PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the glory of fall in the
Kawarthas.
Vivid blue skies, leaves of vermillion,
ochre and gold, and sparkling waters –
our area is about as close as it gets to
perfection. As the days shorten and the
temperature dips, I am overcome by
some innate and otherwise hidden
impulse to ‗squirrel away‘ food for
winter. Trips to the Lakefield and
Apsley Farmers’ Markets and the last
few pick-ups from Lakefield‘s own
Castanea Collective and we are well on
our way.
Heather Sadler,
Before long we will be facing those bleak
November days, when the colour has
drained from the landscape and cold
winds nip at our ears and noses. It is
then that we begin to look forward in
earnest to Christmas celebrations. Once
again, the Kawarthas is the place to be.
Christmas in the Village and the
Holiday House Tour will be coming to
Lakefield again this year. You‘ll find lots
of fun holiday activities and special offers
from participating stores. The Holiday
House tour will afford you the chance to
see inside some of the stately homes in
“How fortunate we are to live, work and play in this fabulous area
we call the Kawarthas.”
Board President
Roasting corn, chopping peppers and
skinning tomatoes for winter chili fills me
with a huge measure of satisfaction.
Apple sauce, pickled beets and
containers of spaghetti sauce add to my
storehouse of food treasures … and all of
it from local farmers. Throw in a roasted
locally-raised fresh turkey or capon (for
those among you who are so inclined),
some pumpkin pie and a steaming mug
of apple cider and your Thanksgiving
dinner table will be complete. How
fortunate we are to live, work and play
in this fabulous area we call the
Kawarthas.
So, take in the Thanksgiving Harvest
Craft Show in Buckhorn, delight in the
gooey goodness of a cinnamon bun from
the Stoney Lake Market at Crowe‘s
Landing or a cranberry scone at
Standard 28 just south of Apsley. How
about sampling local microbrewery
offerings at the new Canoe and Paddle
Pub by the dam in Lakefield? Be sure to
take advantage of autumn activities
before it is too late.

our area and proceeds go to Lakefield
Youth Unlimited and Community
Care.
November also brings with it one of
the premiere events of the year, the
Kawartha Chamber’s Gala &
Business Awards of Excellence.
Exceptional business leaders from across
our communities are recognized for their
hard work and incredible achievements.
The awards ceremony and Gala will take
place on November 15th at the
Quarry Golf Club. Registration details,
including ticket prices, are available in
the events section of our website.
Whatever it is you do to enjoy autumn in
the Kawarthas, get out there and savour
this all too brief season.
Stay warm,
Heather
NEW RETIREE PLANS FOR
OWNERS & PRINCIPLES
For many people in Canada, retiring
means the end of group health and
dental coverage. While provincial health
plans cover some health care expenses,
many day-to-day and emergency
expenses will now be your own
responsibility.
In January 2014 the Johnston Group
Inc., the administrators of the Chambers
of Commerce Group Insurance Plan,
introduced a Retiree Plan for the
owners and principles of insured firms.
This new plan will allow key employees
to easily transition their group plan
coverage to an individual health and
dental plan that has no termination age.
This comprehensive well priced plan
includes Out-of-Province/Country Medical
Emergency Health Care Benefits for
individuals; even for those with preexisting health conditions. Protection is
provided for you and your dependents
for an unlimited number of trips per year
to a maximum duration of either 90, 120
or 180 days per trip. Insured individuals
who are under age 75 require that their
pre-existing health conditions be stable
for 90 days prior to departure, and for
those who are age 75 and older their pre
-existing health conditions must be
stable for 180 days prior to departure.
There are three plans to choose from, all
of which include generous coverage for
Paramedical Services (Chiropractic,
Physiotherapy, Massage, etc), Semiprivate Hospital, Orthotics, Ambulance,
Nursing Care, Hearing Aids, Medical
Supplies, Equipment and Appliances.
Two plans include Basic and Major
Dental Services and there are two
Prescription Drug options available as
well.
Rates are based on your province of
residence and two age group categories;
individuals who are under age 75 and
those who are over age 75. There are
Single. Couple and Family rates and
premiums are payable monthly.
Making claims is easy as drug cards are
provided to those who choose
prescription coverage. Dental claims can
be electronically submitted and
participants can request to have their
claim reimbursements deposited directly
into their personal bank accounts.
To be eligible for coverage individuals
must have been employed with their
company for the last five years prior to
retirement as an owner, principle or
executive; and must have been insured
on their firm's Chambers of Commerce
Group Insurance Plan or Maximum
Benefit Plan for two years prior to
retirement. Dependent children are
eligible for coverage up to age 21, and
will be extended to age 25 for full-time
students.
There are no medical statements
required as the coverage is guaranteed.
Benefits will begin the 1st of the month
following the date of application. Simply
apply for and purchase the coverage
within 60 days following the date of your
retirement. If you are replacing your
Chambers Group Plan for the Retiree
Plan the transition can take place on the
same day.
If you wish to know more about
the many benefits of the
Chambers of Commerce Group
Insurance Plan, please call Brian,

I am not aware of any other conversion
plan in Canada that compares to this
Retiree Plan. If retirement is something
that you wish to do in the next 5 to 10
years, don't delay, contact me now for a
current brochure and rates. Even if your
firm has a group policy with a market
other than the Chambers of Commerce
Plan I recommend that you investigate
the Retiree Plan at your earliest
opportunity. As my father Victor used to
say, "It's too late to sharpen the swords
when the drums of war have beaten."

