Adopt A Family For
Christmas
Halloween decorations are put
away, and thoughts of Thanksgiving,
followed by the Christmas season are
rapidly taking their place. If your
family
has struggled with the
“gimmes” and is interested in shifting the emphasis to “giving,” the
Adopt a Family program might be
just what you need. Every year, families from Christ the Redeemer parish “adopt” between 22 and 25 families – providing gifts and food for
those in need from our local Lake
Orion community parish and schools
and the families of incarcerated persons recommended by Oakland
County Jail Ministry.
You determine the number of people you are
able to “adopt” - and we provide you
with information about needs, sizes,
wishes, etc. Gifts will be due back
by the weekend of December 14, so
there's plenty of time to shop for just
the right gifts for a struggling family.

Coming Soon! Just Shopping
The weekend of November 22/23, you will have an opportunity to buy
once, give twice! Just Shopping, our free trade bazaar, will bring many gift items
crafted by artisans from Detroit to Zimbabwe right to Bethany after the Masses.
The sale provides a fair market for the artisans, allowing them to feed and educate their families from the work of their hands.
Featured this year: On The Rise Bakery. Sponsored by the Capuchin Soup
Kitchen, this unique venture is run by members of ROPE (Reaching Our Potential Everyday). ROPE members have recently been released from prison or have
completed substance abuse programs and truly desire to change their lives. With
each purchase of their delicious breads, you make possible supportive housing,
training and counseling services, educational opportunities and self help programs. More about other suppliers to Just Shopping next week.
We need help to set up and sell the weekend of November 22/23. Please
call Sue Donovan at 248-393-1297 or [email protected] to volunteer. Join
us at our next Peace and Justice meeting, Wednesday, November 12 at 7:00 pm
in the Michael Room, next to Bethany.
St. Nicholas Update
Thank you to all those who have volunteered for our St. Nicholas Project.
If you are unable to help the day of project, December 6, we have several
other volunteer opportunities available.
Flyer distribution: Over 2000 flyers need to be distributed to area neighborhoods between November 22 and December 1. Many volunteers are needed
for this job in order to ensure a successful drive which benefits area food pantries. Routes will be handed out in batches of 100 houses. If you, or your family
can help with this task, please sign up on the designated sheets in the vestibule.
Flyers will be available following all Masses the weekend of November 15/16
and 22/23. You and your family will receive an email with instructions.
Christmas cookies are the featured dessert for our celebration dinner December 6 following the 5:00 pm Mass. Some of our families will also pass out
cookies as they Christmas Carol at area nursing and assisted living facilities. We
need over 600 cookies in total for the St. Nicholas Project. Cookies may be
home made or store bought and can be delivered to church beginning Friday,
December 5 or on the 6. Please sign up in the vestibule.
Volunteers are also needed to help with hospitality for the pizza dinner
following Mass on December 6. If you can help serve or clean up between 5:009:00 pm, please see the sign up in the vestibule.

