Attendance – The First Step Toward Graduation!
An important part of the senior year is attendance. State attendance laws tie
attendance to credits with students losing credit after five absences in a class.
In addition to earning credits required for graduation, seniors can also
qualify for semester exam exemptions based on good attendance. When
scheduling appointments for your child, please make them after school hours
if at all possible. Please discuss the importance of daily attendance with your
child and encourage them to be here on time each day.
When a student is absent from school, a parent should call the attendance
office at 832-592-5433 (senior campus) or 281-465-5012 (9th campus) and
report the absence. When parent contact has not been made with the
attendance office, the student is required to bring a written excuse signed by
the parent. Students will not be allowed in class after an absence without an
admit slip from the attendance office. Also, please remember that when
parents are checking a student out of school during the day, the student must
take care of signing out through the attendance office. For more information
on attendance policies and procedures, please refer to pages 1 and 2 in the
ORHS Student Handbook supplement.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure your child's academic success.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition
for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school
students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Of
the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the
highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (critical reading +
mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the
National Merit Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers
are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a
Commended Student or a Semi Finalist. Students can also choose to
compete in the National Achievement Program for Black students or
the National Hispanic Recognition Program for Hispanic/Latino
students. Oak Ridge High School celebrated this year’s National Merit
Award Recipients. Conner Doyel is a National Merit Semi Finalist. They
are the highest scoring entrants in each state and are eligible to
advance to become a Scholarship Finalist through an application
process. Ishwar Chuckaree, Brice Cooper, Joshua Heard, Jonathon
McClanahan, Natalie Miller, Nicholas Poranski, and Alexander White
are Commended Students. Jorge Marcus Flores, Kaira Chavez and
Gabriel Tatman are National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars.
