Blood Drive during the Festival was a huge success!
T
he Friends of Sadie hosted
an Inova Bloodmobile on
September 6, 2014, the
Saturday of the Burke Centre Festival,
and thanks to the community’s
support, it was a huge success!
Between dedicated appointments and
many more walk-ins, Burke Centre
residents donated 50 units of blood.
The accompanying lemonade stand
provided refreshments for many
festival attendees.
If you noticed people walking around the Festival
fine with what appeared to be serious “injuries”,
chances are they had been to the OEM area for
moulage, which is the application of mock injuries
for emergency training purposes. Very realistic!
OCTOBER 2014
Special thanks to Knollwood
Community Church for graciously
providing their conveniently-located parking lot and childcare services. Thank you, also, to the Burke Athletic
Club for donating gold shoelaces to celebrate September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All in all,
nearly $1,200 was collected for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer over the weekend. Thank you for your
generosity!

Hunting for
Virginia History
I
s your child a 4th grade student
learning Virginia history? If so,
sign them up for the “Hunting for
Virginia History” workshop taking place on the November
3rd – the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) teacher
workday. This comprehensive workshop will either aid
or reinforce your child’s history skills while also offering
fun activities from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop
will offer a guided Scavenger Hunt for kids in the historic
Old Town Fairfax area, a trip to the Fairfax Museum
and Visitor Center, fun games throughout the day, and
engaging lessons. This workshop is the solution to any
busy or working parent’s issue of having kids at home on
FCPS teacher workdays, offering a constructive way to fill
your child’s day while also providing childcare.
FOR COMMUNITY SENIORS
(con nued from page 10)
Registrants bring a bag lunch and stay for a full day of classes/activities and socializing, or pick
and choose the classes that interest them the most. The classes run Mondays, September 29 through
November 3, 9:30 AM to 2:45 PM, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Rd., Fairfax; cost
$30. Registration form and class schedule available at www.scfbva.org, or by calling 703-323-4788.
Registration is open throughout the session.
To obtain a flyer and registration form or if there
are any questions, please email Meg Connors at
[email protected]. The workshop is offered to
all 4th graders in the community as a service project, but is
limited to the first 40 students to register. Participants will
need to register and pay a $10 registration fee in advance
to cover the cost of supplies and all children need to bring
a bag lunch containing NO NUTS or nut products! This
workshop is a part of Meg’s Gold Award project. The
Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. It
requires 80+ hours of community service on an individual
leadership project.
