art103: Design Foundations___an introductory study of the principles of
visual perception and organization, primarily two-dimensional design in an
achromatic mode.
art123: Color Theory___ a continued study of the principles of visual perception
and two-dimensional design with an emphasis in color theory.
gdes110 & gdes150: Computers in Design I & II___ an introduction to the
computer as a design tool where students learn how to use the software to design
layouts, create graphics, format type, and prepare imagery for the production of
graphic design projects. Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are used.
gdes160: Graphic Design I ___ this course acts as formal acceptance into the
Graphic Design program. It is an introduction to the principles of the graphic design
field. This includes the study of typography, layout, production methods and career
opportunities. Creative problem-solving using traditional media and the computer.
gdes210: Graphic Design II ___ advanced graphic design concepts which include
analyzing client needs, idea and execution processes, defining successful
elements of good visual communication, defining and analyzing trends of
the graphic design industry. These concepts are explored through advanced
projects utilizing traditional and computer tools.
gdes250: Graphic Design III___ this course focuses on advanced design
problems for the crossover of print media into digital/electronic, interactive
media, and other non-traditional formats as a campaign for communicating and/
or promoting a message or ideas.
gdes245: Web Design___concept and message development, design and
production, publishing of web sites, visual design, color, typography, and digital
graphics for the web. Text-editing, HTML language, web-authoring, and imageediting software are used.
gdes255: Advanced Web Design___ advanced site management, visual design,
implementing style sheets for text formatting and layout, adding media;
designing with XHTML/HTML5 and CSS, image-editing software, Dreamweaver
and Flash.
gdes264: Portfolio—Graphic Design___ students select, refine, and present a

Graphic Design portfolio, develop interviewing techniques and employment
search skills. A gallery exhibition, digital portfolio, and review by industry
professionals are also part of this course. Students are in their last semester of
the Graphic Design A.A.S. program.
gdes290: Graphic Design Internship___students learn job-searching skills and
gain real world experience with the opportunity to utilize learned graphic
design skills. The experience involves duties associated with entry-level
graphic design.
Central Missouri State University/UCM (2002—2006):
art3640: Package Design___the study of packaging and point-of-purchase
graphics from concept to client presentation is the focus of this course. The
student will be expected to exhibit a fundamental knowledge of various
packaging and point-of-purchase forms and materials using type, art, color, and
form to convey an image and sell a product.
art2610: Introduction to Commercial Art___the student is expected to exhibit a
fundamental knowledge of the commercial artist’s craft through the application of
information derived from lectures, readings and research to studio assignments
in areas such as: advertising design, publication design, type usage, logotypes, package design and illustration. Computer applications taught: Adobe
Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, QuarkXpress.
art3610: Typography___this course examines letterforms, their origins,
contemporary trends, and usage in the field of graphic design. Visual exploration
of the communicative possibilities of type for the graphic designer, through
application and execution.
art1315: Design I___as the first course of a three-course sequence, Design I
introduces the use of the visual elements within the context of the principles
of design. The course primarily explores two-dimensional design in an
achromatic mode.
art1325: Design II___ this course provides an opportunity for the student to
expand their design knowledge and skills through the exploration of color and
its relationship to visual unity. Additional terminology is introduced to broaden
the student’s design perceptions and creative abilities. The dimension of color is
studied both in terms of historical usage, as well as through project experience.

Longview Community College (2001—2006):
art102 & art202: Computers in Design I & II___ an introduction to the computer
as a design tool where students learn how to use the software to design layouts,
create graphics, format type, and prepare imagery for the production of graphic
design projects. Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are used.
art245: Web Design___concept, development, design and production,
registration and launching of web sites. Visual design, color, typography, digital
images and illustrations are stressed. HTML language, Adobe Dreamweaver,
Photoshop, and Illustrator are used.
art110/111/112: Drawing I, II, III___these courses introduce basic principles
of design and pictorial composition. Students explore different drawing
techniques while developing their style of expression through a variety of
media and subject matter to increase proficiency in skills and technique.
art220/221/222: Painting I, II, III___these courses introduce basic principles
of design and pictorial composition. Students explore different painting
styles with an emphasis on the development of visual perception and color
problems through the use of various painting media to increase proficiency
in skills and technique.
