CTR CONCERT: We’ve Come This Far by Faith!
Join us on Sunday, October 19 at 5:00 pm as we take a musical journey
through the history of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Community! The multimedia concert will include pictures from our years as community, and lyrics to
favorite songs helping us raise the roof in celebration! The encore concert is a
continuation of our celebration of 25 years as a Catholic parish (2/4/1989), and
the 14th anniversary of the dedication of our House for the Church
(10/21/2000).
Christ the Redeemer has been supporting our area homeless since before
we built this church. Each year we raise funds and build a house for Habitat
and host the Hope Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac. As part of our
25th Anniversary year celebration we will continue our mission to take care of
society’s most vulnerable by accepting donations to benefit the homeless. Donations of men's and women's socks, underwear, band aids, and foot powder
will be accepted at the concert and the entire weekend of October 18/19.
Light refreshments and socializing will take place in the Bethany Room
afterward.
St. Nicholas Project Update
Sign up will continue after Masses through the month of October for the
2nd Annual St. Nicholas Project. Families of all ages, seniors and singles are
welcome to join us for this parish wide day of outreach. All participants over the
age of 18 will be required to fill out a background check unless previously completed. Please check your calendars prior to committing to participate. The
agencies we work for trust that the work will be completed that day. Although
we cannot take requests for a particular job, please know what an important gift
you bring to our community and the agencies that so many in need rely on.
Feel free to call Lisa Pratt or Karen Swietlik in the parish office with any
questions.

Christ the Redeemer, Lake Orion
It seems that at least one thing goes wrong at a wedding.
Most of the time it’s not a big deal, but once in a while something major will happen. I remember a wedding when the
bride had forgotten to bring her bouquet, so we waited while
her brother rushed home to find it. A couple of times in my
career the organist didn’t show, so I not only presided at the
wedding, I also played the processional and recessional marches on the organ. I
heard the story before I came to Christ the Redeemer of the time when the maid
of honor took sick the day of the wedding, and the woman who had been their
sponsor (couple) stepped in at the last minute. (I don’t think she wore the maid
of honor’s dress.) On the wedding day it feels like the wedding is ruined, but
afterward, these are the stories we love to tell.
The wedding in today’s Gospel had one crisis erupting after another. First,
the guests refused to come. Then the king destroyed the city (once again we will
have to excuse Matthew for inserting the destruction of Jerusalem into the story). Finally, more guests came in, both the good and the bad. But there is one
guest who is not wearing a wedding garment. He is bound hand and foot and
thrown out into the darkness. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in comparison,
wasn’t this bad.
!But there is something else missing in this wedding. There isn’t a bride,
and the groom doesn’t seem to be in attendance at his own wedding. While the
bride is not named in the story, the father’s of the Church saw her in an unexpected place: the guests are the ones who will marry the Son.!
Jack Shea spells this out more clearly.!“However, the selection that did not
occur at the time of invitation occurs at the wedding feast. It seems that the
guests are the bride. They were not invited to witness a wedding; they were invited to be married to the son. They were not invited to observe; they were invited
to participate. The requirement is a wedding garment, an eagerness to be united
to the son.”
!“This wedding garment signals a readiness to understand and act on Jesus'
teachings. They must make them their own. They must marry the revelation and
bear children, acts of justice, compassion, and love in the world. If they do not
do this and are reduced to silence, a silence of incomprehension, they cannot
remain at the feast.
This is a wedding only for those who want to be married.”
“If a guest comes to the wedding without the intention of marrying, he or
she experiences the opposite. Instead of being within the wedding feast of light,
they are outside in the darkness. Instead of eating with their hands and dancing
with their feet, they are bound hand and foot. Instead of laughing and singing,
they weep and gnash their teeth. They not only are excluded from the community, they live in bitter regret. Their own failures torment them.”(John Shea, “On
Earth as it is in Heaven.”)!
This still leaves the question of the groom? Frederick Niedner suggests this
unlikely character in the story. “In the traditional reading, which sees this parable
as an allegory about the destruction of Jerusalem as God's punishment for the
rejection of Jesus, the crucified Christ would appear among the servants whom
the invited guests abused and killed. Oddly enough, given what finally happened
to Jesus, the treatment he received makes him most like the man at the end of
the parable, the one thrown out. In another way, however, the Christ remains
absent from the story because this parable lacks its two most important characters, namely, the bride and the groom. Enter, then, the crucified and risen Christ
as the groom.” (http://girardianlectionary.net/res/niedner_proper23a.htm)
Fr. Joe
farewell to fr. tom
Fr. Tom Slowinski, a priest from
Detroit, has been staying with me in
the Parish House for the last 6 weeks
or so. Tom completed his treatment
for alcoholism at Guest House in
Minnesota. Guest House is closing
the Minnesota facility and returning
to Lake Orion where it began in
1956. Since Guest House is located
within our parish boundaries, when
the Archdiocese asked if Tom could
stay with me and be a part of our parish ministry during this transition, I
was more than happy to welcome
him to CTR. Tom expects to receive
his new assignment this week; he is
grateful for our hospitality and welcome. Please keep Tom in prayer as
he continues his ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Crazy Catholic Question #5:
When did the sign of the cross originate? What does it mean? What
is the significance of tracing little crosses on our forehead, lips and heart
just before the Gospel is read at Mass?
The practice of tracing the sign of
the cross (right hand to forehead, heart,
left and then right shoulder, sometime
accompanied by the words “In the
name of the Father, Son & the Holy
Spirit, Amen”) is most prominent in
the Roman Catholic Church (that
would be us) but is also practiced in the
Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Lutheran,
Anglican, and Episcopalian churches.
The history of the sign of the cross
goes back as far as Tertullian, an early
church father who lived between A.D.
160 and 220. Tertullian wrote, "In all
our travels and movements, in all our coming
in and going out, in putting off our shoes, at
the bath, at the table, in lighting our candles,
in lying down, in sitting down, in doing whatever occupies us, we mark our foreheads with
the sign of the cross”
Originally, it was just a small cross
traced with the thumb on the forehead.
We don’t really know exactly when the
practice changed to the full upper-body
version, but we do know that the
switch had occurred by the eleventh
century A.D., because A Prayer Book
commissioned by King Henry instructs
to "mark with the holy cross the four sides of
the body.”
The sign of the cross can mean
many things...
•It can be a statement of faith – namely, in the Trinity. When we make the
sign, it’s like a mini-version of the
creed. We are professing our belief in
the Father, and in the Son and in the
Holy Spirit, through movement. Like
in our scriptures, when we pray “in
God’s name” we are both recognizing
God’s presence and consciously bringing ourselves into God’s presence.
•It can be a renewal of baptism. When
we make the sign we are saying in effect, "I have died with Christ and rose
to new life." The sign reminds us that
through our baptism we have been
forever changed and are intimately
connected to the body of Christ. We
are remembering our joining and our
continued membership in this body.
It is a statement of our identity: We
ARE the on-going incarnation,
Christ’s body, alive and living in the
world today. As St. Theresa of Avila
says “Christ has no body but yours,
no hands, no feet on earth but
yours.”
•The sign of the cross can also be a
mark of discipleship. It says that we
are a follower of Jesus. The word
that the members of the early church
used for the sign of the cross is the
same Greek word used for the physical mark that a slave owner put on a
slave, a shepherd put on a sheep and
a general put on a soldier. Like a
stamp of ownership. So, by signing
ourselves we are saying that “I belong to God.”
The three little signs of the cross
traced on our forehead, lips and
heart before the Gospel is read each
Sunday at Mass signify our readiness
or our desire to be open to receive
God’s word. Our ritual action is a
kind of prayer-in-motion that says
“May God’s word open my mind, be
on my lips and in my heart.”
If you have a questions about
being Catholic but are thinking to
yourself “Dang, I should know this!”
or “Is this scandalous to even ask?” I
can guarantee there are probably at
least 50 other people asking/thinking
the same thing! All submissions will

