own. We became very attached to the
little sweeties as part of our family. A
year later, we have so many cats and
kittens! HELP!! How did this happen?”
“I found some kittens beside the
road, I found kittens, kittens, kittens,
kittens, kittens…. Can you take
them?” Aaahhhhhh!!!! The Cat’s
Meow Adoption Program, as well as
all the other organizations in the area,
become overwhelmed during “kitten
season” (spring through fall). Can
you understand how hard it is for
those who truly love these furry
felines to take these calls every day?
The Cat’s Meow can take kittens
for adoption, but we are a hospital.
Our goal is to spay and neuter as
many as we can! With only one adoption cage in our lobby, we more times
than we would like, have to say no.
Saying No is the hardest thing to do.
You then worry what will happen to
those cats/kittens you don’t have
space for.
When I hear comments like “They
are not my responsibility”, I begin to
wonder. If you have been feeding a
cat for months, does that not make
you its care taker? It depends on you
to survive! You have already taken
responsibility for it. I know people are
trying to help out of the goodness of
their hearts, and many may be working with limited funds.
Cat’s Meow Veterinary Hospital is
here to help! First, we would like to
educate people on the consequences
of failing to spay and neuter the
strays they feed. “How did this happen to me?” HELLO!!! If you do not
spay and neuter these cats, they will
multiple. It is nature in full action.
The feline reproduction statistics are
staggering! A female cat can become
pregnant as young as 5 months of
age. We have babies having babies!
Let’s say we have 2 uncontrolled
breeding cats. A female can produce 2
to 3 litters a year with an average of 4
kittens per litter. If only 3 cats continue the breeding cycles you would
have approximately 12 new kittens in
one year. Then by the second year,
those kittens and their kittens will
have around 66 offspring. By the third
year the numbers could reach over
2,000! Any way, you do the math, the
population can soon be out of control!
Oh wait! Let’s not forget all the
other reasons for population overload. What about all the myths and
mistakes? “I want my cat to have just
one litter before we spay her. It will
make her a sweeter cat.” “There is no
reason to spend the money on spaying my cat. She will never go outside.” “I didn’t think he was old
enough to be neutered yet. Someone
told me that you needed to wait until
they were a year old.” “My cat will
get fat if we get it fixed.” ETC ETC!
Cats will actually be healthier after
being altered. For one example,
females run a higher risk of ovarian
and mammary cancers if not spayed.
An unaltered male cat is very territorial and will mark his territory with
urine and fight other males. Bite
wounds will often result in the spread
of the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
(FIV). Cats can also spread the Feline
Leukemia Virus (FELV) to each other
in several ways.

will always recommend testing for
these viruses before you take in a
stray, especially if you already have
cats. There are many things to consider if a cat tests positive to one of these
viruses. The veterinarians can help
you make the right decisions for your
situation.
As for your cat getting fat - one of
the main reasons our cats gain weight
after being altered is simply lack of
exercise. There are some hormonal
changes, but basically, they are not
much different than we are as we age.
You must use all of the calories you
take in or they turn to fat. Most of us
over feed our cats. In nature, they
have to work for a meal. Cat food
manufacturers are aware of the many
different nutritional needs of our cats
and have formulated diets accordingly.
Secondly, and most importantly,
Cat’s Meow has Spay/Neuter clinics
4 days a week by working with all of
your local non-profit cat rescue organizations. They have different packages
to help everyone. We do more spays
and neuters in a day than most hospitals do in a week. Keep in mind that
Cat’s Meow is not a “non-profit”
organization with large donations and
fund raisers, or a federally funded
project like the shelters. We do this
out of our love for cats.
Any monetary donations would be
greatly appreciated. We would like to
be able to help those people that may
not be able to afford the costs of altering all the cats they have been feed-

ing. We have been collecting aluminum and tin cans to help raise
funds for years now. Feel free to drop
cans (especially soda/beer cans) at
Cat’s Meow. Please remove labels and
rinse cans before bagging. It takes a
lot of cans, but every little bit helps. If
you are able to crush the cans, we can
take a larger amount, which makes
the trip more worthwhile to the recycle station.
Lastly, we would like to thank
those of you already helping by
donating your time and money help-
ing those in need to spay and neuter
their cats. We so appreciate the food
and litter donated for the kittens we
find homes for. With everyone’s combined efforts, one day we may be able
to cut down on the number of cats
being euthanized every day in shelters.

Cheesecake Crescent Rolls
2 cans of Pillsbury Crescent rolls
2 8oz packages cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup butter, melted
Cinnamon
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
Spread one of the cans of crescent
rolls on the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking dish.
Combine softened cream cheese, 1
cup sugar, and vanilla. Spread over
crescent roll layer. Unroll and layer
remaining crescent rolls over cream
cheese layer. Melt your butter and
spread over top of crescent rolls.
Sprinkle with cinnamon and
sugar. Bake for 20-30 minutes in
350F oven until bubbly and slightly
browned.
You can also drizzle with honey if
you like.

