October 2014
We are preparing to celebrate Little Lambs Preschool’s 25th year as a ministry of
Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Little Lambs Preschool opened its doors in the Fall of 1989. Pinkie Meyer was our
first director and she had a vision to offer a play based preschool. We are still carrying on that tradition 25 years later! We think that is something to Celebrate!

Blessed Greetings!
It’s a great day to be
Immanuel Lutheran
Church! There is a
place for you
here! We have many opportunities
to grow closer to God and to one
another this month. Coming up in
October, we will learn about Hunger from Bread for the World Sunday, and we will celebrate 25 years
of wonderful learning and love at
Little Lambs Preschool, and on October 26th we will have a joint 10am
service with the whole congregation coming together to celebrate
Reformation Sunday, and our
youth’s Confirmation!
Growing throughout the last year,
I’ve come to learn great ways to
center myself for the busy stressful
days that come. While I hope most
days carry no stress or as little as
possible, life comes at us with little
regard to what we ask for. All we
can do most days is weather the
storms, hold fast, and pray that they
will pass.
Alexander Dumas wrote, “Life is a
storm, my young friend. You will
bask in the sunlight one moment,
be shattered on the rocks the next.
What makes you a man is what
you do when that storm comes.
You must look into that storm and
shout as you did in Rome. Do
your worst, for I will do mine!
Then the fates will know you as
we know you” (Count of Monte
Cristo, 1844).
This is one of my favorite quotes
from the book, and it reminds me
of Matthew 8, verses 2327: ‘Then he got into the boat and
his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on
the lake, so that the waves swept
over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke
him, saying, “Lord, save us!
We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are
you so afraid?” Then he got up
and rebuked the winds and the
waves, and it was completely
calm. The men were amazed and
asked, “What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves
obey him!”’
There are storms around us that
we cannot control, and that roll
over us and make our world seem
darker. But there is always
light. Christ shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot
Care Group for Aging Parents: Caring for an aging parent
is an all-encompassing experience that affects every aspect of
life. It brings changes and challenges that are difficult emotionally
and physically. It's hard to face this alone. Perhaps this is an opportunity to form a small group that centers around support,
prayer, the sharing of tips and tools, and encouragement through
shared experiences. With monthly meetings in person, and weekly
supportive articles sent through Immanuel's enews, this group
could hold one another in prayer throughout the week and learn
from outside experts through DVD's and books.
If you are interested in joining together with others in helping journey down this path together, please contact the church office at
503-981-1036 or email at [email protected]. Let's draw
strength together.

overcome it. The storms that
invade your life, or that
threaten to drown you, cannot
overcome Christ, who dwells
within you and alongside
you. Jesus was sent from God
to be God among us, as one of
us, emptying himself of his
loftiness to take on our humanness, so that we might be
shown his life and light, and
share it with others.
With Christ, we can weather
the storms that come for us. As
Jesus calmed the storms the
disciples were fearful of, and as
Jesus dwells with us during our
stormy lives, let us dwell with
one another, calm our storms,
share our stories, share our
wounds and our hurts, and gain
the strength that comes from
uniting together. There is a
place for you ere! Come, for
all are welcome!

News from Immanuel Lutheran Church Women (ILCW)
Do you know that you have the power to make
someone’s day? Whether it is a word of encouragement, an impromptu hug, an invitation to an event,
a quick text or note that says, “I’m so glad you are
my friend.” It doesn’t take long. You can lift
someone’s spirits in less than a minute.
The Fall Festival will take place on Saturday, November 8th, from 9:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. Please plan
to attend. A delicious lunch is served. Lefse, baked
goods, craft items, and quilts are items for sale.
There are many ways to help, and any amount of
help is appreciated.
previous experience is required. We are doing one
extra week this year (six weeks altogether) because
of the high demand. Come join the fun!
Our next General Meeting will be on Thursday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the church with Faith and
Charity Circle hosting the event. All women are
welcome! If you have never attended, please consider coming.
May God fill your heart with love
and strengthen you each day to do
his work.
Lefse making started on Sept. 22nd and is in full
swing. Volunteers are needed on Mondays to help
peel and cook the potatoes, and on Tuesdays to roll
out and cook the Norwegian potato flat bread. No
Congratulations to Leah Campbell, McKayla
Keelan, Chaz Warrington, and Madison Wheeler
who have received their 3rd grade Bibles. These
Bibles - “Spark Bible” - are a complete Bible with
added illustrations and information designed for
children ages 8-12. The receiving of a Bible is
meant to serve as a step in the child’s faith development, between First Communion and beginning
the Confirmation process at 6th grade.
Sunday Bible Adventure is back in full swing for Pre-K through 5th graders. The fun begins with a group opening in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00.
There were 9 wonderful children present at the first session this school year!
Let’s try to have more present next Sunday. The theme for the first unit is “We
Worship God Because He Is Powerful.” Some announcements and a request:
Oct. 26th: NO Sunday Bible Adventure
Christmas Program Practices will begin Nov. 2nd (with a likely dress rehearsal on Saturday, Dec. 13th) with the program tentatively scheduled for
Dec. 14th.
A request: gift wrap, paper towel and toilet paper tubes are needed for a project. They are needed by Sunday, Oct. 12th. Please give them to Kerri, Lori
or leave them in the Sunday Bible Adventure classroom on the table if you
can’t find one of us.
High School Youth Nights at Immanuel: Sundays at 7pm! For 2 hours,
high schoolers are invited to meet in the church youth room, and begin the
2014-15 youth group! Come and check in with fellow high schoolers in our
area, and their friends, and discuss the Faith Lens blog article for the day
(found here each week: www.elca.org/faithlens/blog). We will plan for service projects regularly, and plan for the big trip in 2015 to Detroit, MI for the
National Youth Gathering! Hope to see you at our first meeting, October
5th! All are welcome!
Confirmation Graduates
Gift:
This October 26th is Reformation
Sunday and Confirmation Sunday
event!
Confirmation graduates will presented with their special bibles,
and if you would like to help fund
these gifts, please donate to the
church with the memo line on the
check or on an envelope,

