FAMILY STRONG A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Jubilee Meets Tragedy Last Sunday I was intending to preach a dynamic sermon on the mistakes of the “rich young ruler”. The message would address the proper place of money in the lives of believers. It would also reinforce our Jubilee campaign. By late Wednesday it was obvious that the message had to take a different direction. I didn’t know that there would be a reporter here from Al Jazeera News Network. I didn’t know that a military family would bring a friend that was actually shot at on post Wednesday. I didn’t know how many of my congregation had direct ties to the tragedy. I didn’t know that a reporter from the New York Times would call and ask what I was preaching about Sunday. I didn’t know that my quote would be picked up by newspapers from Boston to Hawaii. What I did know was that I didn’t want to say something that made God look silly or the church look irrelevant. I opened my Bible to find comfort and inspiration. Romans chapter 8 ministered to me, and I hope it ministers to you. Romans 8:35-39 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
