In the case of Ballroom Dancing, we are talking about the connections within an individual dancer and the connections within a partnership. At the higher levels of Ballroom Dancing these two types of connections evolve into a Ballroom "Singularity" which prevails as the sole dance entity. Ballroom Dancers generally start off as individuals then evolve into a partnership. Before the individuals can become a partnership, all kinds of evolution has to go on within the individual dancer. The evolution begins at the feet and works its way up through the body. The feet learn footwork, etc., the legs learn movement, etc., the hip area (core) learns Latin/Cuban motion, power, etc., the upper body learns frame, relative position, etc., and the head learns counter balance, direction, etc. combine all of these elements into a single feeling? Ballroom Dance Isometrics is the answer. How do Ballroom Isometrics work? Stand up and hold your arms up in a Ballroom dance frame (no partner). Drop your right arm down to your side. Be aware of how your left arm feels. Now, repeat with the right arm up and the left arm down. Again be aware of how it feels. This time hold both arms up and check the feeling. When both arms are up at the same time in dance position, you will feel a connection between your arms through the shoulders. The two arms As the evolution continues, the indi- have an Isometric connection natuvidual dancer tries to incorporate all rally. The dance frame now has a of these various individual elements. single feeling. With both arms down, lift the chin and rotate the head The problem is that the dancer's slightly to the left. Now lift the arms mind tries to do one thing, then the next, then the next, etc. As a result, up into dance position. You will feel the head position become part of the the dancer executes one element, frame and still it is a single feeling (a then another and another. The goal new single feeling). Now concute (dance) that single feeling. Instead of trying to execute five differ- nect all of these elements to the core of the individual dancer. All the ent elements, a single physical feeling is executed. How is it possible to physical parts of the individual can be connected in this manner. The goal is to have a single feeling for the whole individual dancer. We have looked at the individual dancer's Isometric connections. Now let's look at the partnership's Isometric connections. The object is to combine two individual dancers together to create a single entity (a partnership, eventually a "Singularity"). This again is accomplished through Ballroom Isometrics. Let's take the elements in the above physical exercise for the individual dancer and adapt them to a dance partnership using Isometrics. Create the dance frame as described above except this time with a partner. Notice that there is a natural Isometric connection to the partner. The frame connection now feels like an oval that includes the partner's frame. You don't have to do anything except be aware that it exists. Now be aware that the head position described above feels connected and directly opposite of the partner's head. Both heads can be connected by Isometrics to the oval partnership frame. Just as described above, connect the balls of the feet of both partners to the oval head-frame. Now, connect all of these elements to the core of the partnership. Notice that the core is not within either individual dancer. The single core is within the center of the partnership. Again the goal is to have a single feeling for the whole partnership. Partnership Isometrics don't work unless both partners are participating. The goal is get the whole body, then the whole partnership involved in the movement of the Ballroom entity. Isometrics combined with Logical or Invisible connections allow the partnership to evolve into a true "Singularity". Page 4 Tri-City Dance Ballroom Dance Step Speed and Feeling Ron Kellen Typically dancers (particularity men) try to make each step of a specific dance feel the same. Almost every step in a dance element is different. Each step usually has a different speed and a different feel. The character (specific feeling) of the dance is lost when each "step" is executed with the same robotic feeling. step, the step still needs to consume 2/3s of a second. From the dancer's perspective, the 2nd step feels faster than the 1st because the 2nd step travels a longer distance in the same amount of time. The dancer's 3rd step feels very slow compared to the 1st step because there is almost no travel, but it still has to consume the same amount of time Let's logically look at the front half of a (2/3s of a second). The Box doesn't feel Waltz Box from the leader's point of like 3 even steps 1, 2, 3. It feel like the view. The musical timing of the Waltz is 1st step forward is at normal speed, step "1, 2, 3" (3/4 time). Let's assume that the 2 is faster than the 1st step and the 3rd speed of the music is 30 MPM (measures step feels slow compared to the 1st step per minute). This means that a measure (normal, quick, slow). The steps need to of music would consume 2 seconds With move faster or slower depending on the 3 steps in each measure, a single step distance of the movement and at the would consume 2/3 of a second (don't get same time consume 2/3s of a second. too hung up on the math). From the This gives the Box a very different leader's geometric perspective, the 1st feeling compared to the even 1, 2, 3 step in the Box is "forward". The 2nd movement. step is "diagonally forward and to the side" and the 3rd step is "in-place" (a The first step forward in the Box is a "step" is defined as a complete weight "heel" power step. Let's compare the These three steps have different actions length of the 2nd and 3rd steps to the 1st as well as varying speeds. Each of the step. The 1st step is a simple "forward" three steps has its own unique feeling. step. The 2nd step is longer than the 1st The Waltz Box now has its own because it moves "diagonally forward personality and it is not the old and to the side". The 3rd step basically monotonous even 1, 2, 3. has no length at all because it is an "inplace" step. No matter the size of the Now let's take a look at the forward element of a Samba Basic Pattern (from the leader's point of view). The musical timing of Samba is "1, AH, 2" (2/4 time). In this example, the "1" step is a whole beat, the "AH" step is 1/8th of a beat and the "2" step is 7/8th of a beat for a total of 2 beats. The "1" step in the Basic is "Forward". The "AH" step is "Together" and the "2" step is "In-Place". Just as above, let's compare the length of the "AH" step and the 2 step to the "1" step. The "1" step is a forward Latin step consuming one whole beat. The "AH" step ("Together") travels the same distance but in only 1/8th of a beat. This feels "Fast" compared to the "1" step. The "2"step ("In-Place") doesn't travel at all but is almost one whole beat (7/8th) in duration. This makes the "2" step feel "Slow" compared to the "1" step (normal, very fast, almost normal). Dancing the correct rhythm to Samba actually seems to slow it down because you are matching the music. The point of this article is to make the dancer aware of the different foot speeds, the different actions of each movement and the unique feeling of each dance. I always tell my students: "If a deaf person were to watch you dance, he/she should be able to tell what dance you are dancing just by your movement".
