ALL 10TH GRADE STUDENTS IN OREGON take the test on this date for free.
11th graders planning or considering a 4-year college should also take the test.
Cost is $14.00
In Oregon, all 10th graders take the Preliminary SAT at no cost.
Approximately 3.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT each year, primarily 10th- and 11th-graders, but
any high school student can take it
Students must test in the 11th grade to qualify for scholarships and recognition, but testing in the 10th
grade provides valuable and early feedback while there is still time to plan and prepare.
BENEFITS:
1) Helps students prepare for the SAT (for students planning to attend a 4-year college or university, it is
recommended to take the SAT’s twice – once in the spring of Junior year and once in fall of senior year)
2) On average, students who take the PSAT will score 136 points higher when they take the SAT.
3) National Merit scholarship opportunity for juniors
4) National Hispanic Recognition Program
5) Personalized feedback on ways to improve core academic skills
6) On-line college and career planning tools
7) An assessment tool to help measure student college readiness
8) Free to all 10th graders in Oregon; low cost to other students ($14) – fee waivers are available for juniors
– see Ms. Moss for information about fee waivers for 11th graders

COLLEGE PAYS
•
The typical bachelor’s degree recipient can expect to earn about 66% more throughout their career than
the typical high school graduate earns over the same period.*
•
Parents and students sometimes think that federal assistance is available only to those struggling to make
ends meet and so bypass completing the FAFSA thinking that they earn too much to qualify. The federal
government is a great resource for anyone in search of cost-effective solutions to cover college expenses.
They do this in the form of grants, work-study and student loans and most students qualify for these
regardless of family income. In addition, many scholarship eligibility requirements include completion of
the FAFSA.
•
The FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) is used to determine the financial aid package you’ll be
offered by the schools you are considering. The first step: complete the FAFSA as soon after January 1st
as possible at fafsa.ed.gov. Before that date, you can complete the fafsa forecasting @
fafsa4caster.ed.gov.