In the very
first line of his
first public address, the newly
elected
Pope
Francis said the
following: "You all know that the
duty of the Conclave was to give a
bishop to Rome." These carefully
spoken words reaffirm what many
Catholics have forgotten: The pope is
special because of the Church he presides over; not the universal Church,
but the Church of Rome. As if to
respond to any confusion caused by
his words, Francis went on to say the
following: "And now let us begin this
journey, the Bishop and people, this
journey of the Church of Rome,
which presides in charity over all the
Churches, a journey of brotherhood
in love, of mutual trust." For Francis,
in order to fulfill his role as pope, he
must first seek to be a bishop to his
local church. The central importance
of the relationship between a bishop
and his local church is what gives Catholicism its unique form of unity
that we call catholicity.
Today we celebrate the feast of
the Dedication of the Basilica of St.
John Lateran in Rome. It is known as
“Mother and head of all churches on
earth” because it was the original residence of the Pope. To this day, the
Pope is the Pastor/Bishop of that
Church.
The basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine at the beginning of
the fourth century AD and was dedicated on November 9, 324, by Pope
Sylvester I. The anniversary of the
dedication of this church has been
observed since the 12th century.
The magnificent church was first
called the Basilica of the Savior but
later was also dedicated to St. John
the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, and so it acquired the name of
the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
When the papacy was transferred to
Avignon for about a century, the
condition of the Lateran deteriorated
so greatly that when the Pope returned to Rome he lived in two other
locations before finally settling adja-
cent to St. Peter’s Basilica, where he
lives now.
Richard Gaillardetz explains
that “it is the bishop's relationship
to his local church that gives full
meaning to his relationship with his
brother bishops in the episcopal
college. When bishops gather together with other bishops, they
bring the unique gifts, wisdom, and
pastoral concerns of their local
church with them. Consequently, in
their episcopal gatherings, they
manifest not only their collegial
relationship with one another; they
also manifest the communion that
exists among all their churches.
'What then results in these collegial
interactions among bishops is a
kind of ecclesial "gift exchange."
Each bishop offers the gifts from
his own church to the communion
of churches. In this way episcopal
collegiality is put in service of tile
Church's catholicity.
We saw this dynamism at work
at the Second Vatican Council and
again at the recent Extraordinary
Synod. When the bishops were
gathered in council session, they
often found themselves sitting next
to a bishop from another continent.
They shared meals with bishops
whose experience of the Church
was quite different from their own.
Their sense of the Church's catholicity was expanded dramatically by
their exposure to the council's episcopal ‘gift exchange.’”
Where does the ministry of the
pope fit into this schema? The late
Bishop Ken Untener gave this description.
“People generally tend to think
that all apostolic authority resides
exclusively in the pope, who then
delegates it to other bishops. The
truth of the matter is that apostolic
authority rests in the entire college
of bishops in union with the Holy
Father. Neither the pope, nor an
individual bishop, nor a group of
bishops could claim to possess the
fullness of apostolic authority apart
from the entire college of bishops.
One way to appreciate this
teaching is to think of the original
apostolic college. What was the
source of their apostolic authority?
Did it come from Peter, or did it
come from the Lord? Did it reside in
one of them, or did it reside in the
entire body as a college? Clearly, it
came from the Lord, and it rested in
all of them as a college. Peter had a
special unifying role. He was the rock
of unity; he was called upon to
strengthen his brothers, but he was
not the source of their authority. The
same is true of the college of bishops
today, and of the role of the vicar of
Peter.”

Giving tree
Many of you may have noticed
the Giving Tree tags in the vestibule
this past weekend. A little early according to the calendar, however, the
gifts will be delivered on Saturday,
December 6 as one of the outreach
projects for our St. Nicholas Day Project. This is one week earlier than
previous years. Please return the unwrapped gift with the tag on or before
Sunday, November 30.
We provide gifts of warm clothing and toys to Children’s Village, St.
Dominic’s Outreach in Detroit, and
Lighthouse of Clarkston. Some of
the tags may include a pantry
item. This provides emergency food
for two of the agencies enabling them
to stock their pantries over the holidays and into next
year. Thank you for
helping us with gifts
and food for those
in greatest need.
Please call Susan
Arends with any

Crazy Catholic Question #9
Do you have many questions submitted each week that you choose
from?
Nope. In fact nobody submitted a
question for me this week, so with all
the discussion about resurrection lately
in our scripture readings and our recent
celebrations of All Saints Day and All
Souls Day, I thought this little parable
(one of my favorites) might be a meaningful submission for this week’s column. It presents an interesting twist
to ponder…
Once upon a time, a set of twins
were conceived in the same womb.
Weeks passed, and the twins developed. As their awareness grew, they
laughed for joy, “Isn’t it great that we
were conceived? Isn’t it great to be
alive?” Together the twins explored
their world. When they found their
mother’s cord that gave them life they
sang for joy, “How great is our mother’s love that she shares her own life
with us.”
As the weeks stretched into
months the twins noticed how much
each was changing. “What does this
mean?” asked the one. “It means that
our stay in this world is drawing to an
end,” said the other. “But I don’t want
to go,” said the one. “I want to stay
here always.” “We have no choice,”
said the other, “but maybe there is life
after birth!” “But how can it be?” responded the one. “Don’t we shed our
life cord? How is life possible without
it? Besides, we have seen evidence that
others were here before us and none of
them have returned to tell us that there
is life after birth.”
And so the one fell into deep
despair saying, “If conception ends
with birth, what is the purpose of life
in the womb? It is meaningless! Maybe there is no mother at all.”
“But there has to be,” protested
the other. “How else did we get
here? How do we remain alive?”
“Have you ever seen our mother?”
said the one. “Maybe she lives in our
minds. Maybe we made her up because the idea made us feel good.”
Thus, while one raved and despaired,
the other resigned himself to birth.
He placed his hands in the trust of
the mother.
Hours passed into days and days
fell into weeks, and it came
time….both knew that their birth
was at hand and both feared what
they did not know.
And as the one was the first to
be conceived, so he was the first to
be born. The other followed after.
They cried as they were born into
the light. They coughed up fluid, and
they gasped the dry air; and when
they were sure that they had been
born, they opened their eyes and
they found themselves cradled in the
warm love of the mother. They lay
open-mouthed, awestruck at the
beauty of the mother that they never
could have imagined.”

