Visitors will be able to walk through the pods causing them to sway and
bump into each other. Every few minutes the pods will slowly deflate and
the lights within them dim in a mesmerising cycle.

Welcome
Gallery two will be filled with a glowing landscape of suspended
inflatable pods of differing shapes and sizes. The pods resemble the
beautiful microscopic imagery of bacteria and cells that live within us.
Participation and getting hands on with artworks is the theme of some
of the exhibitions coming to Durham Art Gallery this Autumn and Winter.
We open with Generation Air, an installation of inflatable art created by
Spacecadets in response to cells and organisms from the human body.
This is followed by Generation Noise by Owl Project, where visitors can
transform their own cut out shapes into sound waves.
You will also be able to explore the spectrum of printmaking from the
screenprints of Eduardo Paolozzi, the artist who described himself as
‘a wizard in Toytown’ to the new works in Glossary, an exhibition which
examines the various techniques of printmaking from potato prints to
those made using the latest technology.
There will be lots of opportunities to get involved in workshops and
activities throughout school holidays or relax with tea and cake in the café.

Visitors to the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery are being invited to
touch, handle and climb through the artworks on display in their new
autumn exhibition – Generation Air.

The exhibition is specifically for family audiences and can be enjoyed by
toddlers, teenagers and grown-ups alike.
Artists, Spacecadets, are transforming the gallery into an other-worldly
space where people of all ages can explore and play.

Inspired by the human body, the exhibition will be made up of four large
inflated organisms with a life of their own.
Visitors will be able to crawl through the tunnels or lie on floor cushions
to view the inside of the structures. The softly glowing forms move and
interact with visitors creating plenty of opportunities for a hands-on
experience.

The second in a series of exhibitions specifically aimed at family
audiences sees artists ‘Owl Project’ build human powered sound
machines from wood.

Visitors can draw a sound wave and feed it into a machine to create their
own noises. The space will be transformed into a huge sound studio
where visitors of all ages can play with
many kinds of musical instruments.

Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005) was one of the pioneers of the pop art
movement in the UK. Born in Scotland, Paolozzi was a compulsive
collector and a jumbler of icons. He is equally revered for his mechanistic
sculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects. The artist, who described
himself as 'a wizard in Toytown', transformed the mundane, the derelict
and the mass-produced into images that zap with electric eclecticism and
impress with their graphic complexity. 'Carrots into pomegranates!'

A lot of people think that printmaking is about reproductions. Nothing
could be further from the truth. Every print in Glossary is an original.
That is to say it doesn’t exist in any other form and was conceived and
made purely as a print.

General Dynamic F.U.N, is a series of fifty screenprints and
photolithographs created between 1965 and 1970. Here Paolozzi makes
brilliant use of the technologies of mass-reproduction, the household
names and familiar faces of consumer advertising, high fashion and
Hollywood. The artist's friend and sometime collaborator, J.G. Ballard,
described General Dynamic F.U.N as a 'unique guidebook to the electric
garden of our minds'.

Glossary celebrates the very best in contemporary printmaking. Each of
the twelve prints in this exhibition has been made using a different
printmaking process, from potato printing to digital. A series of specially
commissioned films complements the exhibition and takes the viewer on
a journey through the private studios of the seven represented artists.
Glossary is a Northern Print touring exhibition supported by Arts Council
England through the Strategic Touring Fund.