Practical Tips for
Special Needs Planning

Those who are caregivers for special
needs children or other
family members are
often so busy trying to
take care of day to day
needs that it can be
difficult to find time to
address the ever-present worry of “what
will happen to my
loved one when I am
gone?”.
Below are some quick tips for what to consider when planning for the future. I am also available to visit families in their homes to assist with
planning needs. There is no extra cost for house
calls that are within a reasonable distance from
my office near Market Common. I also provide
referrals to community resources that can help
relieve some of your burden.
Tip #1: The importance of planning. You
know this already and it likely keeps you up at
night, but there is no guarantee of public benefits
such as Supplemental Security Income and
Medicaid being available at reasonable rates for
the full life of your family member. Fiscal pressures can cause state and local governments to
shortsightedly cut back on resources for people
with disabilities. However, you may be relieve to
learn that even if you have a very modest
income and resources, you can still plan ahead
by paying into a life insurance policy that can
fund a trust to care for your child after you are
gone.
Tip #2: Don’t disinherit the special needs
family member. Well-intentioned people may
recommend to you that you disinherit a special
needs family member in order to protect their
access to public benefits that pay for food, shelter, and medical care. But these benefits rarely
provide for more than basic needs, and your disabled family member is often more in need of
resources than anyone else in your family. Your
family member can safely inherit without losing
benefits if you include a special needs trust in
your will. This is safer than simply leaving funds
to another family member, such as a sibling, who
will then be responsible for providing care,
because if a caregiver becomes incapacitated or
passes a way a trust ensures there will still be a
structure in place to allow for the safety and
well-being of your family member.
A special needs trust basically creates a bank
account to exist after you pass away, and names
a person called a trustee who will be responsible
for paying for bills and extras for your loved
one. The trust provides detailed instructions for
how the money should be spent.
Tip #3: Don’t rely on siblings to use their
money for the benefit of a special needs family
member. Many families rely on their other children to provide, from their own inheritances, for
a child with special needs. This is not a solution
that will protect a child with special needs after
the death of the parents or when siblings have
their own expenses and financial priorities.
For example, what if an inheriting sibling
divorces or loses a lawsuit? His or her spouse (or
a judgment creditor) may be entitled to half of it
and will likely not care for the child with special
needs. What if the sibling dies or becomes incapacitated while the child with special needs is
still living? Will his or her heirs care for the child
with special needs as thoughtfully and completely as the sibling did?
Siblings of a child with special needs often feel
a great responsibility for that child and have felt
so all of their lives. When parents provide clear
instructions and a helpful structure through a
special needs trust, they lessen the burden on all
their children and support a loving and involved
relationship among them.
Tip #4: How a special needs trust can help. A
properly drafted special needs trust will preserve
eligibility for essential government benefits while
also providing for the comfort and well-being of
your family member. Medical expenses not covered by insurance, training and education, special equipment and payment for maintenance of
equipment, transportation, cell phones, computers, televisions, vacations and other extras can be
provided for through a special needs trust.
Again, if you are of modest means this trust can
be funded through a life insurance policy. You
can also ask friends and family members to leave
money to this trust in their own wills.
Tip #5: A special needs trust can be customized. A special needs trust needn’t be one
size fits all but can instead be customized to your
loved one’s needs and desires. You can allow for
certain expenditures and restrict others. You can
choose one or two people who will consult with
the trustee to make sure your loved one is receiving excellent care, and you can build in options
for how to replace a trustee if they are not fulfilling their role appropriately. You can name a
social worker who can be part of the care team.
Tip #6: This is a complex area of the law. It’s
important to have an attorney who is experienced in this area of the law to ensure that a trust
created from your own funds doesn’t not unnecessarily “pay back” Medicaid when you pass
away. Generally, only trusts that are funded with
money that belongs to the special needs person
require this Medicaid pay back provision.
Likewise, the rules applicable to special needs
trusts and planning are constantly changing. For
example, the Affordable Care Act now makes
private health insurance an option for people
with special needs. However, private insurance
will still not cover the costs of long-term care
and other services or equipment necessary for a
loved one with special needs. Thus, even if the
family chooses private insurance, the special
needs beneficiary may still require Medicaid eligibility, necessitating a special needs trust.
The new ABLE Act now allows for special
needs individuals to finally have their own savings account, which is a very valuable tool but
due to the amount that can be saved being
“capped” is one more tool in the toolkit, but not
a replacement for the lifetime security a trust can
provide.

Long-Term Care Insurance:
What You Should Know
The median age of the United States population is
at an all–time high. Adults over the age of 65 have
surpassed the number of teenagers, and people in their
50s and 60s can expect to live longer than previous
generations. As life expectancy continues to rise in the
U.S., more and more Americans between the ages of
40 and 84, especially those in their mid-50s, are
preparing for their golden years by purchasing
long–term care insurance.
What is Long–term Care?
Long–term care refers to a wide range of medical, personal and social services. This care may
include help with daily activities, as well as
home health care, adult daycare, nursing home
care or care in a group living facility.
Long–term care insurance is one way to pay for
long–term care. It is designed to cover all or
some of the services provided by long–term care.
When will benefits be available?
Long–term care policies have an elimination
period, which is the number of days you must
need nursing home care or home health care
before your policy pays benefits. A shorter elimination period will mean you pay a higher premium. A long–term care policy does not guarantee
coverage unless you satisfy certain requirements.
For example, most policies require that you be
unable to perform a given number of daily living
activities, such as dressing, bathing and eating
without assistance
How much in benefits will the policy pay?
The benefit amount usually is a daily benefit
ranging from $50 to $250 per day. You may
choose a benefit period that is a specific number
of days, months or years. A maximum benefit
period may range from one year to the remainder of your lifetime.
Are there exclusions?
Every policy has an exclusion section. Some
states do not allow certain exclusions. Many
long–term care policies exclude coverage for the
following:
• Mental and nervous disorders or diseases
(except organic brain disorders)
• Alcoholism and drug addiction
• Illnesses caused by an act of war
• Treatment already paid for by the government
• Attempted suicide or self-inflicted injury
Considerations before buying long–term care
insurance
Whether you should buy long–term care insurance depends on age and life expectancy, gender,
family situation, health status, income and assets.
Do you qualify for Medicaid?
As an older adult, you may qualify for
Medicaid, which pays almost half of the nation’s
long–term care bills. To qualify for Medicaid,
your monthly income must be less than the federal poverty level, and your assets cannot exceed
certain limits. Some states have long–term care
insurance programs designed to help people
with the financial impact of spending down to
meet Medicaid eligibility standards.
Key points to remember
• Long–term care insurance policies cover a
wide range of medical, personal and social services.

