“A thousand people a day are moving into Texas, and Houston is getting the lion’s share. And
Cy-Fair is one of the fastest-growing sections of Houston,” said Keith Vrana, chair of Cy-Fair
Houston Chamber of Commerce’s transportation committee.
“Cost of living in this area isn’t as high as in other areas of Houston, and there are a lot of options

A slew of new commercial development took place in The Vintage in 2013 and this year, including
the opening of the 44,000-square-foot Champions Whole Foods. By 2017, Bridgeland is expected
to attract 2,180 occupants and 671 developments, while Towne Lake is expected to bring 1,709
occupants and 340 developments.
The growing local energy company surge, which includes the Exxon Mobil campus at the
intersection of Interstate 45 and the Hardy Toll Road and opens in 2015, could lead to an energy
corridor that stretches from Katy, through Cy-Fair and into Kingwood, Vrana said.

Chance Meeting Leads to Big Business for Energy Consultant
Paul Brower was a new chamber member when he went to the
ribbon cutting for Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers
on FM 529. There, one of the investors in the new Freddie’s
franchise mentioned that the process of buying electricity in
Houston’s unregulated market was confusing. The man, Clark
Nelson, lives in Wichita, Kansas and isn’t used to working in
the “customer’s choice” energy market that Texas and a few
other states have.

Because of the options deregulation presents, the
Texas energy market can be difficult to navigate.
That leaves Nelson and operators of other
businesses uncertain about how to get the best
rates and causes them to spend an excess amount
of time dealing with it, Brower said.
Brower turned to the man, shook his hand and said, “I can help you with that.” Brower is an
independent energy consultant who works through Entelrgy, helping clients like Smashburger,
Tomball ISD and others understand the market, get permits and interface with CenterPoint Energy
for the infrastructure. He also shops the company’s electrical load to providers to get the best rate.
Brower gave Nelson his card and said he’d contact him later in the day. Then, Brower went back to
listening to company founder Freddy Simon talk about his company’s history and philosophy.
By the end of the night, Brower and Nelson had a signed contract for Brower to research and secure
electric services for 30 Freddie’s restaurants to be built in the Houston area over a 10-year stretch.
“Just that chance meeting resulted in 30 jobs, and that’s a significant amount of revenue,” said
Brower. “That doesn’t happen very often, and it’s never that easy to get a job.”
Brower was able to save the company about 16 percent on its energy rate compared to what it was
paying at the FM 529 location.
For Brower, that meeting was a quick lesson in the value of his chamber membership. “If you
want a good opportunity, and your target is businesses, there’s no better place to network than the
chamber.”

Brothers Drive Consolidated Mills to New Heights
Keith and Scott Vrana were born 18 months apart, the only children in their
house. Growing up, they were extremely close and wanted to run a business
together when they got older.
In 2004, that dream became reality when they bought Consolidated Mills,
a food contract packaging and product-solutions company that serves
institutional and retail food industries. Scott, 46, is the president and Keith,
47, is the executive vice president. But they’re both the face of the company,
and they both run it. When they have a disagreement, “whoever sells the best
that day wins the argument that day,” Keith said.
“Buying it was really exciting for us,” he said. “The company was already on solid footing, and we thought we could grow it by
adding capability, broadening the scope of what it was offering.”
The company, founded in 1962, focused primarily on packaging spices for use in restaurants – for example, taking large bags of
spices and separating them into smaller containers that are more convenient in kitchens. It also blended spices for special recipes
according to restaurants’ specifications.
The brothers expanded its offerings to include flavor concentrates,
food coloring, bakery emulsions, sno-cone syrups, slush concentrates
and bar mixers. They added new equipment, manufacturing rooms
and an industrial kitchen that quadrupled its capacity to
manufacture processed foods such as salsas, barbeque sauces, and
Bloody Mary mixes.
The building on Brittmoore near U.S. 290 is the only packaging
facility locally that does both wet and dry under the same roof,
giving Consolidated Mills an advantage over its competition.
The added capacity brought in added revenue. When the Vranas
bought Consolidated Mills, revenues were about $4.2 million, with about $2.2 of that coming from manufacturing. In 2013, the
company’s revenue was about $8 million, with more than $7 million of that coming from manufacturing.
And now, instead of simply repackaging other company’s products, Consolidated Mills is producing its own line of salsa, barbeque
sauces and bar mixers called Alamo Red. Republic Distributors will begin distributing it to local stores in the next few months.
Raised in Waco, the brothers have embraced Cy-Fair since moving to the area. Being responsible business owners is important,
Keith said.
Keith is active in the chamber, including being chair of the transportation committee. Scott focuses his efforts on education and
CFISD.
“We get just as much satisfaction out of the things we do for the community as anything we accomplish in business,” he said.

Prop 1 will help fight road congestion
Cy-Fair’s growth is bringing concerns about road capacity.
With more than 80,000 miles, Texas has the largest state-maintained highway system in the nation, yet ranks 38th in per-capita
spending on highways.
Prop 1, a November statewide ballot proposition, would amend the state constitution to authorize annual disbursements from the
state’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund – about $1.4 billion in the first year alone – without new
taxes, fees or debt.
Prop 1 wouldn’t solve the problem – the state will need to pour $270 billion into the highway system in the next 25 years to keep
congestion from getting worse – but it would be a start, said Keith Vrana, chair of Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce’s
transportation committee. He also thinks the state needs to increase its disproportionally low gas tax and vehicle-registration fees.
Since the last increase in the gas tax, 1991, the cost of constructing and maintaining the highway system has doubled. But the
amount collected has stayed about the same, according to Texas Infrastructure Now.
“If you don’t pay money, how are you going to fix this?” Vrana asks. “Take a look at the big picture. Texas is a leader in growth and
business. If they don’t address transportation issues, the breaks will be put on that growth.”
Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Earns an “A”
For the third consecutive year, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital has received an “A” Hospital Safety Score from The
Leapfrog Group, an employer-based coalition advocating for improved transparency, quality and safety in hospitals. The A, B, C, D
or F grades are assigned to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals nationwide based on preventable medical errors, injuries and infections.
Only 28 percent of Texas hospitals and 32 percent of hospitals nationwide received an A rating.
The Hospital Safety Score is calculated under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and is designed to give
the public free information they can use when selecting a hospital for care. The panel utilizes 28 publicly available hospital safety
measures compiled from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in order to produce a single score representing a hospital’s
overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
North Cypress Medical Center Joint Replacement Program Awarded Certification
North Cypress Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its Joint Replacement program by
demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific
care. The certification award recognizes North Cypress Medical Center’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint
Commission’s state-of-the- art standards.
North Cypress underwent a rigorous on-site review in February. A Joint Commission expert evaluated the North Cypress Joint
Center for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and
control, leadership and medication management.
The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs
across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national
standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to
performance measurement and improvement activities.

Your Partners at the Chamber
Sara began working for the chamber in March as its Marketing and Events Coordinator. She
grew up in the Cy-Fair community, graduating from Cypress Woods High School in 2009
before attending Oklahoma State University, where she graduated in May 2013 with a strategic
communications degree and minor in apparel merchandising.
At OSU, Sara cheered and served as a member of her sorority’s (Alpha Chi Omega) executive
team. Off the clock, Sara enjoys spending time with her family, high school sweetheart (Josh
Theut) and their new labrador puppy, Ryder.
