The South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY) will hold its Eighth
Annual Leadership Awards Gala on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Lighthouse
at Chelsea Piers, Pier 61, 23rd St. and West Side Highway in New York City
commemorating leaders within the South Asian legal and business communities.
Our Gala theme, "Being the Change," is drawn from the quote by Mahatma Gandhi,
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." This year we are honoring South
Asian attorneys who have demonstrated outstanding skill and leadership abilities,
illustrating ways in which South Asian attorneys are truly "Being the Change." The
Gala draws nearly 300 South Asian attorneys from New York and across the
country, including in-house counsel, private practitioners, and public interest
attorneys, as well as influential business leaders.

SABANY FUND
SABANY’S PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The SABANY Fund annually awards Public Interest Fellowships to outstanding law students who have demonstrated
a commitment to public service so they may spend their summer working unpaid in the public interest sector.
In 2014, the SABANY Fund awarded Fellowships to four recipients.
SABANY’s 2014 Fellowship recipients include: Ms. Pious Ahuja, a summer intern with the Department of Justice;
Ms. Nabanita Pal, a summer intern with the Bronx Defenders; Ms. Pooja Shah, a summer intern with the Urban
Justice Center; and Ms. Syeda Tasnim, a summer intern with the Housing Conservation Coordinators, Inc.
Each year, SABANY raises money through ticket
purchases and donors to fund the Fellowships and
plans the annual awards benefit during which the
winners are honored. SABANY supports and promotes
public interest by raising awareness of public interest
legal issues, encouraging the pursuit of legal careers
in public interest and organizing events and projects
to benefit the public interest.

The Fellowship Benefit featured a keynote address by Nisha Agarwal, Commissioner of the New York City
Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. The SABANY Fellowship Benefit was made possible by our Platinum

This year, SABANY’s Public Interest Fellowship program was awarded the Outstanding Program of the Year by
the South Asian Bar Association of North America (“SABA-North America”).
SABANY’S PRO BONO CLEARINGHOUSE
INCREASING ACCESS TO JUSTICE
SABANY launched the Clearinghouse in 2011 in an effort to increase access to justice by connecting the
South Asian community in the New York City area to pro bono legal services. The Clearinghouse functions
as a referral system between individuals and organizations in the area requiring free legal assistance
and SABANY members who are interested in serving the community’s needs. Since its launch in 2011, the
Clearinghouse continues to grow with a list-serve of over 200 attorneys, and partnerships with over 20 law
firms and 22 community-based organizations.