Key Components OF
An Estate Plan

Whether you are young or elderly, rich or middle class, married or single, you likely own something of value. It may only be valuable to you or it
may also be valuable to others. It may be your
home, a car or boat, a bank account, some stocks
or bonds, a house full of furniture and knick

decisions by executing an advance medical directive; the third key component of an estate plan.
Let’s assume you die and never execute a last will and testament. Then,
subject to some limited exceptions, your property will generally pass at
your death according to the laws of the state where you die. The persons
who receive your property are referred to as your “heirs”. Most states’ laws
set forth a list of “heirs” who take in a certain order of priority; heirs of the
same degree or familial relationship usually take equal shares of your property. By executing a last will and testament, you choose who receives your
property at your death and how much they receive. Otherwise, state law
controls who gets what you own and how much.
Most married people want their spouse to
receive all of their property at their death. If you
die without a will and have a spouse but also
have one or more children, your spouse will not
receive all your property; he or she will share
your property with your children. So, your
spouse could end up owning your home with
his or her children or with your children, that is,
with your spouse’s stepchildren. In either case, it
may not be an ideal situation and may not be
what you want. Ownership of your home by
your spouse together with your children (or
your spouse’s stepchildren) often causes a whole
host of problems, some of which can easily be

the probate process easier after your death. It allows someone to step up
and take charge of your affairs, the person you select and name in your will
as your executor (now most often called your personal representative). That
person can very quickly be appointed by the local probate court and once
appointed, have the authority to handle all of your affairs. With a welldrafted will, they will have more authority to act and do what is necessary
than if you die without a will. Your will gives them added powers that
state law only gives them through petitioning the court for authority, a time
and expense that slows down the process and often leads to disputes and
disagreements. In addition, without a will, state law controls who can be
appointed by the court to handle and manage your affairs. With a will, you
select who will be in charge. These are just a few of the important reasons
to have this key component of a good estate plan, a last will and testament.
The second key component of an estate plan, a durable power of attorney, is just as important as the first. A power of attorney is a legal document whereby a person (referred to as the “principal”) appoints another
person (referred to as their “agent” or “attorney-in-fact”) to do and perform
certain things for the principal. Without a valid power of attorney, if you
become unable to handle your own affairs, it is very likely that no one will
be able to handle all of the matters that need to be handled for you. These
may include paying your bills, dealing with your mortgage lender, pension
provider or social security, handling your life insurance policy, annuity, saving account or tax returns. All that personal business that we face day in
and day out to keep our lives, our families and our homes moving forward
for our benefit and our family’s benefit. The easiest way to make sure that
someone can step in and handle all these personal, business affairs is to
execute a good, broad, durable power of attorney. Without such a legal document, your family is faced with the only option likely available: petitioning the probate court for control over your affairs. Another costly, time-consuming lawsuit that is easily avoidable through your execution of a good,
broad, durable power of attorney. Another job for a seasoned, estate planning attorney.
And, last but not least, the final key component of an estate plan is a
medical directive setting forth your wishes and desires for medical treatment. A directive that sets forth who should step in and direct your medical
care (another agent) if you are unable to direct what you want at the time a
decision needs to be made. And, also a directive that addresses end-of-life
care should you have a terminal illness or be in a permanent state of unconsciousness. You can execute a health care power of attorney and select an
agent to make health care decisions for you and give them broad authority
but also direction by you as to your desires and preferences. You can state
your desires and wishes and direct that your family and health care
providers follow your wishes should you be unable to direct your care.
Most people know what they want and have strong feelings about what
they don’t want. Putting your wishes on paper in a proper legal document
that has the force and control of law behind it helps insure that your wishes
will be carried out.
Making sure that you have these key estate planning components in
place should you die or become incapacitated is important for all of us, no
matter the nature or extent of our property and possessions. These key
components provide you with the peace of mind that you have taken care
of these important matters for your family and loved ones, that you have
put in place your plan to protect your property and affairs for them. You
have made it easier for them and have let them know your wishes and
desires. It’s the least that we can do. And sometimes, it’s the most that we
need to do.

Our Elders

Everyone gets to be young, but not everyone gets
to be old. This is a fact. When facing the “Golden
Years”, we tend to complain and dread the aging
process, but it is truly a privilege to live a long and
storied life. The “Golden Years”, are not always kind
to our physical beings- aging may make us weaker,
prone to more diseases, less agile but maybe this is
because of the wisdom we have gained over the
years is much more important than the bodies we
house it in. So why do we all so often not respect our
elders?
In traditional cultures, elders are honored and
revered and fill a vital role in societies. In our American culture, where we
are illusioned that we can maintain our youth indefinitely, we do not like
to be reminded of the things our elders bring. Thousands of elders in our
culture are victims of abuse by their own children or caretakers every year.
Respecting our senior citizens is incredibly important in our society. Not
only does it honor their lives, it is healthy for us to recognize the reasons to
support and value those elders that have much to share and teach us.
Recently this poem was emailed to me and it impacted me so much, I
thought it was worth sharing. This poem was written by a woman who
died in a nursing home, all alone and left nothing of value except this
poem, which has touched the hearts of many.
A young girl of Sixteen……with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now……a lover she’ll meet.
A bride soon at twenty……my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows……that I promised to keep.
At Twenty-Five , now……I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide……a secure happy home.
A woman of Thirty……my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other…with ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons……have grown and are gone,
But my man is beside me……to see I don’t mourn.
At Fifty, once more,……babies play ‘round my knee,
Again, we know children……my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me……my husband’s now dead.
I look at the future…….and shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing……young of their own.
And I think of the years……and the love that I’ve known.
I’m now an old woman……and nature is cruel.
‘Tis just to make old age…….look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles……grace and vigor depart.
There is now a stone……where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass……a young girl still dwells,

Uncertain of habit…….with faraway eyes?
So open your eyes, people……open and see,
Who dribbles her food……and makes no reply.

When you say in a loud voice……’I do wish you’d try!’
We all have a story and if we are privileged, we will experience the
aging process. It won’t be easy, it is a hard period in the lives of those that
experience it, so try hard to age gracefully and appreciate every year you
are given. I hope we all will remember the words of this poem when we
meet an older person, do not brush them aside , try to appreciate the
young soul within. Remember if lucky, we will all one day, be there too!

What’s Better, Baseball or Allergies?