that by starting our formation with
this weekend retreat at the absolutely
extraordinary Subiaco Benedictine
Retreat House (THE most beautiful
retreat house in our area, built on a
the highest point in Oakland County),
the teens who are coming from all
different high schools will have an
opportunity to get to know one another. There's just something about
celebrating late night Eucharist in
your slippers that makes friendships
happen! This retreat is not only key
to our Confirmation formation but
also to building community among
our young people. A truly unique
experience. So, please mark your calendars!

Save the Date! February 7-8, 2015 is our CYO
Catholic Youth Conference to be held at the Renaissance Center in Detroit. Each year, CYO puts together
a conference specifically for 9 -12 grade students that
helps to energize their faith. The conference includes 4
general sessions, 3 modules of the teen’s choosing,
Mass, a dance, and the opportunity to spend time with
1,500 other Catholic teens from the Archdiocese of Detroit. This conference is planned by high school teens to
try and meet the needs of their peers. This year’s keynote speakers are Jesse Manibussan and Steve Angrisano, two very dynamic musicians with years of experience
guiding teens in their faith. “When you feel the burning in
your soul, come to the table of the Lord. To satisfy the hunger that
you feel, look to the Lord for your Holy meal. To discover the
recipe for salvation, you must avoid temptation and feed your
faith.” Paperwork is available in the Youth Ministry Office and cost of the conference is $125.00. If you would

We’ve all experienced times of feeling lost, of feeling like we don’t quite fit in or belong with the group.
We had some awesome conversation about being lost at
Coffee House a couple of weeks ago. During our introductions, I asked the teens to tell the group about a time
they were lost – thinking literally. Many of them spoke
about times when they felt lost in a crowded room surrounded by people that care about them. They are
much deeper than I give them credit for! It was a truly
wonderful conversation about being “lost” and how we
can find our way back again.
In this week’s Gospel, we hear of a huge wedding
banquet prepared by a king. He invites all his guests,
but they are too busy to come. So, he sends his servants
out to invite everyone they meet – good and bad. In
reading this parable, I realized how much God longs for
us. God invites all people to a life full of friendship and
joy. Jesus told this parable to criticize religious leaders
of his time who rejected his message. Unfortunately for
them, they missed a feast.
This is important to remember if life isn’t a “party”
for you at times because you feel “lost”. During these
down times, keep reminding yourself that God continues to invite us to the banquet and he has a place saved
just for us. Try to keep an eye out for God’s reminders.
They might come in the form of a friend who invites
you to hang out. It could come in the Mass as you pray
with our faith community. It might come during a family gathering where you share a meal around the table.
Wherever you find warmth, welcome, love and compassion, you find God. It’s important to remember though
that the party will go on. Millions of people worldwide
have lives filled with friendship. Millions celebrate daily
as they make a difference in the world. Though you may
feel “lost” at times, know the true party is now. Don’t
miss God’s invitation.

