TODAY'S READINGS
First Reading -- The LORD said to Cyrus, his
anointed, "I am the LORD, there is no other" (Isaiah
45:1, 4-6).
Psalm -- Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96).
Second Reading -- Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the
church of the Thessalonians: We thank God always for
all of you (1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b).
Gospel -- Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God
what is God's (Matthew 22:15-21).
The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International
Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord's "anointed." Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of
the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who
gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great king, but "I am the
LORD and there is no other," says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today's Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the
passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into
speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due his position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are
faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us
that our call and the power to be faithful come from God.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of St. Gertrude Parish is to
proclaim Jesus Christ as Savior:
in Word, in Worship, in Service,
and in Witness.
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of
Deacon Charlie:
I recently read an interesting
thought in a publication called
THE WAY, offered by the Catholic
Education Center, with focus on family.
"When I was a young man, I wanted to change the
world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried
to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the
nation, I began to focus on my hometown. I couldn't change
the town, and as I got older, I tried to change my family.
Now as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is
myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed
myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could have indeed
have changed the world."
Little do we sometimes realize how significant what we
do can become or how much positive influence we can impact on others. It begins with US.
Deacon Charlie

School News
Dear St. Gertrude Parish,
It was proven to me again this week that we have the
most wonderful students in all the Archdiocese at our school. I
was approached by a member of the parish who had recently lost
a loved one. She told me that as the procession of cars was approaching the church, the family noticed that our students were
out on the playground at recess. As the hearse drove past the
playground, a group of students stopped what they were doing
and put their hand over their heart as the hearse drove by (the
funeral was for a veteran). The family was very moved by this
sincere gesture displayed by our students.
This is another example of the kind of compassion our
students are taught to display on a daily basis, to the point where
it becomes automatic. In my 18 years in Catholic education, I
cannot say I have ever been around such a kind-hearted, polite
group of students.
God bless!
