Join us on Sunday, October 19 at 5:00 pm as we take a musical journey through the history of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Community! The multimedia concert will include pictures from our years as community, and lyrics to favorite songs helping us raise the roof in celebration! The encore concert is a continuation of our celebration of 25 years as a Catholic parish (2/4/1989), and the 14th anniversary of the dedication of our House for the Church (10/21/2000). Christ the Redeemer has been supporting our area homeless since before we built this church. Each year we raise funds and build a house for Habitat and host the Hope Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac. As part of our 25th Anniversary year celebration we will continue our mission to take care of society’s most vulnerable by accepting donations to benefit the homeless. Donations of men's and women's socks, underwear, band aids, and foot powder will be accepted at the concert and the entire weekend of October 18/19. Light refreshments and socializing will take place in the Bethany Room afterward. St. Nicholas Project Update Sign up will continue after Masses through the month of October for the 2nd Annual St. Nicholas Project. Families of all ages, seniors and singles are welcome to join us for this parish wide day of outreach. All participants over the age of 18 will be required to fill out a background check unless previously completed. Please check your calendars prior to committing to participate. Mass of Remembrance On the Feast of All Souls, Sunday, November 2 at the 9:00 am Mass, we will remember the lost loved ones from this past year. Resources of consolation will be available after Mass. Page 2 Christ the Redeemer, Lake Orion It seems that at least one thing goes wrong at a wedding. Most of the time it’s not a big deal, but once in a while something major will happen. I remember a wedding when the bride had forgotten to bring her bouquet, so we waited while her brother rushed home to find it. A couple of times in my career the organist didn’t show, so I not only presided at the wedding, I also played the processional and recessional marches on the organ. I heard the story before I came to Christ the Redeemer of the time when the maid of honor took sick the day of the wedding, and the woman who had been their sponsor (couple) stepped in at the last minute. (I don’t think she wore the maid of honor’s dress.) On the wedding day it feels like the wedding is ruined, but afterward, these are the stories we love to tell. The wedding in today’s Gospel had one crisis erupting after another. First, the guests refused to come. Then the king destroyed the city (once again we will have to excuse Matthew for inserting the destruction of Jerusalem into the story). Finally, more guests came in, both the good and the bad. But there is one guest who is not wearing a wedding garment. He is bound hand and foot and thrown out into the darkness. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in comparison, wasn’t this bad. !But there is something else missing in this wedding. There isn’t a bride, and the groom doesn’t seem to be in attendance at his own wedding. While the bride is not named in the story, the father’s of the Church saw her in an unexpected place: the guests are the ones who will marry the Son.! Jack Shea spells this out more clearly.!“However, the selection that did not occur at the time of invitation occurs at the wedding feast. It seems that the guests are the bride. They were not invited to witness a wedding; they were invited to be married to the son. They were not invited to observe; they were invited to participate. The requirement is a wedding garment, an eagerness to be united to the son.” !“This wedding garment signals a readiness to understand and act on Jesus' teachings. They must make them their own. They must marry the revelation and bear children, acts of justice, compassion, and love in the world. If they do not do this and are reduced to silence, a silence of incomprehension, they cannot remain at the feast. This is a wedding only for those who want to be married.” “If a guest comes to the wedding without the intention of marrying, he or she experiences the opposite. Instead of being within the wedding feast of light, they are outside in the darkness. Instead of eating with their hands and dancing with their feet, they are bound hand and foot. Instead of laughing and singing, they weep and gnash their teeth. They not only are excluded from the community, they live in bitter regret. Their own failures torment them.”(John Shea, “On Earth as it is in Heaven.”)! This still leaves the question of the groom? Frederick Niedner suggests this unlikely character in the story. “In the traditional reading, which sees this parable as an allegory about the destruction of Jerusalem as God's punishment for the rejection of Jesus, the crucified Christ would appear among the servants whom the invited guests abused and killed. Oddly enough, given what finally happened to Jesus, the treatment he received makes him most like the man at the end of the parable, the one thrown out. In another way, however, the Christ remains absent from the story because this parable lacks its two most important characters, namely, the bride and the groom. Enter, then, the crucified and risen Christ as the groom.” (http://girardianlectionary.net/res/niedner_proper23a.htm) Fr. Joe farewell to fr. tom Fr. Tom Slowinski, a priest from Detroit, has been staying with me in the Parish House for the last 6 weeks or so. Tom completed his treatment for alcoholism at Guest House in Minnesota. Guest House is closing the Minnesota facility and returning to Lake Orion where it began in 1956. Since Guest House is located within our parish boundaries, when the Archdiocese asked if Tom could stay with me and be a part of our parish ministry during this transition, I was more than happy to welcome him to CTR. Tom expects to receive his new assignment this week; he is grateful for our hospitality and welcome. Please keep Tom in prayer as he continues his ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit. What does it mean? What is the significance of tracing little crosses on our forehead, lips and heart just before the Gospel is read at Mass? The practice of tracing the sign of the cross (right hand to forehead, heart, left and then right shoulder, sometime accompanied by the words “In the name of the Father, Son & the Holy Spirit, Amen”) is most prominent in the Roman Catholic Church (that would be us) but is also practiced in the Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Lutheran, Anglican, and Episcopalian churches. The history of the sign of the cross goes back as far as Tertullian, an early church father who