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
FALL RESTAURANT HOP
For more photos of the event,
take a look at our album.
Our September Business After Hours was an occasion for Members and
friends to join in a Restaurant Hop of downtown Lakefield. Four stops were
included in the Hop, and all Member restaurants were invited to showcase
a sample of their choice during the networking portion of the evening.
After meeting at the Chamber office, Hoppers visited 1. Cassis Bistro, 2.
Nuttshell Next Door Café, 3. the chocolate rabbit and 4. Canoe & Paddle
pub. Read on to learn more about your fellow members and the fantastic
ideas they have been cooking up.
CASSIS BISTRO
Restaurant Hoppers got cozy in the small, elegant French bistro on Queen
Street. With beautiful décor and friendly staff, our visit at Cassis was a
great stop on the tour. Both Jacqui and Sandy greeted the tour groups and
shared with us the story of their restaurant. They take great pride in
sourcing their ingredients locally, from the chevre to the salad ingredients,
as well as their impressive sourcing of local game. Keep an eye out for
their upcoming Feast of Game - running over the last weekend of October
and the first weekend of November. Chef Daniel will prepare a meal fit for
royalty, complete with venison, duck, rabbit and elk.
4 stops on the Hop in Lakefield
NUTTSHELL NEXT DOOR CAFÉ
Chef Jay Nutt welcomed Hoppers with a sampling of local spirits of Ontario
wines and craft beers. The bright café space was transformed to give an
idea of the Nuttshell at Night set-up. The dinner series is offered each
Friday and Saturday throughout October and showcases the amazing
talents of Chef Jay Nutt and his menu of seasonal offerings. Jay offered
insight in to his experience opening and running the café on Queen Street.
He explained the concept of ―Catering to your area code,‖ which
complements the ―Support local‖ mantra. He tailors his creations to meet
the tastes, interests, and comfort levels of locals, and encourages others to
do the same. He also championed the idea of the Kawarthas as a
destination for every season - not just for cottage time in the summer. We
couldn‘t agree more and one look at our Chamber membership will reveal
a plethora of fantastic businesses and organizations that have so much to
offer - all year long.

THE CHOCOLATE RABBIT
A delicious waft of chocolate greeted the touring Hoppers as we entered the
door of the chocolate rabbit. Lois MacEachern welcomed us with a warm
hello and plates piled high with treats. Lois and her helpers make their
products on site and the shop is filled to the brim with chocolates, teas and
other beverages, and gift items. Our Hoppers were fortunate to try a limited
edition chocolate truffle line which features local goat‘s cheese from Cross
Wind Farm in Keene. Orange cranberry or lemon thyme were just two of a
number of varieties Lois is preparing in her kitchen. Lois gave the tours an
inside look into her operations as a chocolatier and small business owner,
and reminded us that chocolate is the perfect dessert idea - and you‘ll find
no shortage of inspiration at the chocolate rabbit.

CANOE & PADDLE
The Exton & Dobson families hosted the last stop on the Hop in their new
pub - the Canoe & Paddle. Still under construction, Members got a sneak
peak in to the gorgeous bar and restaurant, and there was no mistake of
the influencing theme - the canoe. A beautiful cedar-strip canoe hangs over
the bar and will serve as a wine and glass rack.
The varieties of wood used are a tribute to the canoeing heritage of the
Kawarthas. The bar front features cedar and cherry strips as a homage to
the Lakefield Canoe Company. Chef Martin, of La Mesita, was introduced to
the crowd and he offered samples (both actual and descriptive) of the fare
that will be offered with the pub‘s opening this October. Get ready for
traditional British pub fare with a unique twist, as well as lots of themed
nights - Mexican, quiz and live music events, are a few examples of what is
coming up at the pub!

THANK YOU
A BIG thank you to all of our hosts for welcoming well over 40 Hoppers
and sharing their stories, and their delectable prepared food. The
evening was a testament to the outstanding culinary offerings of this
area.
Although we couldn‘t make it to their physical location, we are very
grateful to The Lantern Restaurant & Grill, Stoney Lake, and Six

networking portion of the evening.
