Tight race for first place in COJHL

This past Tuesday night, the Clarington Eagles scored
a 5-4 overtime win and they are now in first place atop
the COJHL standings. Lakefield moves into a second
place tie with Port Perry. Lakefield travels to Port Perry this Sunday afternoon for another important game.
The game was played at a fast pace with lots of scoring opportunities by both teams. Lakefield’s Zach
Wainman and Clarington’s Max Tjin came up with big
saves when called upon to keep the game close.
Lakefield scored first, the result of a beautiful passing
play at 6:28 of the first period. Eric Oosting carried the
puck over the Eagles blueline, passed the pucking into
the centre of the ice to Travis Brault. Brault spotted
Pat Young coming down the left wing and in behind a
Clarington defender. Young’s shot easily beat Tjin who
was trying to get across his goal crease in an effort to
make the save. For Pat Young it was his ninth goal of the
season. Clarington replied at 11:15 of the first period. The
Fitzsimmons Chiefs couldn’t clear the puck away from
their crease after Wainman had made a big save. Brent
Hollister scored on the rebound for the Eagles with assists
awarded to Braden Gray and Jim Allen.

In the second period, Lakefield would score two consecutive goals for a 3-2 lead. Pat Young’s second goal
of the game on the power play gave Lakefield a 2-1
lead with Riley Campbell and Connor Blair assisting.
The Fitzsimmons Chiefs had moved the puck around
with some good passing by the power play unit and
this lead to their go ahead goal. Then Josh Duggan’s
shot from the point was tipped by Eric Oosting to make
it 3-1 Lakefield. Jesse Gregory drew the other assist.
The goal was Oosting’s eighth goal of the season.
Clarington bounced back and by the end of the period had tied the score at three. Brent Hambly drew the
Eagles to within one goal at 12:30 of the second as he
put a rebound past Wainman. Brent Myers and Ryan
Smith assisted on the goal. Brent Myers tied the score
at 16:55 with an assist to Austin Collins. Myers goal
was the result of an Eagles two on one rush into the
Lakefield end.
The third period saw the teams trade goals that led to
overtime. Lakefield’s Travis Brault notched his ninth at
5:03 as Aaron Vatcher and Eric Oosting assisted on the
play. At 12:28, Clarington tied the score once again.
Brent Myers, with his second goal of the game, beat
Wainman with a shot from the left faceoff circle with
Brad Down assisting. In the overtime period. Lakefield had an early chance to score and end the game,
but it was Clarington on a dump into the Lakefield end
that would be rewarded with the winning goal. Lakefield had a clearing attempt go to Eagles Jared Hollister who passed to Brad Down and Down’s shot beat
Wainman.
Lakefield outshot Clarington 31-28. Chiefs will be in
Keswick this Friday night to play the sixth place Georgina Ice.
Prior to Tuesday night’s game, The Lakefield
Fitzsimmons Chiefs, the Clarington Eagles and attending fans observed Remembrance Day. Members of the
Lakefield Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 77 were in
attendance and led the on ice ceremony. Kaitlyn Adderley sang “O Canada” and “God Save the Queen”.
Fitzsimmons Chiefs executive director Dan Wilson
read “In Flanders Fields” and “ The Act of Remembrance”. World War II veteran Arnold Graham who
was enlisted in the RCAF took part in the ceremonial
puck drop. The Lakefield Fitzsimmons Chiefs would
like to extend their thanks to all who took part in the
Remembrance Day ceremony.
