She displays a godly lifestyle while ministering to hurting people. She wakes up everyday wanting to do better. Her life is centered in Him and her main purpose is to serve Him no matter what. This is Charlotte Kay Smith’s definition of a “Woman With A Purpose”. Charlotte stated that her ministry is hair and she “ministers to people behind the chair”. Her hearts desire is to always be a “Woman With A Purpose” the best possible way that she can. Charlotte was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Her “doing hair” started as a young child with her dolls. She stated that she would style her dolls hair and her mother would call out frantically looking for her combs and brushes. She knew exactly where to find them - in Charlotte’s possession. At the age of 14 years old, God inspired her to professionally do hair. She started out with her grandmother trusting her to “press” (straighten) her hair. Charlotte enjoyed it because her grandmother would always talk about the Lord and encourage her to realize the gift that God had placed in her. Two years passed and she was still pressing her grandmother’s hair. On one occasion, her grandmother gave her a “Black Book”. This would be Charlotte’s first unofficial appointment book. Her grandmother had booked several appointments with elderly ladies in the neighborhood. She enjoyed every appointment because she would press their hair, keep them company as they fed her good meals. Little did she know, they were getting their hair pressed as God continued to impregnate her with the desire to become a licensed cosmetologist. When Charlotte entered the 10th grade in high school, her mother asked her what was it she wanted to do in life. At that time, she answered, “I want to be a beautician.” She knew she was not college-bound, but God-inspired her to be a cosmetologist. She then changed high schools so that she could attend one that taught cosmetology as a trade. She began to cut the football players hair and earned the nickname “Squirrel”. She was very proud of that nickname. Charlotte became a licensed cosmetologist while in her senior year of high school. She worked in a neighborhood beauty salon until two years later where she was hired in an upper class salon. She stated that she worked for rich people doing hair, manicures, and pedicures and that caused her vision to expand. Life began to change when in December, 1981, she married and traveled with her husband, Ronald Smith during his military career. They were stationed at Fort Hood and added their daughter Kendoll Sherrell to their family in 1984. As a result of the Soul Winning Action Team (S.W.A.T.) from Christian House of Prayer (CHOP) knocking on their door in 1985, her husband was led to the Lord and they were invited to the church. After 2-3 months of visiting CHOP, they joined as a family. Being raised in a traditional church setting, Charlotte was a little leery of the “doings” of the church such as speaking in tongues and the laying on of hands. God made a Believer out of her when she had an experience of the laying on of hands. They then enrolled their daughter, Kendoll into the Perfect Praise Daycare and Academy where she received a good, strong Christian education and foundation until she transitioned to the 7th grade in public school. In 1985, after settling in the Killeen/Fort Hood area, Charlotte started working at La Mil’s Beauty Salon. A year later, her husband received orders to go to Panama. Prior to leaving, Bishop and Pastor Valerie took them to dinner at Golden Corral. She was asked by Bishop what her plans would be when she returned. She answered without even hesitating that she desired to open a Christian beauty salon. She thanks God for Pastor Valerie inspiring her to fulfill her dream. She stated that she took Bishop to Panama in the form of tapes and CDs. When it was time for the family to return to the states, the military gave her husband three choices, Georgia, Hawaii, or Texas. He left the choice up to her and she chose Fort Hood, Texas without hesitation for spiritual growth. Upon their return from Panama in 1988, she went back to work at La Mils Beauty Salon. Her clientele was predominately ladies from Christian House of Prayer except Pastor Valerie. Charlotte was disturbed by the way Pastor Valerie was being treated and felt that she wasn’t respected as she thought she should have been. She finally had an opportunity to style Pastor Valerie’s hair. It was three years later, she stated that Pastor Valerie had not forgotten the conversation concerning the business. Over a period of time, as she and Pastor Valerie engaged in conversation during her hair appointment, she was asked what were her thoughts on opening a Christian beauty salon in Copperas Cove. Charlotte gave her an emphatic and resounding “YES!” Pastor Valerie encouraged her to go home and talk to her husband and pray about it first. She did and he was on board immediately. Because she was nervous and thought she was too young (24-25 years old at that time) to make a big decision like that, Charlotte asked her mother and other friends about the big move. They were all excited and encouraged her to move forward. The next time Charlotte spoke with Pastor Valerie, she told her yes she was ready. The next step was to finance the business. They started with a combined amount of $10,000.00. Pastor Valerie sowed into Charlotte’s life because she saw God’s plan for her future. Charlotte informed the owner of La Mil’s three months later that she was opening a salon. In April 1989, Crown & Glory Christian Beauty Salon was birthed and opened on Avenue D in Copperas Cove, TX., which was named by Pastor Valerie who was the owner, overseer, and