John 2:13-22
In this week’s reading we hear of Jesus going to the
temple and driving out the money changers. It is one of
the few times we see Jesus truly angry. What is it that
causes this response? We tend to think of Jesus as full of
love and compassion, but something has brought a very
human reaction. Jesus is all about love; his love for his
Father and his people. I think that it’s out of love that
he responds so strongly.
The Temple was a place of worship, much like
Christ the Redeemer is for us today. Here Jesus comes
to join in the celebration of Passover and he finds people
cheating each other and treating not only the building,
but one another, with great disrespect. For the One who
is all about love, this must have been terrible to witness.
I sometimes wonder if the way in which we treat one
another, we bring God to this level of frustration and
disappointment. God’s command is simple – love one
another, but in the Temple, he is not seeing that love.
Last week in Coffee House, we spent some time
talking about the masks that we wear. Some masks we
put on ourselves and others are put upon us by our
peers. Why? One response from the teens was that
some masks cover up the anger they sometimes feel. It’s
their way of responding appropriately in school or at
home. They recognize that they can’t just lash out in
anger any time they are offended or hurt. But, are there
times when anger is appropriate? Can it be constructive?
I believe there are times when anger can bring about
positive change. Each year on the night before Halloween, Devil’s Night, members of the police and fire departments, along with private citizens gather to patrol in
the city of Detroit to discourage random acts of violence.
It took people getting angry at the destruction of life and
property to take action and protect the city. It was due
to the outrage by one woman of the living conditions of
a poor child in New York in 1874 that child protective
laws came into being. Farm animals were sometimes
treated cruelly until an advocate became angry enough to
speak up and the ASPCA was born. There are cases
throughout history where anger has led to positive action, born out of love.
We will spend time in the coming weeks looking at
what this means and how we can channel anger in a positive way. Jesus set the example for us in the Temple.
He recognized the wrong that was being done and because his love for his people is so great, he responded in
anger and put a halt to the activity there.
In what ways have you seen anger reap positive results? When have you been so angry at wrongdoing that
you were moved to action?
Rainbow XXXIII – “Feed Your Faith”
Save the Date! February 7-8, 2015 is our CYO Catholic Youth Conference held at the Renaissance
Center in Detroit. Each year, CYO puts together
a conference specifically for 9th -12th grade students
that helps to energize their faith. The conference
includes 4 general sessions, 3 modules of the teen’s
choosing, Mass, a dance, and the opportunity to
spend time with 1,500 other Catholic teens from
the Archdiocese of Detroit. This conference is
planned by high school teens to try and meet the needs
of their peers. This year’s keynote speakers are Jesse
Manibussan and Steve Angrisano, two very dynamic musicians with years of experience guiding teens in
their faith. “When you feel the burning in your soul,
come to the table of the Lord. To satisfy the hunger that
you feel, look to the Lord for your Holy meal. To discover
the recipe for salvation, you must avoid temptation and
feed your faith.” Paperwork is available in the
Youth Ministry Office and cost of the conference
is $125.00. If you would like more information
on this event, please contact Lisa Andridge at [email protected] or (248) 391-4074 ext. 33.

Gospel of life
“I am the resurrection and the life:
whoever believes in me, though he should die,
will come to life.” (John 11: 25-26)
November is a month traditionally dedicated to remembering ancestors and loved ones who have died.
Last Sunday at the Cathedral of the
Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit,
Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron celebrated a moving remembrance of all
those who have died in a special
Feast of All Souls liturgy, featuring
music from French composer Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem.” The music,
far from being a distraction to the
liturgical celebration, served to heighten and illuminate the impact of the
Mass.
The “Requiem” Mass texts,
though ancient, continue as living
expressions of consolation for the
present and hope for the future. The
prayers and music for this special liturgy were filled with images of eternal
rest and perpetual light, and asked
more of those who listened than mere
reflection on past losses. They encouraged all to bring to the present
those they have loved and known; to
acknowledge their continuing presence in their lives; to pray for them
not in the past tense, but in the present and future tenses.
We pray with our Archbishop
that through the Eucharist we are
open to the Father’s will and love,
and that we prayerfully return that
love to God and our neighbor in the
same measure.

The Emergence of Christian
Doctrine and Dogma
In the centuries following the
death and resurrection of Jesus there
where competing groups claiming
they were the true followers of Jesus.
The ancient Church viewed this as a
problem that had to be addressed. In
response the Church needed to develop means to demonstrate that it
was the true repository of the Gospel

“doctrine” “heresy” are distinctively
Christian in origin and if the Church
