over ‘Want to Join Ministry’

VOCATIONS CORNER: RELATIONSHIP - IDENTITY - MISSION by Fr. Keith Romke, Vocations Director
WUDF\ÀVFKHU#VEFJOREDOQHW/\QQ%RHUPDQ#JPDLOFRP
RUJRWRZZZJRERRVWHUVKRWFRPVWRUHWRSXUFKDVHRQOLQHZLWKDFUHGLWFDUG
I’d like to propose that, in order to know where we are called, we must first understand who we are, and in
order to understand who we are, we have to know where we come from. So often in life, we assess ourselves
based on what we do, we look at people who have done great things as “somebodies” and those who haven’t
shown much, to be “nobodies.” We may feel like we are of little worth if we struggle in life and don’t
seem to see great results from our efforts. This assessment of what we do thus affects how we view ourselves,
which can, in turn, affect our relationships. God, however, wants us to see things in the exact opposite way!
We begin by looking at our relationships. From the moment of our baptism, we are brought into the relationship of being sons and
daughters of God! We must NEVER lose sight of this fact, because it gives us a profound and extraordinary dignity. This relationship
defines who we are and gives us our Identity! And only when we accept and acknowledge this identity, are we able to receive our mission. Look at Mother Teresa, the things that she did were seemingly small in the eyes of the world, but she did what she did with love as
a response to her identity that stemmed from her relationship with God. Now, I’d say that she had pretty good results! So today, accept
your identity from God, and let that identity reveal your mission.

For Those Entering Delnor Hospital in Geneva - Due to HIPAA laws and new changes at
Delnor/Cadence Hospital, if you are a patient at Delnor Hospital and wish to have the sacrament of Communion brought to you during your stay, you must inform the hospital upon
registering that you are a Catholic and a member of Holy Cross Church in Batavia. In addition, each evening you must let your nurse know that you wish to receive Holy
Communion the following day.
Dear God, remember our brave men and women now serving in our
Armed Forces, both at home and abroad. Send out Your angels to
protect them all. Help them discharge their duties honorably and well.
Please bring them safely home to their families and loved ones and
bring Your peace and mercy to our troubled world. We ask this,
Father, in the name of Jesus, Your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
