Sunday 12th October 2014 We exist as Jesus’ followers to know, love and serve God in our world. Welcome….to Mill Park Baptist Church this morning for our family time together – of worship, celebration, teaching, and friendship. We hope you really enjoy this time, and we’re trusting and praying it’s deeply meaningful for you. If you are visiting or new with us here this morning, you’re extra welcome! You don’t need to do, say, or be anything to fit in! You’re welcome, just as you are! We'd love our visitors to drop by the Welcome Lounge, located in the foyer just outside the main auditorium door. Look out for our Information Desk where you'll find a welcome pack just for you, and someone to answer your questions. If you'd like to let us know you've visited, please fill out a visitors card (inside our welcome pack) and let us know if you'd like to attend an upcoming Newcomers Lunch. Thanks for spending time with us today ! From the Pastor As we said last Sunday, life is full of mystery. We can’t always solve mystery, in fact I don’t know that we’re always meant to solve it. Sometimes, though, with a bit (or a lot) of searching, enquiring, and listening, we can get a handle on it. First thing Monday morning this week I got a start on solving one of my mysteries – a friend from our church family dropped into the office with a DVD for me to watch – Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. When I get to see it, it’ll show me how the Bell Rock Lighthouse was built! We started our Spirit|Life series last Sunday, we’ll continue today and the next couple of Sundays, and our Cultiv8 Groups sliced it up during the week. I heard some feedback, and it made sense to me. Paraphrased, it was said the “God the Father” and “Jesus the Son” are easier concepts for us people to grasp than “the Holy Spirit” (let alone “the Holy Ghost” as he was more often called when I was a boy). Truth be known, there’s a fair bit of mystery in the whole of Christian faith. Not only mystery, but easily some clichés and jargon which mean we can say words and fulfil functions without really understanding what they mean. We’re aiming to work together this month – all of us, in church, as leaders, in Cultiv8 Groups – to try and delve into the mystery. Instead of leaving the Holy Spirit (or the Holy Ghost) as a mystery or a jargoned cliché, we’re hoping to get fresh understanding of who he is, how he operates, and what that means for us today. The Holy Spirit was a full mystery to me for the first couple of decades of my life. I haven’t gotten anywhere near completely uncovering the mystery, but I’ve learned enough along the way to know this is a mystery with awesome potential and truth, with far, far-reaching implications and influences on our lives today. The more we learn of the Spirit, the more we want to learn and live in what we’ve experienced. Today, we’re privileged to have Ps. Matt (“Dubbs”) Withers teaching. Every time Dubbs has something to say, God seems to grab and embody the words. Sit and listen, and just watch what happens! Thanks for joining us on the journey! We’re planning to celebrate with a BYO picnic at Bundoora Park. Put the date in your diary now and plan for a fun time together! ‘Over the course of this year, we’ve let you know on a couple of occasions that we’ve been travelling below budget in our weekly offerings (taken in church and given in many cases by people by internet banking). Since we spoke about ‘Your Money…or Your Life’, we had an awesome month in June (way above budget) and a fairly good month in August (well above), but unfortunately in our other months we’ve stayed below. We’re now sitting around $15,000 under what we’d expected to receive in offerings. This presents us with a critical challenge as we near year’s end, one which our Leadership Group is very mindful of and prayerful about. We’re appealing to everyone in our church family – individuals, groups, families – to step up their prayer on this, calling out to God for him to help us, to provide what we need, and to speak to every one of us about the answers to this dilemma. We’re supremely confident he will!’ AN INVITATION The Diamond Valley Evergreens group have invited our Diamonds (age 55+) to join them on the first Wednesday in November @ their church on Diamond Creek Road for a time of fellowship and sharing something precious and/or important in your life Wednesday 5 November @1.30. Hope you are able to join in. They are going to share and provide afternoon tea. Please let Pauline know if you can join in.