also give during the week by contacting the church office at 503981-1036.
This year, we have six being confirmed: Mason Brown, Michelle
Arendt, Madison Prater, Samantha Parker, Megan Rygh, and
Autom Hetland.
If you would like to support these
great people, please consider
helping with a $15-$25 donation
to help cover the costs of the bibles. And please come to Confirmation Sunday Celebration
on October 26th, during worship
the combined service at 9:45am.

planned following the service. All
are welcome!

Blessings!
Fall is finally here! We had a great start to our
school year. We currently have 48 students enrolled
in 3 classes.
Our first theme for September was…WEATHER!
We have been learning about Rainbows, Tornados,
and Puddles! We have been enjoying our playground
and doing a lot of painting!
We have just begun our new theme…SPACE! There
is a Rocket Ship in the dramatic play room and we
get to pretend that we are Astronauts!
Also in October we will be celebrating Little Lambs
Preschools 25th Anniversary. This event will take
place on October 12th from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. As a
part of this celebration Pastor will be dedicating the
2014-2015 Staff!
We are very grateful to be able work with Immanuel
Lutheran Church in this ministry
and we look forward to another 25
years of service!
In His Service,
In October we will transition into our Farm unit and
we will be taking our annual field trip to the Bauman
Farms Pumpkin Patch!
Canned Meat Drive for Woodburn’s AWARE Food Bank! Immanuel is collecting canned “meats” all of September and October - chicken, roast beef, tuna, etc. Please place cans in the large box found in the sanctuary entryway or bring into the church office. Questions or concerns please contact Annette in the church office at 503-9811036 or [email protected].
Thank you for your generosity! Immanuel collected 99 jars of peanut butter over the summer - nice job everyone!
Did you know AWARE stands for All Woodburn Area Resources Enlisted? If you are interested in volunteering
or just want to learn more about this great organization please contact Wilbur Kauffman at 503-981-5828 or visit
him at the food bank located at 152 Arthur Street, Woodburn. They are open 9am-noon Monday-Friday.
Greetings all! Bread for the World Sunday will
take place this October 19th during worship, with
a special litany and prayer, and offering envelopes
to do a special, beyond-regular-offering giving toward ending hunger in the US, and around the world. There will
also be a special insert for the bulletin provided by this group. Bread for the World is an organization that helps
provide information about hunger in different areas of the world, and offers different ways we can help. For
more questions about Bread for the World Sunday, or for the organization itself, feel free to look up the website
www.bread.org, and look for your bulletin insert on October 19th.
If this is a ministry that is speaking to you, and would like some help in developing a hunger ministry here at Immanuel, please contact the church office, and we will help with training, resources, and discovering what God is
calling you to do!

Immanuel’s Annual Fall Festival Update:
There are several opportunities to help make the Fall
Festival a success again this year - all are welcome
to volunteer:
Donate homemade crafts. Items that would make
good Christmas gifts sale very well and it’s amazing all the clever things we receive.
Make a pie for the luncheon. We are not allowed
to sell cream pies but other fruit pies are fine. If
you can’t bake a pie a $5.00 donation is appreciated.
Bake any other treats - always a big hit.
In loving memory of Hanna Arendt 19942008: we are excited to announce the first Annual
Immanuel Lutheran Church free community Thanksgiving Dinner. This event will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2014 from 11:00am-6:00pm
in the church fellowship hall. More details to come.
In Christ, Brian Arendt, Coordinator. Please contact
Brian at [email protected] or 503-964-0516.
Volunteer to help set up, clean up, or serve lunch.
For more information please contact Carolyn Donnelly, ILCW president
Lefse making continues! Lefse is a Norwegian potato flat bread holiday treat, which will be
sold at Immanuel's Fall Festival on November 8th.
Since the Lefse seems to sell out so early during the
Fall Festival there will be 6 weeks of Lefse making
instead of 5. Lefse makers will prepare the flat bread
at 9am on Mondays and Tuesdays thru October 28th.
On Mondays volunteers will peel and cook the potatoes. Tuesdays volunteers will roll out and cook the
Lefse. All are welcome to join in the fun - even if
you have never made Lefse before! For more information please contact Inez Berkey at 503-982-5672.