The Theology of Paul
He has been called the founder
of the Christian theology. He has also
been thought of as the founder of the
Christian religion itself. The majority
of the books of the New Testament
are either authored by him or attributed to him. He did more to
spread the Gospel than anyone else
in the 1st century A.D. His missionary work set the foundation for
Christian theology that would influence Christians and theologians to
this day. He is Paul of Tarasus and
we will explore his fascinating
thought.

A Spirit-filled Evening for Women:
Advent by Candlelight 2014
15th
Our
annual Advent by Candlelight is quickly approaching. The event
will be held Thursday, December 4. Enjoy an evening of shared stories and
beautiful music; appetizers, desserts and candlelit conversation. What an ideal
opportunity to refresh our spirits as we enter the Advent season with a clear
focus on what is most important – making room for Christ in our sometimes
too-busy lives.
Those who wish to host a table this year should attend our annual lottery,
which will be held in the Chapel after 11:00 am Mass on Sunday, November 2.
At this time, each hostess may pick up their information packets and select a
table location (in the order names are drawn). The cost per table is $50.00.
Please bring your check, payable to Christ the Redeemer (Advent By Candlelight in the memo line), when you come to the lottery.
If you would like to attend but are new to the parish or unable to get a table of friends together, please call us. We will put you on our guest list and
find a place for you. If you have thought of hosting a table in the past but are
not sure, please give us a call. We are happy to walk you through what hosting
entails.
Please call Kris Edwards (248-797-5921) or Amy McCarty (248.421.8220)
if you are unable to attend the lottery but would like a table or with any questions you may have.

CTR volleyball Teams
Christ the Redeemer is looking
for a coordinator/liaison for our
PAVAL, Pontiac Area Vicariate Athletic League. This Coordinator will be
the contact person for our parish
teams when sign ups begin in November. The Coordinator also helps assign parishioners to teams and collect
league fees. The games are played at
Notre Dame Prep on Sunday Evenings beginning in January. Christ the
Redeemer has had as many as three
teams in years past, however we must
have a Coordinator in order for our
church to participate. The time commitment is minimal. If you are interested or have any questions, please
call Karen Swietlik in the parish office.
The Matching challenge Is Back!
A group of Christian businesswomen are challenging individuals to donate and they will match their contribution to
Love INC of North Oakland County. For every dollar you
give, they will match, up to a total of $3,000. That's right, a
dollar for dollar match. If you give Love INC $50, your $50 will be matched, so
you are really blessing Love INC with double the amount.
Last year Love INC received over $6,000 as a result of this challenge! This
matching challenge has begun and will continue until November 30. You can
give online through our website: www.loveincofnoc.org or mail your check today to Love INC of North Oakland County, PO Box 104, Lake Orion, MI

Welcome to Christ the Redeemer!!!
The Stewardship Commission has started a new ministry here at Christ the
Redeemer. We know we are a welcoming community. Now we want to show it.
We have created a “Welcome Center” in the Church vestibule. It will be staffed
before and after every Mass by volunteers eager to meet and welcome new people to our Parish, and offer assistance and information to everyone.
We are looking for an outgoing and friendly team of parishioners who are
eager to represent the best our Parish has to offer. Training will be provided.
The time commitment would be similar to the coffee and pizza ministries –
namely, be here for 15 minutes before and after Mass to set up, clean up, and
“work the crowd”.
We will offer an opportunity to sign up at the ministry weekend but if you
just have to get involved now, contact Christi Spencer in the parish office. We
are also looking for an individual to coordinate this ministry and schedule volunteers.
world mission Sunday!
World Mission Sunday is a special day on which we unite ourselves with Catholics all over the
world to pray and sacrifice for the
missionary efforts of the Church.
Our Holy Father has asked the
Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith to plan and promote this holy work of “First Evangelization”. The Society is under
the direction of the Holy Father
who together with the entire body
of Bishops remind the faithful of
their baptismal call to mission, as
they gather basic support for more
than 1,200 mission dioceses in Asia,
Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin
America.
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, from the very start of his pontificate has not ceased to remind us
that we are a truly missionary
Church and its mandate to spread
the faith has the highest priority.
World Mission Sunday gives us the
opportunity to join him in this faith
filled concern of his.
Please be generous in supporting the Pontifical Mission Society
for the Propagation of the Faith.
Envelopes are provided in
your packets or provided in the
vestibule. Additionally, our tithing
committee will donate to this collection.