accountant at that time. Charlotte submitted to her leadership and learned the business thoroughly. She enjoyed during the work. Charlotte described the salon as an old house that transformed from a rag bag to a mansion after Pastor Valerie put the midas touch on it. Her salon confession is: People are standing in line to get into Crown & Glory so that we can do their hair. Our chairs are filled with satisfied customers from the very beginning to the end of the day or whenever we are open. Our customers hair is healthy regardless if its short or long. We come against scalp disease, stagnant growth or anything that will hinder the hair from being healthy in any way. These and those and them are hearing about Crown & Glory only and this report we accept only. We are anointed and appointed ministers of hair to do the work set before us. We conduct ourselves as women of God and the kingdom way does not offend us. Every bill in our life and the customers life in this shop is met. We are above and beyond givers to the kingdom of God. This year, we claim doubles for me and thee. And being fully persuaded that what He has promised, He is able also to perform. In Jesus’ Name. Amen & Amen Due to a steady increase in clientele and stylists, Crown & Glory Beauty Salon moved every two years. Charlotte stated that each move was to accommodate the people and it was always a move from faith to faith and from glory to glory. She recalled one occasion where the salon relocated and had to be closed for one week for renovations. She was concerned about the stylists being without pay for one week but Bishop and Pastor Valerie paid them until the renovations on the new shop were completed. This act of kindness caused her to grow personally even stronger in her faith in God. The Lord spoke to Pastor Valerie and told her to decrease so that Charlotte could increase and Charlotte became the sole owner of the salon. She then opened a second location, having one shop in two locations, one in Killeen and one in Copperas Cove. Two years later, the Copperas Cove shop was closed and she moved to her present location at 1206 Jasper Rd. in Killeen where she’s been faithfully serving her clients for the past nine years. In 2010, God placed a vision of a desire in her heart for a business plaza where everyone in the church could be in one place. She mentioned it to Pastor Valerie. No more was said about it until God placed the vision for The Village Square on Bishop and Pastor Valerie’s heart. Charlotte thought this was a confirmation of her vision. As time passed and she was asked to open her salon in The Village Square, Charlotte waited on the Lord to confirm her move. She talked about a sign she truly believe came from God. At 4 p.m. in the afternoon, a large owl appeared in a tree behind her salon. One of her clients of foreign decent shared with her that the owl was a Eurasian Eagle Owl and is usually seen in the Middle East, Asia, North Africa and Europe. Charlotte researched the spiritual significance of the appearing of the rare bird and found the name of the owl to mean “Peace Be Still”. She understood that it was not her time or season to relocate the salon. She had to obey God and wait on Him. Meanwhile, another salon had signed a contract to move to the Village. Crown & Glory Beauty Salon still remains at 1206 Jasper Road in Killeen, Texas where Charlotte continues to be a “Woman With A Purpose”. Crown & Glory is an extension as an auxiliary at Christian House of Prayer Ministries. She ministers to Pastor Valerie Holcomb by taking care of her hair care needs and being available whenever and wherever she is needed. In conjunction to that, she also ministers to those that God lay on her heart that are sick, shut-in or others that are in need of her services. She just wants to be a blessing to God’s people through ministry, salvation and leading people to church all while enhancing their external beauty. When ministering to Pastor Valerie at her home, she would look around and see the fruit of the blessings that they had received and she believed God for her own. Her faith was increased. Three homes and 5-6 cars later, all she can say is “Look at what the Lord has done”. She states that being connected to them caused her to see her own life of faith. She contributes her success to three basic principles: 1. Forgiveness, 2. Tithing, and 3. Being connected to a local church and pastor. She confesses her favorite Scripture II Chronicles 20:20 daily and encourages all to put this Scripture at the top of their prayer list and follow those that through faith and patience inherit the kingdom. Charlotte believes that through her natural and spiritual connection comes prosperity. She has committed to take the right road even through passages of pain and disappointment. She’s grateful to have made the connection with Bishop and Pastor Valerie over 30 years ago and now 30 years later, they still make an impact and have some influence in her life. She contributes her success of being a “Woman With A Purpose” to knowing that her purpose is to glorify God. Even though she was saved at the age of 19, she learned her true purpose through the preaching and teaching of the Word of God through Bishop Nate and Pastor Valerie Holcomb. She states that they have made an impact on her family’s life that the world could not ever do. She’s blessed by knowing, serving and sowing into their lives. In closing, when asked, “What’s next?”, Charlotte answered, “To pay it forward!” She plans to inspire other young ladies to be a “Woman With A Purpose” by being available to speak into their lives and training the young cosmetologists to be the best that they can be in their profession.
