On April 25 & May 2, a Ping Pong Tournament was held at the Barbara Lee Senior Center. The tournament categories included Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles and there were 10 entries in each category. Certificates were awarded to the those who place 1st, 2nd & 3rd. place winners. The Senior Center staff would like to acknowledge and thank Lisa Liang for her hard work in organizing and running this tournament! A Senior Center Membership is required to participate in all programs (paid and drop-in), classes, and trips, with the exception of the Lunch Program and Bingo sessions. Membership fee is $12 for Milpitas residents and $30 for non-residents. Membership is good for 1 year from the date you join. Milpitas residents need to show 2 forms of proof showing Milpitas address (a photo ID and a credit card statement, bank statement or utility bill). There is a $5 replacement fee for lost/missing cards. 2 Senior Center Monthly Highlights Oral Health Care Thursday, July 3 1:30 pm This presentation includes information on oral health and its relationship with one’s general health overall. Proper oral hygiene procedures and denture care will be discussed and demonstrated. The importance of prevention of oral disease and the strategies involved (fluoride, mouth rinses, xylitol, diet). The importance of dental check ups and dental cleanings will also be discussed (dental cariies, oral cancer screenings and periodontal evaluations). This presentation will be conducted by senior students of the Dental Hygiene program at Carrington College. Brain Health - Maintain Your Brain Friday, July 11 10:30 am Come learn how to Maintain Your Brain at this workshop. The presenter will discuss the five things you can remember to do for a healthy brain. Presented by J. Harrison, NP-C, CareMore Behavorial Health and CareMore. Kaiser Permanente Enrollment Tuesday, July 15 • 10:00 am-12:00 pm Thursday, August 21 • 10:00 am-12:00 pm A representative from Kaiser Permanente will be at the Senior Center to answer questions you might have regarding its Senior Advantage healthcare coverage program and to assist with the application process. Kaiser Permanente has a 5-Star rating by Medicare so it can accept enrollments throughout the year. Chiropractic Health Friday, July 18 10:30 am Do you have headaches or body pain? A chiropractor may be able to help. Come learn about chiropractic care and how it can help with all sorts of pain, including neck pain, back pain, headaches, pain in the legs and hands, and arthritis. The speaker is Dr. Lee, D.C. from Grace Chiropractic. Eye Diseases & Screening Thursday, July 24 10:00 am Dr. Jay Mehta, from Mission Valley Eye Medical Center, will discuss general eye care tips, the most common eye diseases that affect seniors: cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, aging macular degeneration, eye infections, red eye, and dry or watery eyes. He will also discuss the common treatments for these diseases. After the presentation, he will do screenings to check eyes for obvious eye diseases. Using an opthalomoscope, he can see moderate to significant cataracts, bad optic nerves, and possibly macular degeneration, and then recommend an ophthalmologist for treatment. Tuesday, July 29 11:00 am Sourcewise, previously Council On Aging in Silicon Valley, is celebrating it’s 40th year of service in Santa Clara County. It continues to support seniors and caregivers as it expands its reach to include persons with disabilities and all adults in Santa Clara County. Sourcewise updated its name to better reflect the expanded community it serves. Sourcewise aims to inform, educate, and prepare all adults within Santa Clara County to better navigate their health and life options. Sourcewise collaborates with Santa Clara County, State, and local networks to provide a streamlined approach to service and support systems. It empowers individuals by providing access to information, allowing for personal choices and continued independence. It strives to create a community-based system of care that crosses city boundaries, income levels, geography and special interests. Senior Center Monthly Highlights CareMore’s Senior Citizen Day - Ice Cream & Entertainment Friday, August 15 • 1:00 pm CareMore is sponsoring a free “Senior Citizen Day” in August at our Senior Center. After our lunch program you can stay for entertainment and ice cream - what a perfect way to finish up the week! Flyers with more information will be in the Senior Center soon. Summer BBQ Lunch Friday, August 22 12:00-1:00 pm • $4 per person We’re celebrating the summer with another BBQ Lunch on the Patio! Buy your ticket in advance at the Senior Center Front Desk, starting July 28. The menu is still be decided