With the
first scents of
spring in the
air and
warmer
weather
approaching,
many individuals’ thoughts
turn to baseball. And, of course, baseball is better than allergies, but unfortunately
for some, the return of the “grand
old game” coincides with the return
of their not-so-grand old spring misery. At about the time the first pitch
is thrown in spring training, pollen
begins to appear in the air from
pine, oak, elm, sycamore, and walnut trees. Because of its larger size
and visibility the Pine pollen usually
takes the rap for all of the grief, but
it’s because of these factors that Pine
pollen is not a major allergen. The
other hardwood trees mentioned

above produce pollens that are
microscopic and light; floating in the
surrounding air where they are able
to impact noses and eyes and do
their allergy damage. In addition
they can travel on the wind 50100miles from their source making it
difficult to hide from their effects. In
the latter innings of the spring grass
pollens are the offending culprits.
Like tree pollens, grass pollens are
also microscopic airborne particles
responsible for the sneezing fits,
runny and stuffy noses, and itchy,
watery eyes typical of a seasonal
allergy. The most unfortunate allergy sufferers can have Asthma, which
is like getting hit by a fastball to the
chest. Here shortness of breath,
wheezing, cough and chest tightness
are the typical signs.
Suffering, fortunately is not
mandatory. A bullpen full of relief
for allergy sufferers is available in
many different forms. Of course,
avoidance of the allergen is always
most desirable; however, this is
rarely easy or practical. Some helpful tips include staying indoors on
high pollen days and avoiding outdoor activities in the early morning
hours when pollen counts are at
their highest. Also stay in air-condi-

tioned environments because these
units are excellent filters of airborne
pollens, so keep your windows
closed in your home and cars for
clearer days. When avoidance is
suboptimal, alternative treatment in
the form of medications designed to
control symptoms and allergy
immunotherapy like shots can be
used. Newer medications are much
improved and many are now also
available over the counter, but free
of many of the debilitating side
effects of their older over-the-counter teammates.
Allergy immunotherapy like allergy shots is like getting vaccinated
against allergies. This is the only
allergy treatment that treats the
underlying cause of allergy rather
than just trying to control symptoms. Slowly, over time, symptoms
disappear, freeing the patient from
misery, serious complications and
the need for frequent medication
and their potential side effects.
Eventually Allergy Immunotherapy
can be discontinued and for many
no further allergy treatment is
required again.
So don’t be a wimp this year and
spend this season warming the
bench, shut up in the dugout; get an
allergist to help coach you to
become a power hitting star and get
you to the playoffs and series, allergy free.

A Spring In Her Step

I met Reata and her husband recently at the Home
Show and she said she went to CuraLase Laser
Therapy after hearing my EASY radio commercials.
Reata was a very successful realtor in Maryland
before moving to Myrtle Beach two years ago. Her
problem with back pain was related to a fall down a
flight of steps 40 years earlier. Couple that with age
and deteriorating discs, and you have debilitating

the rest of your life.
Reata found a great neurosurgeon in Washington

How are
you feeling

With Warmer Weather, It’s Time
to Lighten Up!
frozen peas), the diced baby zucchini, the shredded or cubed chicken breast, and the lemon zest

peas/zucchini to become crisp-tender and bright
green in the hot stock, about 3-4 minutes; check
to see if additional salt or pepper is needed.

quinoa to a bowl, and ladle some of the soup

over some of the fresh basil, and squeeze in some
additional lemon juice from the lemon wedge

Quiche Cups
1 (14.5-ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and
chopped
1 package frozen spinach, drained
5 eggs, whisked
3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
2/3 cup milk (any kind)
1/2 cup chopped white onion
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare 12 baking cups by either spraying them liberally with
cooking spray, or lining them with paper liners.
Stir all ingredients together in a large mixing
bowl until combined. Portion the mixture into
the 12 prepared baking cups so that they are all
nearly full.
Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the eggs
are set and a toothpick inserted in the middle of
the quiche comes out clean. Serve immediately.
Lemony Chicken Stir Fry
with Asparagus
Serves 3-4
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cubed
Kosher salt, to taste
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 bunch asparagus, cut into 2 inch pieces
6 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Lemon zest
Salt & pepper
Cook asparagus and oil in a skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes. When 1 minute
remains, add garlic. Set asparagus and garlic
aside.
Season chicken with salt & pepper. Increase
heat to high and cook chicken until browned. Set
chicken aside and add soy sauce and chicken
broth to skillet. Bring to boil for about 1 minute.
And lemon juice, water, and corn starch and stir
for about 1 minute. Return chicken and asparagus
to pan. Coat with sauce. Top with lemon zest.
Tortellini-Vegetable Bake
Simple Lemony Chicken &
Spring Veggie Soup with
Quinoa & Fresh Basil
Yield: Serves about 4
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 leek, quartered, white part sliced
2 carrots, peeled and diced small (if you can find
multi-colored carrots, those are beautiful)
2 cloves garlic, pressed through garlic press
Salt
Black pepper
1 teaspoon herbs de Provence
4 cups chicken stock, hot
1 cup fresh English peas (or frozen peas)
1 cup baby zucchini, small dice
2 cooked chicken breasts, shredded or cubed
(you can use rotisserie chicken for convenience)
2 teaspoons lemon zest
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 cups cooked quinoa
1/4 cup chopped, fresh basil leaves
4 lemon wedges, garnish
Place a medium-large soup pot over medium
heat; add in the butter and olive oil, and once
melted, add in the sliced leek and diced carrots,
and sweat for about 3-5 minutes, or until slightly
tender and the leeks are becoming translucent.
Add in the garlic, and once that becomes aromatic, add in a pinch or two of salt and pepper,
and the herbs de Provence; stir to combine.
Next, add in the hot chicken stock, and bring
to a gentle simmer; cover partially with a lid, and
cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until carrots are
tender.
Turn the heat off; add in the English peas (or
2, 9 ounce packages refrigerated cheese tortellini
1 1/2 cups fresh sugar snap peas, trimmed and
halved crosswise
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrot (1 medium)
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1/3 cup vegetable broth
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crushed
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup milk
1 8 ounce package cream cheese, cubed and softened
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup coarsely chopped red or green sweet
pepper (1 small)
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook tortellini
according to package directions, adding sugar
snap peas and carrot for the last 1 minute of
cooking; drain.
Meanwhile, in a 12-inch skillet melt butter
over medium heat. Add mushrooms; cook about
5 minutes or until mushrooms are tender, stirring
occasionally. Remove from skillet.
In a screw-top jar combine broth, flour,
oregano, garlic salt, and black pepper. Cover and
shake until smooth. Add to the same skillet; add
milk. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
Add cream cheese; cook and stir until smooth.
Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice.
Stir tortellini mixture, mushrooms, tomatoes,
and sweet pepper into cream cheese mixture.
Spoon into an ungreased 3-quart rectangular baking dish. Bake, covered, about 30 minutes or until
heated through. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

