TRANSITION:
It is that time of year when our year 5s and 6s are looking at
options for their futures and we are hosting tours for prep
families for 2014. This is a fabulous time for reflection, when
we sit back and take stock of what we are doing well and
where we see opportunities for improvement.

Prep 2014 Open Afternoon, 2.30-3.30pm
It is interesting to discuss with prospective parents how we
organise our learning around significant concepts. At Rolling
Hills, key concepts in the areas of social studies,
environmental studies, history, economics, health and
science are presented through inquiries. Children live in a
constant state of curiosity and learning in their lives and
inquiry and I-Time are positive vehicles for this learning.
Inquiry comes from learning, exploring and being interested
in our world. We structure our learning frameworks so that
students can investigate areas of interest to them under the
umbrella of whole school concepts.

STAFFING:
We wish Mrs Nettelbeck and Mrs Thomas all the best for
their Long Service Leave. Mrs Nettelbeck is going to Europe
for 6 weeks and Mrs Thomas is going to America. I am sure
they will have great stories to tell on their return. ‘Bon
Voyage’ to you both!
Last term we received the department’s Compact which is a
brief document outlining the roles of schools and the roles
of government in providing quality education and future
options for all students. I am confident we are doing all we
can within our resources to deliver the best possible
educational experiences for all children. We offer a diverse
curriculum from P – 6 that provides enrichment or
remediation in many forms. We have a rich specialist

learning activities within the class and each specialist
program offers opportunities for extension for students
with specific interests. We have a broad ranging
integration program that caters for a range of special
needs in the mainstream program, to the benefit of all.
These achievements make me very proud to be principal
of Rolling Hills Primary School, so it is no challenge to find
things to share during a tour.

Curriculum Day:
Last Friday our professional learning programs were
focussed on Numeracy and Literacy. We are very
fortunate to have staff in our school who are willing
and capable of leading professional learning for all
staff.
BUILDING REPAIRS—
THE GOOD NEWS AND THE BAD NEWS:
Last week we received our buildings audit from
the department. I was very excited to see we would have 2
major capital works programs on the main building and
the grade 4 portable. The grade 3 portable will be
removed in the future as it is surplus to our enrolment
numbers. The bad news is that we have been given no
date, but it will not be this year.
Our Maths program was delivered around
2 main themes:
1. Supporting students who have
difficulty learning Maths
2. Errors and Misconceptions in Maths
An essential factor in the successful learning in all
areas, but particularly in Maths, is attitude. We
need parents and students to have a belief that
students can and will be successful.
CREATIVITY AND PLAY:
Thanks to Miss Den Elzen and Miss MacMillan for their
recent work with our neighbourhood kindergartens. We
have had fabulous discussions about our I-Time program
and what is understood by our families. Our Prep program
is a student-centred program where students explore,
investigate and play within their own areas of interest.
From here our teachers build on their existing knowledge
by challenging their thinking, their language and their
concept development. (Another label for this form of
teaching is Developmental Curriculum because it starts
with the child and builds on skills at their developmental
level.)
Our English program was on ‘Class Libraries’, how to
establish, use and manage them to ensure students
have a range of Fiction and Non Fiction
books to read and in areas of interest to
them.
As teachers we recognise that some students
require additional support and extra time to
consolidate their concepts so we plan our
curriculum accordingly.
Every day I read and hear more about the
importance of play to help children establish
their social constructs, develop their
language, build confidence and establish acceptable norms
or values. It is interesting to note that many experts have
referred to helicopter parents, who hover around their
children, and intervene whenever they feel a challenge
looming. It is dealing with this very challenge and finding a
suitable outcome that develops resilience in a child. When
parents encourage their children to confront and solve
these challenges, they are telling their children that they
have confidence in them and they trust them to be able to
manage themselves.
EDUCATION WEEK
This year for Education Week we will be inviting
families to visit classes at two different times
throughout the week to observe students in their
regular class program. We have allocated 2 sessions,
one on Monday and one on Thursday so families
have the opportunities to visit both the class
program and the specialist program. Specialist
programs and extra curricula activities will take
place at their scheduled time. Both German and
Chinese classes run on Thursdays. We hope the
times selected allow mums and dads to visit:

NAPLAN
It’s that time of year when our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students
undertake their NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN is only one aspect
of assessment that measures student growth at RHPS. Please check