but it will include a main dish, salad, fruit, dessert and lemonade. AARP Smart Driving Course Friday, July 25 9:00 am-1:00 pm $15 ($20 non-AARP members) This is the new and improved AARP Mature Driver Safety class. The 4-hour course’s objectives are: Learn research-based safety strategies that can reduce crashes; understand the links among the driver, vehicle, road environment, and how this awareness encourages safer behavior (& how aging/medications/health affect driving); Know how to drive safely when sharing the road with other road users; Learn the newest safety and advanced features in vehicles; Explore new ways to travel. This course is for those who previously completed the 8-hour course. Senior Center membership is not required to attend this course. Many insurance agencies give discounts for completing this course. Mary Tsuei is the instructor for this course. Register at the Senior Center in advance with payment of cash or check (checks payable to “AARP”). 3 Sunshine Club Needs Your Input! The Senior Advisory Commission has a Sunshine Club Subcommittee whose primary purpose is to develop an outreach program for Seniors who may be ill, homebound, lonely, depressed or could just use a check-in phone call on occassions. Cinda started working for the City of Milpitas 30 years ago in the Finance Department. She transfered to Recreation Services 14 years ago and has worked the Front Desk as a Public Services Assistant at the Senior Center, Community Center and Sports Center. For the past 2 years she has been the smiling face you see when you enter the Senior Center. She’s not quite sure where retirement will take her, but its almost a guarentee that she’ll be spending a lot of time with her dog Maggie, gardening and enjoying nature, and just being “Nana” to her four grandchildren. Please join us in saying thank you and wishing her well on this new stage of her life. Oh, and if you have any good advice on what to do when retired, please be sure to let her know! Reminder of New Fees & Membership Cards at the Senior Center In May, Milpitas Recreation Services began using a new registration system for memberships, programs, classes and rentals. The Senior Center began using the new system in mid-June. With all purchases totalling $10-$50, a $1 transaction fee is added and $3 is added for purchases of $51 and up. Only Lunch Cards purchased at the Front Desk with a credit card will have a transaction fee added. When you renew your membership, you will get a new membership card and new photo. Yearly renewals will still be required but the expiration will be one year from when you pay your membership fees, no longer every September. You will receive a notice a month prior to your membership expiration. Santa Clara County Fair July 31-August 3 The Santa Clara County Fair is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year and is located at the San Jose Fairgrounds (Tully Rd and Monterey Hwy). There is free admission for Seniors on Thursday, July 31. Treasure Island Culinary Institute Tuesday, July 22 Tuesday, August 19 10:30 am-3:30 pm (check-in 10:15 am) $5* (+$15 day of trip) Students at the Treasure Island Culinary Institute’s dining room will again dazzle us with a fine meal on one of the most interesting islands in the San Francisco bay. What a view and what a meal! *A $5 fee is for transportation. $15 (in exact cash) is due to the driver on trip day (cost of lunch, tax and server gratuity). Senior Center Programs Quarterly Birthday Celebration Tuesday, September 16 • 11:30 am (RSVP by September 12) The Senior Center celebrates birthdays on a quarterly basis during our lunch program. The suggested lunch contribution is $3 for those 60 and up ($6 for guests under 60). Birthday cake and raffle prize are included. Beginning Yoga Tuesdays and Fridays • 9:00 am Enjoy the many benefits of Yoga (reduced stress, and blood pressure, increased energy levels, immunity, cognitive functions, improved balance, steadiness and sleep). Please wear stretch pants and t-shirt and bring your own mat, large towel, yoga strap (or old neck tie). Please Note: Maximum of 25 participants per day and Senior Center membership is required to attend. Quilting Bee 1st & 3rd Tuesday of month 1:30 pm This program for those who enjoy sewing! If working with fabric and creating memories is your thing, come join in! This drop-in program requires only a Senior Center membership. Quilters will be responsible for purchasing their own supplies for quilting projects. Bingo Program • Wednesdays, 1:15-3:30 pm • 1st & 2nd Tuesday evening of month with 5:00 pm Potluck Dinner option and 6:00 pm Bingo session: July 1 & 8, Aug 5 & 12 Cash prizes (amounts determined by number of players). Minimum buy-in is $5, which includes a paper pack of 10 games (6 cards per game). Extra packs are $4 each (players must play their own cards, no splitting/sharing of packs). Bingo sessions are for ages 18 and up, and Senior Center membership is not required. 