health food aisle
and you will find
yourself inundated
with rows and
rows of vitamin
supplements claiming to be the
answer to all of
your nagging
health problems.
Unfortunately,
many of these supplements have not
been evaluated or approved by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and some may contain levels
higher than necessary or healthy. Luckily, adequate
levels of most vitamins can be obtained through a
balanced consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin A: Vitamin A is an antioxidant that
helps protect the skin and eyes as well as may
improve immune function. Vitamin A has a
toxic level of about 3,000
micrograms/day, however,
this level is difficult to reach from food alone and is
generally only a risk for individuals taking a vitamin A supplement. Vitamin A can be obtained from
foods such as liver, beef, eggs, cheese, leafy-green
vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes and apricots.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is well-known for its
immune function properties, helping with the formation of antibodies. It also plays a role in collagen
synthesis, important for the formation of muscles,
tendons and ligaments. Vitamin C is readily found
in foods such as red bell peppers, oranges, grapefruits, spinach and strawberries.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D helps metabolize calcium,
which is necessary for bone growth and maintenance. In addition to sun exposure, vitamin D can
be obtained from fortified products, such as milk
and orange juice, pink salmon and sardines.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps
protect cell membranes. It may also help protect
against the development of certain cancers and
Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin E can be found in
sunflower seeds, almonds, canola oil,
sweet potatoes and hazelnuts.
Vitamin K: Vitamin K is a critical
vitamin needed to help with blood clotting. Some individuals on certain anticoagulant medications may need to
monitor their vitamin K intake.
Vitamin K is most commonly found
in leafy green vegetables, broccoli
and some oils such as soybean oil.
The B-Vitamins: The B-vitamins
work in several ways in the body,
working as a co-enzyme and helping with the synthesis and metabolism of energy-yielding nutrients,
such as carbohydrates, fats and protein. Many of
the B-vitamins are commonly found in fortified
grain products. Niacin is also found in chicken,
turkey, salmon and eggs. Vitamins B6 and B12 are
predominately found in animal products, such as
fish, beef, chicken and cheese, so vegetarians may
need to supplement their diet with these vitamins if
they do not consume any animal products.
You should always consult with your healthcare
provider before taking a nutritional supplement.
Because vitamins are readily available in the safest
form from foods, individuals should aim to meet
their recommended nutrient needs through a wellbalanced, healthful diet.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I enjoyed your informative article on spinal stenosis. I also have acute and chronic pain in my lower back. I am 75 years of
age and have had vertebroplasty on seven vertebrae. I realize that my back
will not be normal again. I am currently working with a doctor who uses
osteopathic manipulation. He is suggesting prolotherapy in conjunction
with the manipulation. I have tried the prolotherapy previously without any
relief of pain.
What is your assessment of prolotherapy therapy, or would you advise
me to go to a pain clinic? The pain level in the lower back usually is about 6
or higher on pain scale of 1 to 10.
I walk 3 miles every day in a grocery store using a small grocery cart. I
am trying other exercises, even working on a balance ball. But it just does
not seem to improve. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give

ANSWER: Prolotherapy is the injection of an irritant solution into a
space, designed to stimulate healing and reduce pain. However, if it hasn’t
worked for you in the past, it is unlikely to work for you again. On the other
hand, some studies have shown prolotherapy to be modestly effective when
combined with spinal manipulation.
A pain clinic has several modalities available, including steroid injections
and pain medications. Unfortunately, steroid injections have been shown to
be ineffective in back pain that is due to spinal stenosis lasting beyond six
weeks.
It sounds like you are doing what you can with exercise. I think continuing with the manipulation and prolotherapy as a trial of six weeks or so is
reasonable, and at that point you can continue if it begins helping. If not,
you can try a pain specialist, as there are effective non-narcotic medications
that may be of help, in combination with your continued exercise.
However, I think that an experienced physical therapist may be able to
guide your exercises more effectively.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband drinks tonic water with quinine every
day because he was told that it will help alleviate his leg cramps. He drinks
as much as 1 1/2 quarts a day. Is that much safe? If not, what is a safe
amount? — D.V.
ANSWER: Many people have found that quinine relieves leg cramps.
However, the Food and Drug Administration banned sales of quinine for leg
cramps due to unproven effectiveness and the possibility of side effects.
Quinine in large doses can cause abnormal heart rhythms, blood problems
and even organ failure.
However, the amount of quinine in tonic water is quite small, compared
with quinine tablets. One common brand has 17mg in a liter, so your husband is getting about 25mg. The quinine tablets formerly prescribed for leg
cramps were 200mg. Toxic effects are unlikely at the dose in quinine water.
Some people are allergic to quinine, in which case even the small dose in
tonic water could potentially cause problems.
Your husband can keep on as he’s been doing if he finds that it helps.

Framing The
Smile

As many of you
already know, the possibilities are endless for
smile enhancement
with porcelain laminate veneers. What
many people do not
know is that just like a
beautiful painting, the
smile must be framed.
Simply adjusting or
changing the frame can
make a decent smile stunning. So what constitutes the frame for a smile? As you may have
guessed, the gums and lips surrounding the
teeth finish the smile. This is usually the point
where I pull the stack of Cosmopolitan or Vogue
magazines out to prove my point. I’ll ask my
patients what they like about the smiles they see,
and together we usually discover that it is more
than just the teeth.
Let’s talk about the gums.
One of the most common problems we see is the gummy
smile. The usual complaint is
either “My teeth are too short”
or “My gums are too big”. In
fact, most of the time, both
statements are correct. Gummy
smiles can make the teeth look
short and poorly proportioned.
Even the most expensive veneer
from the most prestigious ceramic laboratory
cannot overcome a tooth that is wider than it is
tall. For most, the ideal way to re-proportion the
tooth is to increase the actual length. Sometimes
a small amount can be added to the incisal (tip)
edge, however for most gummy smiles the
length must be gained by gum sculpting.

accomplished in a short time, under only local
anesthetic with little to no bleeding, and only

