There is a place for you here! We have many opportunities to grow closer to God and to one another this month. Coming up in October, we will learn about Hunger from Bread for the World Sunday, and we will celebrate 25 years of wonderful learning and love at Little Lambs Preschool, and on October 26th we will have a joint 10am service with the whole congregation coming together to celebrate Reformation Sunday, and our youth’s Confirmation! Growing throughout the last year, I’ve come to learn great ways to center myself for the busy stressful days that come. While I hope most days carry no stress or as little as possible, life comes at us with little regard to what we ask for. All we can do most days is weather the storms, hold fast, and pray that they will pass. Alexander Dumas wrote, “Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you” (Count of Monte Cristo, 1844). This is one of my favorite quotes from the book, and it reminds me of Matthew 8, verses 2327: ‘Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”’ There are storms around us that we cannot control, and that roll over us and make our world seem darker. But there is always light. Christ shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot Care Group for Aging Parents: Caring for an aging parent is an all-encompassing experience that affects every aspect of life. It brings changes and challenges that are difficult emotionally and physically. It's hard to face this alone. Perhaps this is an opportunity to form a small group that centers around support, prayer, the sharing of tips and tools, and encouragement through shared experiences. With monthly meetings in person, and weekly supportive articles sent through Immanuel's enews, this group could hold one another in prayer throughout the week and learn from outside experts through DVD's and books. If you are interested in joining together with others in helping journey down this path together, please contact the church office at 503-981-1036 or email at [email protected]. Let's draw strength together. Page 2 overcome it. The storms that invade your life, or that threaten to drown you, cannot overcome Christ, who dwells within you and alongside you. Jesus was sent from God to be God among us, as one of us, emptying himself of his loftiness to take on our humanness, so that we might be shown his life and light, and share it with others. With Christ, we can weather the storms that come for us. As Jesus calmed the storms the disciples were fearful of, and as Jesus dwells with us during our stormy lives, let us dwell with one another, calm our storms, share our stories, share our wounds and our hurts, and gain the strength that comes from uniting together. There is a place for you ere! Come, for all are welcome! The Messenger Page 3 News from Immanuel Lutheran Church Women (ILCW) Do you know that you have the power to make someone’s day? Whether it is a word of encouragement, an impromptu hug, an invitation to an event, a quick text or note that says, “I’m so glad you are my friend.” It doesn’t take long. No Congratulations to Leah Campbell, McKayla Keelan, Chaz Warrington, and Madison Wheeler who have received their 3rd grade Bibles. These Bibles - “Spark Bible” - are a complete Bible with added illustrations and information designed for children ages 8-12. The receiving of a Bible is meant to serve as a step in the child’s faith development, between First Communion and beginning the Confirmation process at 6th grade. Sunday Bible Adventure is back in full swing for Pre-K through 5th graders. The fun begins with a group opening in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00. There were 9 wonderful children present at the first session this school year! Let’s try to have more present next Sunday. The theme for the first unit is “We Worship God Because He Is Powerful.” Some announcements and a request: Oct. 26th: NO Sunday Bible Adventure Christmas Program Practices will begin Nov. 2nd (with a likely dress rehearsal on Saturday, Dec. 13th) with the program tentatively scheduled for Dec. 14th. Please give them to Kerri, Lori or leave them in the Sunday Bible Adventure classroom on the table if you can’t find one of us. High School Youth Nights at Immanuel: Sundays at 7pm! For 2 hours, high schoolers are invited to meet in the church youth room, and begin the 2014-15 youth group! Come and check in with fellow high schoolers in our area, and their friends, and discuss the Faith Lens blog article for the day (found here each week: www.elca.org/faithlens/blog). We will plan for service projects regularly, and plan for the big trip in 2015 to Detroit, MI for the National Youth Gathering! Hope to see you at our first meeting, October 5th! All are welcome!