lived between A.D. 160 and 220. Tertullian wrote, "In all our travels and movements, in all our coming in and going out, in putting off our shoes, at the bath, at the table, in lighting our candles, in lying down, in sitting down, in doing whatever occupies us, we mark our foreheads with the sign of the cross” Originally, it was just a small cross traced with the thumb on the forehead. We don’t really know exactly when the practice changed to the full upper-body version, but we do know that the switch had occurred by the eleventh century A.D., because A Prayer Book commissioned by King Henry instructs to "mark with the holy cross the four sides of the body.” The sign of the cross can mean many things... •It can be a statement of faith – namely, in the Trinity. When we make the sign, it’s like a mini-version of the creed. We are professing our belief in the Father, and in the Son and in the Holy Spirit, through movement. Like in our scriptures, when we pray “in God’s name” we are both recognizing God’s presence and consciously bringing ourselves into God’s presence. •It can be a renewal of baptism. When we make the sign we are saying in effect, "I have died with Christ and rose to new life." The sign reminds us that through our baptism we have been forever changed and are intimately connected to the body of Christ. We are remembering our joining and our continued membership in this body. It is a statement of our identity: We ARE the on-going incarnation, Christ’s body, alive and living in the world today. As St. Theresa of Avila says “Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours.” •The sign of the cross can also be a mark of discipleship. It says that we are a follower of Jesus. The word that the members of the early church used for the sign of the cross is the same Greek word used for the physical mark that a slave owner put on a slave, a shepherd put on a sheep and a general put on a soldier. Like a stamp of ownership. So, by signing ourselves we are saying that “I belong to God.” The three little signs of the cross traced on our forehead, lips and heart before the Gospel is read each Sunday at Mass signify our readiness or our desire to be open to receive God’s word. Our ritual action is a kind of prayer-in-motion that says “May God’s word open my mind, be on my lips and in my heart.” If you have a questions about being Catholic but are thinking to yourself “Dang, I should know this!” or “Is this scandalous to even ask?” I can guarantee there are probably at least 50 other people asking/thinking the same thing! February 7-8, 2015 is our CYO Catholic Youth Conference to be held at the Renaissance Center in Detroit. Each year, CYO puts together a conference specifically for 9 -12 grade students that helps to energize their faith. The conference includes 4 general sessions, 3 modules of the teen’s choosing, Mass, a dance, and the opportunity to spend time with 1,500 other Catholic teens from the Archdiocese of Detroit. This conference is planned by high school teens to try and meet the needs of their peers. This year’s keynote speakers are Jesse Manibussan and Steve Angrisano, two very dynamic musicians with years of experience guiding teens in their faith. “When you feel the burning in your soul, come to the table of the Lord. To satisfy the hunger that you feel, look to the Lord for your Holy meal. To discover the recipe for salvation, you must avoid temptation and feed your faith.” Paperwork is available in the Youth Ministry Office and cost of the conference is $125.00. If you would like more information on this event, please contact Lisa Andridge at [email protected] or (248) 391-4074 ext. 33. We’ve all experienced times of feeling lost, of feeling like we don’t quite fit in or belong with the group. We had some awesome conversation about being lost at Coffee House a couple of weeks ago. During our introductions, I asked the teens to tell the group about a time they were lost – thinking literally. Many of them spoke about times when they felt lost in a crowded room surrounded by people that care about them. They are much deeper than I give them credit for! It was a truly wonderful conversation about being “lost” and how we can find our way back again. In this week’s Gospel, we hear of a huge wedding banquet prepared by a king. He invites all his guests, but they are too busy to come. So, he sends his servants out to invite everyone they meet – good and bad. In reading this parable, I realized how much God longs for us. God invites all people to a life full of friendship and joy. Jesus told this parable to criticize religious leaders of his time who rejected his message. Unfortunately for them, they missed a feast. This is important to remember if life isn’t a “party” for you at times because you feel “lost”. During these down times, keep reminding yourself that God continues to invite us to the banquet and he has a place saved just for us. Try to keep an eye out for God’s reminders. They might come in the form of a friend who invites you to hang out. It could come in the Mass as you pray with our faith community. It might come during a family gathering where you share a meal around the table. Wherever you find warmth, welcome, love and compassion, you find God. It’s important to remember though that the party will go on. Millions of people worldwide have lives filled with friendship. Millions celebrate daily as they make a difference in the world. Though you may feel “lost” at times, know the true party is now. Don’t miss God’s invitation. Circle of Faith Looking for a group of spirit-led women to join for a book discussion? The majority of the books of the New Testament are either authored by him or attributed to him. He did more to spread the Gospel than anyone else in the 1st century A.D. His missionary work set the foundation for Christian theology that would influence Christians and theologians to this day. He is Paul of Tarasus and we will explore his fascinating thought. The Society is under the direction of the Holy Father who together with the entire body of Bishops remind the faithful of their baptismal call to mission, as they gather basic support for more than 1,200 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin America. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, from the very start of his pontificate has not ceased to remind us that we are a truly missionary Church and its mandate to spread the faith has the highest priority. World Mission Sunday gives us the opportunity to join him in this faith filled concern of his. Please be generous in supporting the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Envelopes are provided in your packets or provided in the vestibule. Additionally, our tithing committee will donate to this collection.