Taking this one step further, the gums are
framed by the lips. If patient “A” and Patient “B”
have identical tooth and gum anatomy but
patient “A” has a short upper lip, while patient
“B” has a long upper lip, patient “A” will have a
more gummy smile. Subsequently, this patient
would be treatment planned differently than the
patient with the long upper lip. Patient “ A”
might require gum sculpting or possibly Botox
for the overly mobile lip, while patient “B”
might just need more lip support from the
veneers to keep the lip from coming so far over
the teeth.
With more and more patients seeking cosmetic
dentistry, it becomes important for the consumer

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

lliotibial (IT) band
syndrome is a common
overuse injury experienced by runners and
active adults. It typically
presents as a painful
area on the outside of
the knee that can be tender to touch and often
increases in pain with
activity. The IT band
begins along the hip
crest where the tensor fasciae latae and gluteus
maximus muscles join to form this tendinous
band. The band then tracks over the hip, down
the outside of the leg, crosses the knee joint and
inserts just past the knee joint line on the outside
of the lower leg. Dysfunction of this IT band
often arises from poor biomechanics during
repetitive activities such as running, cycling, etc
for various reasons such as muscle imbalances
and/or leg length discrepancies.
One example of poor biomechanics that can
contribute to IT band syndrome is described as a
valgus knee position that people sometimes
experience during the weight bearing phase of
running. This valgus angle describes a position
of the knee that is more medial (or towards the
midline of the body) than the hip and foot during weight bearing. This position of the knee rel-

as running causes significant stress and strain to
the IT band. This strain multiplied by the thousands of times that individuals will take a step
can lead to undue muscle tension and tightness,
known as myofascial restrictions. These myofascial restrictions present as palpable taught muscle bands or even knots known as trigger points
that can also be tender to touch. They can occur
anywhere along the length of the IT band and
cause tension and tightness resulting in strain,
inflammation and pain where the tendon inserts
into the bone just past the knee.
Once an individual develops symptoms related to IT band syndrome, it is helpful to see a
Physical Therapist for evaluation to decipher
what might be their specific impairment leading
to poor biomechanics and this particular overuse
injury. One common cause of the valgus knee
position during weight bearing is weakness present in the muscles located on the outside of the
hip. When these muscles function properly, they
aid in maintaining a neutral knee position while
an individual weight bears on one leg. If there is
weakness present, these muscles will stretch and
allow the knee to translate medially (or towards
the midline of the body) leading to the valgus
knee position. Another cause of this valgus knee
position can be located on the opposite end of
the chain, the foot. If a person has more of an
unstable foot, where the arch collapses during
weight bearing, this causes the lower leg, and
thus the knee, to translate into the valgus leg
position when bearing weight on one leg. If
either or these factors are found to be causes in
the case of an individuals IT band syndrome, the
physical therapist can direct the individual with
appropriate exercises to help strengthen and stabilize where necessary to reduce strain on the
knee.

In addition to addressing the biomechanical causes related to muscle
imbalances, it is imperative to address the myofascial restrictions present in
the IT band in order to increase soft tissue extensibility, reduce inflammation, and decrease pain. Soft tissue restrictions will be addressed through
various techniques such as foam rolling, soft tissue massage, and/or dry
needling as well as therapist instructed stretches to most appropriately
address the individual’s restrictions. Dry needling is a procedure where fine
gauge solid filament needles are inserted into the symptomatic tissue in
order to stimulate the body’s natural response of healing and to release or
deactivate active trigger points. Dry needling is now being offered at all of
our Professional Rehabilitation Services Offices.
If an individual suspects they have symptoms related to IT band pain
syndrome, they would benefit from being evaluated by a physical therapist
to decipher their specific impairments contributing to the dysfunction. Then,
through soft tissue technique and the instruction of proper exercise, they can

to maintain in order to ensure their symptoms do not return as they return

Create Your
Life Vision

One of my favorite quotes is from Napoleon
Hill—“What the mind of man can conceive and
believe, it can achieve.”
Many people don’t know what their purpose
is in life. They aren’t sure what their journey is
supposed to look like, or what they are working
toward. Others have an idea of their purpose,
but just aren’t clear how to get there. Research
tells us that if we can visualize our ideal life,
then we are far more likely to succeed in getting there. Some of us just haven’t taken the
time to think about what we really want our
future to look, sound and feel like.
Strategies to help you create your vision
Some of us lack focus and clarity about what we want and don’t want in our
lives. It isn’t easy to set goals and intentions toward something you aren’t clear
about. Creating your vision is the key to unlocking your potential and making
your desires and dreams a reality. Here are some ways to get started so you
can envision your ideal life. Just remember that life is editable, and sometimes
we have to change direction. Also, you are never too old to start.
Create a Have/Do/Be list

People tend to live their lives trying to have stuff so they can do more of
what they want to do so they can be happy. Our lives don’t really flow that
way. We need to be authentic, and happy with who we really are, so we can do
what we need to do in order to have what is really important to us.
Take a piece of paper and divide it into 3 columns. Label the columns “Be”
“Do” and “Have”
Under the Be column think about who you really want to be. Are you comfortable with yourself? Do you aspire to be something that you haven’t yet
been able to become? Do you want to be more spiritual, caring, or nurturing?
Do you want to be a better spouse or friend? Do you have fears you want to
overcome so you can be more powerful or stronger? Write down anything that
comes to mind.
What do you want to be doing more of in your life? Do you want to volunteer, play more golf, or have more time to spend with loved ones? What makes
you happy when you are spending time doing it? Maybe you want to do
something you have never tried before. Write it down in the Do column.
Under the Have column, think about what you want in your life. We all
want to have things in our lives that inspire and make us happy. Maybe you
want some things in your life that seem too expensive to have or would take to
long to get, it doesn’t matter, write it down. Write it all down. Don’t think too
hard about it or how you would be able to have these things—just write what
comes to your mind. Some ideas might be a red convertible sports car, house
on the water, sailboat, or an amazing partner and wonderful children.
Write it all down and you have a great place to start on creating your vision.
The key is to not over think the process, let your hand write down everything
as if you had all the resources in the world to get whatever you wanted.
What is your ideal day?
Think about what it would be like living a day in your ideal life. Get a piece
of paper and write down your ideal day. Close your eyes for a moment and
think about how that day would go. Where would you live? What time would
you wake up? Would you be alone or is there a significant other? Where
would you work? What activities would you engage in before lunch? Would
you work out? Would you meet someone for lunch? If so, who would that be?
Be very specific, and continue writing about your day until you are ready to
turn into bed.
Think about your transportation, associates, friends, pets, and living environment. Do you live on the water, in the mountains or on a farm? Remember
that this day is the best day in your ideal life. It should excite you to think
about the possibilities.
Read it again and again. How do you feel? What needs to change in order
for you to actually have this ideal day? Think about actions you need to take
and write them down. Your vision for yourself should become clearer.
Create a Mission Statement
Think about writing a letter to your future self. In this letter, congratulate
yourself on all of your accomplishments. Your future self should be at least
five or ten years older than you are now. This strategy is similar to the
“Obituary” exercise, but instead of writing our obituary, we are seeing ourselves happy, fulfilled and living our ideal life.
What have you accomplished? What is important to you? You might congratulate yourself for being such a loving wife and mom. You might mention
the 40 pounds you have lost and write about how much better you feel. You
could mention activities you have taken up such as golf, boating, running.
Maybe you are running a volunteer organization or gotten some great promotion at work. Write this letter to yourself in the third person, just like you
would write to anyone else. Keep this and read it daily. This can become your
mission statement. This will be how you see yourself in the future and what
you can aspire to become.
Remember, if you can dream it and see it, you can plan it and achieve it.

