The Club Chronicles www.BGCiowa.com 319-752-2769 October 2014 Thanks From the Iowa Wife Husband Terrific again are the only words that come to mind when I think of BGC and the 2014 Iowa Wife Husband Championship. What an awesome job everyone does to make this Iowa championship such a success. The Club Chronicles Thank you members for all that you do – players’ assistants, starters, greeters, ball spotters, registrars, scorekeepers, comfort station workers, etc., over 50 members volunteered!. Our guests from around the state continually tell us how impressed they are, and what fantastic members and staff we have. (I already knew this!) This championship is such a success because of the efforts by all of the teams – Joe, Sue, Jason and the pro shop team; Bob, Calvin, Rod and the house team; Keith and the grounds crew team; all the volunteer teams, and to Chelsea and the Greater Burlington Convention and Tourism team. Special kudos to our new leader, Don Schrack for a great job. Also, special recognition to our incredible decorating committee led by Cristy Schmidt for turning our golf club into “BGC Hollywood”, a festive party atmosphere complete with red carpet! The Friday night party was so energetic and so enjoyed by our guests from around the state. Thanks to Sue for making the pro shop BGC Hollywood also, complete with a photo opportunity! Next year we will be hosting our final Iowa Wife-Husband championship here at BGC, Sept 10-13, 2015. Put the dates on your calendar now and lets double the number of BGC members entering. While it will be hard to continually improve on such a successful event, I know you will give it your all. Because of your efforts, our incredible BGC member volunteers, the awesome job by our staff and community support – it will be tough for anyone to match BGC! Thanks for all that you do! You make me proud. In late October we will once again deeptine and sand top dress all of the greens. In November our main focus will be preparing the golf course for the winter season. The irrigation systems and golf course bathrooms will be winterized. All of the golf course accessories such as wastebaskets, ballwashers and bunker rakes will all be brought off the golf course. We will heavily sand top dress all greens in mid to late November as well as apply a dormant fertilizer to the greens and tees. Just a reminder about frost: On cool mornings with clear skies and no winds when the air temperature is less than 40 degrees we may have frost. Frost is dew that is frozen to the leaf blades of the turfgrass. We must stay off of all of the turfgrass areas until the frost is completely melted. If you walk or drive a golf cart on frost covered turfgrass you may do great harm to the turfgrass. The grounds staff will notify the pro shop on mornings when frost is present as well as an approximate time for when we can allow you to begin your round of golf. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Just a reminder to all private golf cart owners, it is just as important to continue to check the water levels in your cart batteries in the fall and winter months as it is during the golfing season. Once a month you must check the water in all of your golf cart batteries.
