and Sandy Baker received honorable mention. A huge
Thank you goes out to our panel of Judges: Terry Barlow,
Mike Riley, Greg Nijak and Sherry McDonald.
Entertainment was provided by Joe DiGorgio. The music
was fabulous. Thanks to all our Sponsors and Volunteers.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Pink medic to help raise breast cancer awareness.
By Amanda Crowe and Courtesy of the Fairborn Daily Herald. Edited from the original article.
TheFairborn firefighters are turning up the heat on breast cancer with their awareness campaign
and a big part of their effort is bringing the first pink vehicle to Greene County. With a focus on
showing support, providing awareness, and giving back hope, members of Fairborn Professional
Firefighters Local 1235 are raising money for the Pink Ribbon Girls organization. They have
enlisted the help of long-time patient Angela Flatter to organize their fund-raising events.
Firefighter John Howard, who is a medic at Station No. 4, asked Flatter to co-chair the Breast
Cancer awareness campaign. One of Flatter’s biggest projects has been getting Fairborn their own pink breast cancer
awareness vehicle. The City of Fairborn donated a decommissioned medic vehicle to this year’s campaign. It has been
wrapped in pink with the “Turning Up the Heat” logo. The Local 1235 unveiled the pink medic at the government center in
August and will be parked outside the Center on October 23rd during our Health Fair. Anyone can write a message of hope
or sign the medic with a $5 donation. All proceeds will benefit the Pink Ribbon Girls’ mission to provide personalized
support to young women throughout all phases of the breast cancer journey through education, outreach, awareness, and
one-on-one support to women and their families. For more information visit their website at pinkribbongirls.org. For more
DAY-TRIPS
Horseshoe Casino, Cincinnati.
Our anticipated trip to Hollywood
Gaming at Dayton Raceway went
South. ...Literally. Unfortunately,
the new Gaming Racino couldn’t
offer us any group discounts and
does not have a buffet. If you’re
still interested in going to the new
Dayton Raceway, let me know. In the meantime, the folks down at the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati offered us some
enticements to visit. Every Wednesday is their Super Senior Wednesday where all seniors 55 and over receive a free
buffet lunch. Seniors will also be able to swipe their Total Rewards cards at Promotional Kiosks and be entered into a
drawing to win $55 dollars in free slot play. They draw 5 names every hour on the hour between 12pm and 5pm. Cost for
this trip is $25, due when signing up at the front desk. Discounts are dependent upon 25 people going. Please note that
a valid picture I.D. is required for this trip. Wednesday, October 15th, 8:00am arrive at the Center. Depart at 8:30am.
DAY-TRIP CANCELATION POLICY AND CONSIDERATIONS
Please notify the Activities Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the event in order to receive a refund. All day-trip
cancelations will incur a $5.00 service charge, unless the cancelation is due to an emergency. If canceled after two weeks
prior to the event, no refund will be given. Limited of room on chartered bus trips for walkers and wheelchairs.

CARE COORDINATION
The OSHIIP-certified Care Coordination staff can guide you through the complicated Medicare process.
Before you turn 65 or change an existing Medicare plan, make an appointment to discuss your options. The
staff also directs clients to sources for house and yard work, transportation, personal care, shopping, meals,
and home health care. In addition, they provide crisis intervention for eviction, food, utility shut-off, and
family issues. You might be surprised how they can help you. Reach Care Coordination at: 878-4141,
extension 215. We are in need of volunteers!
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT begins October 15th and runs through
December 7th. It is time to go over your Medicare Advantage or Drug plans
to see if they are going to continue to cover you as well as they have this
year or if there are changes of coverage or costs to consider. Have they
dropped any of their list of medical providers such as doctors, hospitals or
lab facilities? Are you on Medicare AND Medicaid? If so, it is likely you’ve
been put into MyCare Ohio by the State and have been assigned to a
managed care plan, either Buckeye or Molina. This is all new to some 29
counties in Ohio and Greene County is one of them. It may be very
confusing to unravel all of this and if it is stressful for you please give us a
call and we will try to help you. We will need an appointment made for any
assistance and we will need specific information from you in order to do plan comparisons. Medicare checkup day for all of Greene County is October 22nd at the Xenia Community Center, Xenia, Oh.
HEAP applications will be available here soon and we have three people to help you fill them out and to make
copies of your originals to send along. This year you may re-verify PIPP Plus along with it at the same
time. So for that you may need a little more information however that is all explained on the application form
itself.

TRANSPORTATION
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
With the arrival of October, when you call and book your ride, you will start to hear us give that
familiar warning “Weather Permitting” that is near and dear to all of our hearts. Why so soon you
may ask? Well the reason is very simple; the term doesn’t just pertain to ice and snow. FOG can be
a real NO GO situation. We will try our best to take you at your scheduled times, but SAFETY is a
main concern. We may have to cancel some or all transportation on any given day. If we are going to
have to cancel any transportation, we will try to notify those effected clients as soon as we can. You
may also listen to the radio WHIO – 1290AM/95.7FM, check the local TV Channel 7 and/or their
Internet sites for closing and cancellation announcements. The Fairborn Senior Center telephone
greeting may also have the information, so just call the Fairborn Senior Center at 878-4141. Finally,
remember that just because the Fairborn Schools are on delay or canceled, doesn’t mean we are
delayed or canceled, they have to start their routes much earlier than we do.
Whenever the Winter weather gets really bad and you know that your walk or driveway/parking lot
has not been cleared of ICE and/or SNOW, PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE at 878-4141 Ext 216 and
CANCEL YOUR RIDE. If you do not cancel and our driver arrives to pick you up and he or she sees and
thinks that you DO NOT have a CLEARED AND SAFE way from your residence to our vehicle, he or she
will notify you and the Transportation Services office about the situation and your trip that day will be
canceled.
As an additional reminder to all of our Transportation Services clients: Fall is here and Winter isn’t far
behind. Which means sidewalks, driveways, etc., start to get slick. Therefore, all of us must think
about OUR OWN and the Transportation Services driver’s SAFETY. This means that all clients MUST
keep the sidewalks, driveways, etc., from your residences to and from the vehicles, CLEAR of wet or
dry leaves, sticks, SNOW and ICE, so that nobody slips and falls and possibly breaks something
important like their arms, legs, hips or head. THANKS for your cooperation in making sure these
obstacles to safety are removed!

third Wednesday at noon, here at the Fairborn Senior
Center. October 15th.
Coffee and Conversation. Just need to talk it
out? Come share some Coffee & Conversation with
Ciela Ledbetter-Guckian of the Hospice of the Miami
Valley. We all experience grief when we lose
something of value to us. Retirement, down-sizing,
loss of a pet, disabilities, death of a loved one and
many other losses bring on a variety of emotions and
physical reactions. It is healing and helpful to have
others to talk things through with. You are not
alone. Hope to see you on the 2nd Tuesday of the
month at 1:00 pm. October 14th.
Free Hearing Aid Clinic, provided by Fairborn
Hearing Aid Center, 209 West Main Street, on the

Attorney David Cusack hosts the Legal Hour. A
completed funeral and burial plan can be a
fantastic gift for your survivors. Why should you
consider funeral/burial pre-planning? Do you have
to pre-pay in order to complete a plan with a funeral
home? Can you name the person who will handle
these things after you die? Attorney David J. Cusack
from Beavercreek will answer those questions and
more. The 4th Tuesday of the month, October
28th, at 2:00pm.
The R.A.P. (Relative as Parents) group, designed for

caregivers, meets the second Tuesday at 10:00am
