The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening infections. The disease occurs in one of every 3,500 live births and about 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. Cystic fibrosis affects 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. and 70,000 people worldwide. Ten million people in the U.S.—or one in 30—carry the defective CF gene.