Anesthesia has also changed, thus changing how we operate. The changes have been

patients often worry about being “put under”.
Over the years there has been a shift from
general anesthesia, which is the type where
the patient is completely asleep to heavy
sedation or light sedation. Now many operations are done under sedation with the watchful eye of a nurse anesthetist so they can
monitor the patient’s vital signs and the surgeon can concentrate on the art of the surgery.
Another advancement in our surgery center is with laser technology. We use a Sciton
laser that is one of the most cutting edge
pieces of technology on the market. In the
last five years laser surgery has become and
intricate part, and very valuable adjunct to
surgery. The laser has revolutionized procedures like the facelift, abdominalplasty,
flankplasty, and other body contouring proce-
dures. Like in any industry we are also constantly investigating new products and technology. Breast implant surgery has changed

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) refers to a
disorder that involves
abdominal pain and
cramping, as well as
changes in bowel
movements. It is not
the same as inflammatory bowel disease
(IBD), which includes
Crohn’s disease and
ulcerative colitis.
Irritable bowel syndrome may be a lifelong
condition. In some cases, symptoms are disabling and reduce the ability to work, travel,
function normally and attend social events.
Symptoms can often be improved or relieved
through treatment. IBS does not cause permanent harm to the intestines, and it does not lead
to a serious disease, such as cancer.
What are the causes of IBS? There are many
possible causes of IBS. For example, there may
be a problem with muscles in the intestine, or
the intestine may be more sensitive to stretching
or movement. There is no problem with the
structure of the intestine.
It is not clear why patients develop IBS, but in
some instances, it occurs after an intestinal infection. This is called post-infectious IBS. There
may also be other triggers.
Stress can worsen IBS. The colon is connected
to the brain through nerves of the autonomic
nervous system. These nerves become more
active during times of stress, and can cause the
intestines to squeeze or contract more. People
with IBS may have a colon that is over-responsive to these nerves.
IBS can occur at any age, but it often begins in
adolescence or early adulthood. It is more common in women. About 1 in 6 people in the U.S.
have symptoms of IBS. It is the most common
intestinal complaint for which patients are
referred to a gastroenterologist.
Symptoms range from mild to severe. Most
people have mild symptoms. Symptoms vary
from person to person.
Abdominal pain, fullness, gas, and bloating
that have been present for at least 6 months are
the main symptoms of IBS. The pain and other
symptoms will often:
• Occur after meals
• Come and go
• Be reduced or go away after a bowel
movement
People with IBS may switch between constipation and diarrhea, or mostly have one or the
other.
• People with diarrhea will have frequent,
loose, watery stools. They will often have an
urgent need to have a bowel movement,
which is difficult to control.
• Those with constipation will have difficulty passing stool, as well as less frequent bowel
movements. They will often need to strain
and will feel cramping with a bowel movement. Often, they do not eliminate any stool,
or only a small amount.
For some people, the symptoms may get
worse for a few weeks or a month, and then
decrease for a while. For other people, symptoms are present most of the time and may even
slowly increase.
People with IBS may also lose their appetite.
How is the Diagnosis made? Most of the time,
your doctor can diagnose IBS based on your
symptoms, with few or no tests. Eating a lactosefree diet for 2 weeks may help the doctor evaluate for a possible lactase deficiency.
There is no test to diagnose IBS, but tests may
be done to rule out other problems:
• Blood tests to see if you have a low blood
count (anemia)
• Stool cultures to rule out an infection
Some patients will have sigmoidoscopy or
colonoscopy. During these tests, a hollow tube is
inserted through the anus. The doctor can see
through this tube. You may need these tests if:
• Symptoms began later in life (over age 50)
• You have symptoms such as weight loss
or bloody stools
• You have abnormal blood tests (such as a
low blood count)
Other disorders that can cause similar symptoms include:
• Celiac disease
Colon cancer (although cancer rarely causes
typical IBS symptoms, unless symptoms such
as weight loss, blood in the stools or abnormal blood tests are present)
• Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
How is IBS treated? The goal of treatment is
to relieve symptoms. Lifestyle changes can be
helpful in some cases of IBS. For example, regular exercise and improved sleep habits may
reduce anxiety and help relieve bowel symptoms. Dietary changes can be helpful. However,
no specific diet can be recommended for IBS in
general, because the condition differs from one
person to another. The following changes may
help:
• Avoid foods and drinks that stimulate the
intestines (such as caffeine, tea, carbonated
beverage, wheat, rye, barley, chocolate, milk
products, fried fatty foods, raisins, chocolate,
beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel
sprouts, onions and alcohol)
• Avoid large meals,
eat slowly
• Reduce stress
and exercise
• Increase
dietary fiber, drink
enough water six
(6oz) to eight (8oz.)
glasses a day
Talk with your
doctor before
taking overthe-counter
medications.
• Fiber
supplements can
make
symptoms
worse
• Laxatives
taken for constipation can become habit forming
No one medication will work for everyone.
Medications your doctor might try include:
• Anticholinergic medications (dicyclomine,
propantheline, belladonna, and hyoscyamine)
taken about a half-hour before eating to control colon muscle spasms
• Loperamide to treat diarrhea
• Low doses of tricyclic antidepressants to
help relieve intestinal pain
• Lubiprostone for constipation symptoms
• Medications that relax muscles in the
intestines
Counseling may help in cases of severe anxiety
or depression
What can I expect (prognosis) with IBS?

