Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon Weekend
October 18 through 19

The Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon Weekend returns to the Grand Strand with events to be held
October 18 - 19. The Mini Marathon itself is Sunday, October 19, with 5,000 runners, not counting
family and friends. The weekend events include a two-day Health and Fitness Expo, a Coastal 5K, a
one-mile Doggie Dash, and the 13.1 mile Mini Marathon. Visit http://www.runmyrtlebeach.com. The
mini-marathon begins at 7:00 a.m., Sunday, October 19, at Coastal Grand Mall and finishes by 12:00
p.m. on the Boardwalk at Ninth Avenue North. With construction on Ocean Boulevard and the
boardwalk, the route for the Mini Marathon on Sunday, October 19, will change slightly. An
updated course map, with expected times when intersections along the route are likely to be closed,
is available on-line at www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/minimarathonmap.pdf. Remember that US 17
(the “bypass”) is not involved in Sunday’s half-marathon route.
Employee Lunchtime Cook-Off

City departments are challenged to an Employee Lunchtime Cook-Off on Friday, October 24,
at Myrtle’s Market, and you’re invited! Departments are invited to send a three-person team to
prepare lunch for judging and tasting, as a fun fund-raising event for the American Heart Association.
Teams will provide all cooking equipment and must use at least one item from a Myrtle’s Market
vendor. Starting at 9:00 a.m., teams have three hours to prepare their lunch entrées. Tasting and
judging are open to the public for a $3.00 donation to the American Heart Association, so
come enjoy lunch with us at Myrtle’s Market on Friday, October 24. See you there!
Annual “Walk for the Animals” Festival

Join the Grand Strand Humane Society for the Annual “Walk for the Animals Festival” from
1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 26, at a new location! The event will be held for the first time
at Valor Memorial Garden in The Market Common. Enjoy pet-related contests, games and a parade!
Some of the Humane Society’s dogs will be showcased and available for adoption. For more

The Halloween season is in full swing with “Fright Nights” every Friday and Saturday evening,
through November 1, at Plyler Park and on Ocean Boo-levard! Haunted house tours, the Zombie
Quarantine Zone and live music are just a few of the treats from the Oceanfront Merchants
Association. Friday night “Zombie Elvis” performances will be in Plyler Park from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m.
every Friday in October. In addition, the “Howl-at-the-Moon” Concert Series and “Blue Moon Beer
Garden” occur from 6:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m., Saturdays, October 18 and 25, and Friday, October
31. Stroll along Ocean Boo-levard and the Boardwalk for face painting, caricatures and pumpkin

Futrell Park Tree Planting for “Neighborwoods Month”

Myrtle Beach will celebrate “Neighborwoods Month” with a tree planting day in Futrell Park
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 30. More than 40 trees will be planted, thanks to a
$12,100 grant from the Alliance for Trees and the TD Bank tree planting program. The tree planting
demonstration begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants will learn how to plant the right tree in the right place,
how to plant trees properly and how to maintain them. Everyone is invited to join in on the tree
planting. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and pick up your t-shirts at registration. People wanting to
participate in the TD Tree Planting Days need to go on-line and register as a volunteer. To be a

Myrtle Beach Small Business Vendor Outreach Session

The City of Myrtle Beach will host a Small Business Vendor Outreach Session to help local
small businesses offer their supplies and services to the city. The event is set for 9:00 – 11:00
a.m., Thursday, October 30, at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot, 851 Broadway Street. It’s a chance to
introduce your company to the Purchasing Division and learn how to submit bids. The session is
free, but pre-registration is encouraged. Small businesses wishing to become city vendors may sign
up by sending a request to [email protected] or by regular mail to the Purchasing
Division at P.O. Box 2468, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578. The Purchasing Division’s physical address is

Fall 2014 Veterans Awareness Series (VAS)

meeting room. Veterans may sign-up for a library card and receive a free one-year membership to
Friends of Chapin Memorial Library. Learn about the library’s “America’s White Table” tribute and

Enjoy the works of well-known local artist Dixie Dugan in this retrospective show at the
Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, through December 28. This exhibit
features 65 works created over the past forty years. They include Dugan’s first finger painting, at the
age of six, and pastel figure studies completed during her formal schooling; as well as many of her
distinctive watercolors of Low country scenes and more recent origami paper collages. Gallery hours

Shadow of the Turning: the Art of Binh Pho

Enjoy an exciting new body of work by Binh Pho, blending mythic worlds of fairy tale, fantasy,
adventure and science fiction, titled “Shadow of the Turning: The Art of Binh Pho,” on display
through January 4. The 45 works in “Shadow of the Turning” focus on art, philosophy and
storytelling, yet is an entirely fictional story. The story is “illustrated” through Pho’s sculptures
combining woodturning, art glass, and painting. Each work is a complex creation of delicate shapes
and textures and intense colors. Many open or turn to reveal a secret interior space or objects within,
creating a sense of mystery in each object. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday and

geography, sports, television, history and movies. After the question, teams choose and submit an
answer before the allotted time period ends. The correct answer scores points, with prizes awarded