NAPLAN assessments will be conducted from Tuesday 14 th MayThursday 16th May. Assessments are conducted in Maths and English
over the 3 days.
Autism Awareness Month
April was Autism Awareness Month. I have included two poems,
written by mums, which I found on one of my Facebook pages. Ethan
does not attend RHPS – I suspect Ethan lives in USA. However, the
sentiments could be from any person who has special needs.
I am Ethan.
You may not understand me, or the way I feel today.
You may not understand my reasoning for things I do or say.
The reasons why I'm so loud and say things over & over again,
Why I run so differently or lose my homework every now & then.
I write my letters backwards and sometimes numbers too,
and when in a conversation, I'll say "Guess what" 100 times to you.
Too much noise, light, or excitement can set me in a spin.
I don't like the way these pants feel rubbing against my skin.
I try to be good, but sometimes it's hard to control,
I have to do it, it's an impulse, I don't always do what I'm told.
Ketchup, Ranch and BBQ sauce on everything I eat,
sometimes I have days that I just can't sit still in my seat.
I like to talk a lot even when it's out of turn,
my mind plays tricks on me and interrupts what I'm trying to learn.
Sit up straight, wipe my face, and play ever so soft,
some of these things I have trouble with and I usually lose my train of
thought.
I didn't mean to spill the milk mom, or slam the door so hard,
everyone else is done with their homework, I don't know where to
start?
My heart's as big as gold, my feelings get hurt too,
I get sad, cry and have bad days just like you.
My brain works differently than other girls and boys,
but one thing always holds true, I can give your life so much joy.
I get frustrated so easily and my hand won't work that way,
I don't understand why those other kids won't let me come over and
play.
Please don't think of me any differently or love of me any less,
I'm just like other kids and trying to do my best.
I am very special in my own unique way, and every moment with me,
you'll never have a dull day.

The new Entertainment Books are here!!! They are still at a
cost of only $65 per book, and $13 of each book goes towards
fundraising at our school.
To order, you can purchase over the counter at the school
office, or you can order online at the following website:
Please be aware that the forms must be returned to the
office no later than 4pm on Monday 6th May.
We are also inviting parents, neighbors, family & friends to have
a cup of tea or coffee & either a delicious Bakers Delight scone
or finger bun with us in the staffroom on Tuesday, 14 th May
between 9am - 10am. For catering purposes, please return the
form that was sent home with your youngest, or drop into the
office to pick a notice up. We would love to see as many faces
as possible.

My role:
Learning Support, assisting with the speech therapy
program and reading fluency.
My Family: Widowed with one son.
I have grown up in Melbourne and
lived my married life in Chirnside Park.
My time away from school is filled by a
large family of brothers and sisters, a
very special son and daughter-in-law
and a 23 month old grandson, whom I
adore.
My family:
I live with my husband and two children in Warranwood. I
grew up in the outer east and love it so much I have never
wanted to move away.
My pets:
We have two small dogs (who think they’re big dogs) Marley the Silky Terrier and Gizmo a Poodle-Cross as well
as two hungry, kitchen-residing goldfish - Bert and Ernie.
Career:
I have been working with the Department of Education for
over 40 years and during that time I have had the
privilege of working with many children, families,
Principals, fellow teachers and school support staff. I have
taught Grades Prep to Grade Six as a class teacher and as
a Specialist in Reading Recovery, music and for a short
time as a Librarian and Physical Education teacher. I was
Assistant Principal and Acting Principal at Croydon North
for over 11 years.
My spare time:
As the week is very busy for us all, it’s nice on weekends
to just ‘be’. As a family we play board games or spend
time in the garden or go out for a milkshake. I also love
walking our dogs (I should say that they walk me…) while
my children ride their bikes.
Otherwise ‘me’ time is reading a good book in front of the
fire. What luxury!
Spare Time:
I enjoy socialising with friends, going to live theatre, the
movies, looking after my garden, travelling and of course
going to see Collingwood win matches. I have recently
been to Vanuata, Rome, Vienna, Prague and England and
I am planning to go to New York and to drive around
Ireland in the near future.
Favourite TV show:
The Big Bang Theory.
Favourite food:
Spaghetti bolognaise, home made chocolate cake and for
a healthy treat, blueberries!
Music:
I like all sorts of music and recently went to a Paul Simon
concert, which was great.

Lilydale High School invites you to attend our Information
Evening. This information evening will be for parents and
guardians of children currently in Year 6 who will be
starting in Year 7 at secondary school in 2014.
Speakers will provide information and printed material will
be distributed. There will be several student performances
and tours of the school featuring displays of students’ work