5 Zumba Gold Tuesdays & Thursdays • 10:00 am • $2 Drop-in Zumba is a fitness class with Latin flair. It brings dance style rythms in a fun party-like environment while promoting strength, flexibility and balance. Zumba Gold is modified for older adults. You’ll feel like you’ve gotten a workout but without feeling pain or exhaustion. Participants pay $2 at the Front Desk each week (a 5-visit pass is also available for $10). Genealogy Research 2nd & 4th Thursdays • 1:00-3:00 pm Have you ever wondered where your family originated beyond what your immediate family members can remember? Now’s your chance! This group will help you research your family tree. The leader has researched her own family tree and helped many others get started. A material fee of $5 is payable to the leader (Roxann Wahl) for a Genealogy Research Guide. Computers Senior Center members can use the public access computers at the Senior Center on a first come first serve basis. There is a 30 minute time limit when people are waiting. Users are not allowed to download items to the computer or save information on the computer. Users may not visit non-appropriate websites. A daily limit of 5 sheets of paper is available per user for printing. Please Note: Senior Center staff do not provide computer instruction or repairs. Participants are required to sign-in upon entering the program room. Movie Day 2nd & 4th Mondays of Month • 1:00 pm Free movie and popcorn. Check the Senior Center bulletin board or the back of this newsletter for upcoming movie titles. Let us know if you have a movie suggestion. Bridge Afternoons • 1:00-4:00 pm Tables are available up for players to form their own groups. If you want to learn or need a refresher course, lessons are available on Mondays, 1:004:00 pm in the Game Room. Chair Exercises Mondays & Thursdays • 11:10 am-12:00 pm You can improve your balance, stretch & tone muscles, and strengthen legs and arms by following the vidoe tape of chair-based exercises. Please Note: Space is limited to the first 25 people and there is no saving chairs for other people. Crochet & Knit Mondays • 9:00-11:30 am Join in the fun of crocheting or knitting in a social setting. You can see what other people are making while you work on your own project. If you need help getting started, there are plenty of people to learn from! Bring your own supplies. Sing, Sing, Sing Tuesdays • 10:30-11:30 am Here’s your chance to sing a variety of songs, including some favorites of yester-year, such as “Shine On Harvest Moon,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Bill Bailey.” If you are not confident in your singing ability, don’t worry, no prior singing experience is needed! Book Club 3rd Tuesday of month • 10:30-11:30 am Each month the Book Club meets to discuss their recently read book and to receive the next book. The Book Club is limited to 12 people each month. If you are interested, please contact the Front Desk. Ukelele Wednesdays • 1:30-2:30 pm Bring your ukelele and join in the fun! It’s a great place to learn if you don’t know how to play. Shall We Dance Fridays • 1:30 pm Exercise while having fun! This afternoon social dance session features mostly line and folk dances so there’s no need for a partner! Please Note: Space is limited to 40 people. Game Rooms The Senior Center has two rooms for games. The Table Game Room features five tables for playing table-top games (i.e. cards, tile, board games), and is reserved for Bridge lessons on Wednesday afternoons. The other Game Room has two pool tables and three ping pong tables. Time limit for games are 15 minutes for Ping Pong and 20 minutes for pool. Players must wait in line for their turn. You’ll learn how to paint flowers, birds, insects and landscapes on rice paper and the proper way to handle ink, water and color. In a recent study of participants (average age of 74.6), 89% of them experienced improved upper body strength, 78% experienced improved lower body strength, 78% experienced improved dynamic agility/balance and 67 % experienced improved static balance. Nutrition education will also be covered to help you meet your fitness goals. The instructor is a highly trained fitness instructor who is experienced in working with older adults. Michelle Creamer is a Certified Personal Trainer and Senior Fitness Specialist that you can work with directly in our Fitness Room. She will meet with you to talk about your needs and goals, put toghether a workout schedule and help train you in the Fitness Room to help meet your goals.
