Year No. 8, Edition No. 41 Into the shadows A bittersweet parting for 9th Special Operations Squadron By LAUREN SAGE REINLIE Northwest Florida Daily News Early Friday morning, Oct. 3, before the guests arrived, Lt. Col. Doug Distaso took his 11-year-old son, Colby, out to the flight line for a final, quiet tribute to the stalwart MC-130P Combat Shadow. The pair circled the hulking aircraft, Distaso pointing out its specialized radars and the doors where special forces troops hopped out into remote war zones. In less than an hour, with all the pomp of a military ceremony, Distaso and the rest of Northwest Florida would say good-bye to the 9th Special Operations Squadron and their long ties with the Combat Shadow. But, first, a few moments of reflection. “If I had time to be sad before, I didn’t know it,” admitted Distaso, the squadron’s commander, as he eyed one of the last planes at Hurlburt Field. “It would have been a lot harder if we had been sitting around and staring at each other.” As the squadron has ramped down its ranks — cutting from 125 airmen to about 30 in the past few months — it hasn’t let up its pace, meaning most members have been deployed for the past year and a half. There wasn’t much time for nostalgia. “Now looking at it here, this plane has been in the air for thousands of hours and had so many days deployed to get stuff moved overseas and put people in the places they need to be,” Distaso said. “It was a very good aircraft.” On Friday, the 9th SOS shut down at Hurlburt Field, leaving its personnel and aircraft behind and moving in name only to Cannon Air Force Base. The Combat Shadow, a special mission NICK TOMECEK | Daily News Lt. Col. Doug Distaso, right and his son Colby Distaso, 11, share a laugh in front of an MC-130J Commando 2 aircraft on Friday before a ceremony moves the 9th Special Operations squadron out of Northwest Florida to Cannon Air Force Base. aircraft used for moving special forces troops and supplies, returned from its final overseas deployment late last month. It will be retired next June. The aircraft has a long and storied history in Northwest Florida, where it arrived over 25 years ago. It’s flown countless missions refueling helicopters and dropping off or picking up special forces troops and supplies. Master Sgt. Rico Watkins, who has flown the plane since 2002, said he will miss being a part of the squadron’s mission. “You feel like you are close to the battle,” he said. “We can put troops on the ground almost anywhere to help with the fight.” He did note, though, he would not mourn the aircraft’s lack of good air conditioning. One of Watkins’ fondest memories was when the squadron deployed at the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003. “It was a good lesson in camaraderie,” he said. “We were in this isolated place with basically nothing. We had to work together to do everything, build a gym, a chow hall, all that. It was a good time.” Watkins doesn’t know yet exactly what his next job will be. The Combat Shadows will be replaced with the newer MC130J Commando IIs, but they will not be located at Hurlburt. “It’s bittersweet,” he said. “This is the only plane I’ve ever flown. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but now it’s time to look to what’s next.” 801st SOAMXS Airman earns Bronze Star By LAUREN SAGE REINLIE Northwest Florida Daily News Earlier this year, as Air Force personnel were pulling out of Afghanistan, a young staff sergeant was leading the way. On a remote base in western Afghanistan, Staff Sgt. Reuben Bocock, a 28year-old Airman from Hurlburt Field, was charged with training a unit of Afghani airmen to maintain and deploy their own helicopter fleet so they could continue to battle terrorism after the Americans went home. He was the first American air advisor to do so and his work was used as an example for other fleets across the country. On Thursday, Oct. 2, Bocock was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his accomplishments, a unique honor for such a young Airman. “Combat is hard enough, but advising, that’s the graduate level of getting the other nation to carry its own weight,” Col. Bill West, Hurlburt’s commander, said during the award ceremony. “We were told to turn over the mission to Afghanistan and they did it, and he was the first to do it.” Bocock arrived in Afghanistan in April of 2013 to a daunting task. Challenges included major language barriers —even skilled interpreters often did not know how to translate technical maintenance jargon into Dari, the language spoken in the area. Then there were threats of attack, from outside the base as well as inside, and the base’s remote location meant coming under fire during many cross-country trips for parts. Through all that, Bocock was able to train the Afghani colonel and about two dozen Afghani airmen, producing Afghanistan’s first autonomous unit capable of flying Mi-17s, the Russian helicopters popular in the country’s military. Bocock, who returned from Afghanistan earlier this spring, said he was proud of his accomplishments. “I was able to teach an Afghan colonel everything the Air Force taught me,” he said. (Begin optional trim but only if absolutely necessary) The airman, who now works on CV-22 Ospreys with the 801st Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, said when he was first told he would receive the medal, he didn’t think it was that big of a deal. But, West made sure he understood the significance during the ceremony. “They told him, ‘You got it, make it work,’ and he did,” West said. “We are very lucky to have him here.” NICK TOMECEK | Daily News Air Force Staff Sgt. At the end, the mighty AC-130 gunship towered over their heads. At 90 years old, John Senneff was impressed. The World War II pilot remembers diving down to about 300 or 400 feet above the ground in his single-engine, single-seat P-47 fighter-bomber to take out trains and other targets. The AC-130 gunships, with a crew of 13, usually remain at a relatively safe 9,000 feet, and can still hit their targets spot on. “We were out there ducking tree branches and telephone wires to be on target,” Senneff recalled. “What they can do today is so different.” NICK TOMECEK | Daily News Technical Sgt. Antonio Barranca shows off the 105 mm gun on the side of an AC-130U gunship on Friday during a tour of the 4th Special Operations Squadron on Friday at Hurlburt Field. The tour was part of the 86th Fighter Bomber Group reunion that is town this weekend. Senneff was one of nine remaining members of the 86th FighterBomber Group in town for their annual reunion. On Friday, the veterans and about 60 of their family members and friends were treated to a tour of Hurlburt Field. Their first stop was the 4th Special Opera- Magnolia Grill magnoliagrillfwb.com 24/7 Access 10% Military Discount 2109038 (850) 243-9555 By LAUREN SAGE REINLIE tions Squadron, home of the Spooky gunship. The young squadron members took pleasure in leading the group around and teaching them about the capabilities of the gunship. The vets had plenty of questions, including what effect kickback from the aircraft’s largest gun, the 105mm, had on its ability to stay horizontal. The P47 was armed only with a 50-caliber gun, operated by the pilot. “It’s really an honor to have them here, to get to talk to the guys who have been there and done that and be exposed to our heritage,” said the 4th’s Major Bart Doyle. John Dolny, a 93year-old vet who lives in Danbury, Wisc., said he appreciated hearing from the young guys and visiting the area’s bases. Last year, they visited the F-35 squadron at Eglin. But, the real draw for Danbury is swapping war stories with the few men still alive from his unit. “It was different when we were young and pretty excited about everything that was going on,” Dolny said. “There were a lot of casualties – a lot – but they didn’t let anything bother them. They did what they were supposed to do and they did it well.” Coin Show sponsored by Ft. F Walton Beach F Coin Club. Saturday, October 18, 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday, October 19, 10 am – 4 pm.
