Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
World Mission Sunday
– Fr. Paul Gins, O.S.M.
In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew
22:15, 17-21, the Pharisees ask questions of Jesus to test him. “Is it lawful to
pay the census tax…? If he answers
yes, he can be condemned as disobedient to God’s Law, a collaborator with a hateful occupying power. If he answers no, then he has violated the
laws of the Emperor. Jesus refuses to draw a sharp
line between religious observance and political engagement. Instead, without taking sides, he obliges the
Pharisees to do their own thinking. “Repay to God
what belongs to God”. © LTP The upcoming election
will require an informed conscience. Carefully read
each candidate’s position on issues and make a Gospel choice. Media ads seldom present the total picture.
Pope Frances wrote “World Mission Sunday is a
privileged moment in which the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity of the young Churches in mission lands.” Today
the Archdiocese of St. Louis takes up the annual collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith
and its support of 1,150 young mission dioceses. I
thank you for whatever support that you were able to
give in the envelope included in your packet. Additional
envelopes, which can be placed in next week’s collection, are in the entryway. The thrust of this year’s program was to assist the growth of the Church in Mongolia whose needs are representative of the poor in
the world’s missions. By reaching out today, you
helped them and other faith communities build their
Church.
Building the Domestic Church: “The Family Fully Alive”
is an initiative of the Knights of Columbus that started
this month and continues for twelve months. There is
a Psalm of the Month that can be used every Sunday
at your family prayer time. October’s is Psalm 105:
O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name,
Make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him,
Tell of all his wonderful works!
Glory in his holy name;
Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
October 19, 2014
Seek his presence continually!
Remember the wonderful works that he has done,
His miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of Abraham his servant,
Sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
He is mindful of his covenant forever of the word that he
commanded, for a thousand generations,
The covenant that he made with Abraham,
His sworn promise to Isaac,
Which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
As your portion for an inheritance.”
It’s not too early to mark the next event in our four part
series of educational outreach. The Alzheimer Society of St. Louis will give a presentation in our Church
at 7pm on Monday December 1st. Invite family members, neighbors, caregivers, etc. to attend. This is for
the parish and neighborhood. We are all touched in
some way by this dreaded disease. Will this be in our
future? Come and have questions answered.
Copies of the State of the Parish Report are in the
sacristy. A word of thanks goes to our communications
committee and (PAC) the Pastors Advisory Committee
for their assistance in preparing this annual report.
Recent bulletins have included the results of the Parish August 23rd Survey. Over 20 parishioners volunteered to assist to work through some of the questions
that were raised. A meeting will be called to take advantage of this interest. Thank you
.
Thanks to those who planned and worked the October
18th Oktoberfest. (Those at the 4:30 Mass – come on
over.) It is great to have monthly gatherings such as
this. Do you have an idea for November?
The recent Trash Bag Fundraiser brought in over
$1,550 for the parish. This was a former school and
HCA event that they decided they wouldn’t have this
year. Thank you to Melanie Fechter and the volunteers
who coordinated and picked up this opportunity.
Seek the Lord and his strength,
We welcome all who come to worship with us. If you wish to join our Parish Faith Community, or have a change in your
contact information, kindly complete the following form. You can return this to the Priory Office, place in the collection
basket or give it to a Priest or Deacon.

Did You Know?
 Do you forget your envelopes?
 Do you forget to mail your Parish
Contribution?
 Are you always rushed preparing for Mass and
unable to find your check book?
 Do you reach into your pocket or purse at Mass and
realize you have no cash?
Problem solved. It is called Electronic Giving or Direct
Debiting.
Just contact the Business Office and speak with Gail.
She will get a form to you for completion and your account can be directly debited for the designated
amount of your choice.
Another option is to contact your bank and have a
check automatically mailed to SHF at whatever time
you designate. Most banks will do this for no charge.
We appreciate any and all support from our very generous parishioners.
Your Weekly Donations For
October 5, 2014
$12868 was collected in contribution envelopes to the General Fund. This money
helped defray the cost of the August elevator maintenance totaling $245.05. Your generosity is most appreciated.

2015 Mass Book Is Now Open
Please place your Mass requests IN
WRITING (including substitution dates)
and drop in the collection basket or mail to
the Priory Office. Requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. If your request cannot be filled,
the closest available date will be substituted. Stipend for a Mass is $10, and the offering for a Sanctuary
Light is $15. For the first few months the book is open,
you will be limited to 2 Sundays/Saturdays at 4:30pm
and 5 weekdays. This is in order to accommodate
everyone’s requested dates.
On the Hearts on Fire retreat, teens listen to talks, spent
time in small groups, participated in Holy Mass Saturday
with Fr. Bob and Sunday with Annunciation Parish, spent
a holy hour in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and
many took the opportunity to receive the sacrament of
Reconciliation. Teens spent time engaging scripture, enjoying recreation, preparing and serving their own
meals, and took time to reflect on their relationship with
God. The older teen leaders and the younger retreats
worked together to grow in community and to light our
hearts on fire for Christ.