attend social events. Symptoms can often be
improved or relieved through treatment. IBS

1. Change. By the time you reach retirement age, your
brain has mastered many tasks. You have to think of creative ways to surprise it. So change is vital to brain health.
Change your routines, change your environment, make
new friends, have different conversations, listen to different music, try new foods. List the most familiar things in
your life and then change them.
2. Think. Don’t let your brain get bored. Stimulate it
with lots of new, refreshing information. Read articles,
visit museums, study a new topic or take up a new hobby.
That awkward feeling you may remember from your first
day on the job is what you want to replicate. Try learning
a foreign language or a musical instrument.

3. Move. Experts agree that aerobic exercise has the
greatest benefit in terms of helping your brain stay young.
Encourage important blood flow to the brain by doing at
least 21/2 hours of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) each week. Start where you can and gradually build
up from there. Setting small, monthly goals keeps your
efforts focused and on track.
4. Eat smart. Keep those arteries—in your heart and your
brain—from getting clogged with fat by eating plenty of
fruits, veggies and whole grains. Stick with healthy fats
such as those in nuts, avocados and olive oil. Include
plenty of lean protein and fiber to round things out. Try to
fill half your plate at each meal with fruits and vegetables.
They’re full of anti-oxidants and supply important nutrients. Avoid white flour, generally found in breads and
pastries. Losing any extra pounds can help, too.
Maintaining a healthy weight means a better chance at a
healthy brain.
5. Be happy. Human beings are social creatures. The
brain is designed to interact with others and derives great
benefit from close relationships. When you’re happy, your
brain is happy. When you’re stressed or depressed, your
brain releases a chemical called cortisol. Cortisol in small
doses is useful for alertness and concentration. When it
lingers, however, it attacks the cells in the hippocampus,
where memories are formed. Getting plenty of sleep is
also important for relaxing and renewing the mind.

Taste of the Coast at NMB Park
and Sport Complex
The city of North Myrtle Beach
and Risen Christ Lutheran School
are excited to announce the Eighth
Annual Taste of the Coast to be held
at the North Myrtle Beach Park and
Sports Complex. The event will be
held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from
11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Local restaurants will set up
booths and offer samples of their
specialties. This event promises to
be “The Family Fun Event of the
Year” offering a family-friendly
atmosphere with something for
everyone. The event will feature a
huge “Kid Zone” with exciting
activities including blow up rides,
face painters, and much, much
more! Live entertainment will be
provided throughout the day featuring local talent. Admission prior to
the event is $3 for adults $5 at the
door. Children 12 and under free.
Food and ride tickets are $1 each.
Risen Christ has been a member
of the community since its founding
in 1976 and is a member of the
largest protestant, parochial school
system in the United States. A number of successful local businessmen
and women have either attended
the school or enrolled their children
in its excellent academic programs.

Rosacea

Rosacea (ro-ZAY-she-ah) is a common facial
skin disorder that effects an estimated 14 million people in the United States. It is more
common in women and generally presents
itself after the age of 30. The characteristic
signs and symptoms of rosacea include flushing, persistent redness, bumps or pimples, and
small blood vessels, called telangiectasias. The
affected areas may be accompanied by a stinging sensation, eye irritation, skin thickening,
and facial swelling. A number of factors, called
triggers, may cause flare-ups. The National
Rosacea Society reports the most common triggers, from highest to lowest
frequency, include: sun exposure, emotional stress, hot weather, wind,
heavy exercise, alcohol consumption, hot baths, cold weather, spicy food,
humidity, indoor heat, certain skin-care products, hot beverages, and certain cosmetics. Even though the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is
no cure, it can often be controlled.
There are four different subtypes of rosacea. Subtype 1 is characterized
by facial redness and flushing. Small blood vessels are often visible in the
areas of redness and a stinging sensation is common. This subtype is considered one of the more difficult to treat and therefore it becomes important to identify the triggers to help avoid flares. The small blood vessels
and background redness can often be dramatically reduced using lasers or
intense pulse light (IPL) therapy. Several treatments, three to four weeks
apart are often required, along with maintenance treatments several times
a year to help control the underlying disease process.
Subtype 2 rosacea is characterized by a more persistent redness with
acne-like bumps and pimples. This subtype can often follow or progress
from subtype 1. Oral and topical medications are used to help control the
signs and symptoms, and may be used in combination with lasers or IPL.
Thickening of the skin and enlargement of the nose are characteristic of
subtype 3 rosacea. Mild cases can be treated with topical medications but
more severe presentations will often require surgical intervention.
Ocular rosacea, subtype 4, presents with eye irritation, and can include
watery eyes, a bloodshot appearance, burning or stinging, and even
blurred vision. Mild symptoms can often be controlled with artificial tears
and daily cleansing of the lids with baby shampoo.More severe situations
should be treated by an eye specialist.
No matter which subtype or combination of subtypes are present, it is
always important to avoid the triggers that cause flairs and to have proper
skin care. Rosacea causes skin that is easily irritated and patients should
generally avoid any products that cause burning, stinging, or itching. The
skin should be cleaned with gentle cleansers, avoiding any abrasive materials. After washing with lukewarm water, not hot or cold, the face should
be dried by blotting, not rubbing. The skillful application of non irritating
cosmetics can help to conceal the effects of rosacea. Green or yellow tint
can help to diminish the redness of the skin. Avoidance of sun exposure
and the use of a good quality sun screen or block are essential. We encourage the use of titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide to ensure maximum sun
protection.
A qualified physician, who is knowledgeable about rosacea, can help to
tailor the best regiment of treatment that will optimize your results and
help control the effects of this disorder.
