Better that only a few Catholics should be left, staunch and sincere in their religion, than that they should, remaining many, desire as it were, to be in collusion with the Church’s enemies and in conformity with the open foes of our faith. St. Peter Canisius S.J. So valuable to heaven is the dignity of the human soul that every member of the human race has a guardian angel from the moment the person begins to be. WORLD PRIEST DAY “O how great is the priest! If he realized what he is he would die. God obeys him: he utter a few words and the Lord descends from heaven at his voice, to be contained within a small host…St. John Vianney. October 12th $ 9,295.00 We appreciate the generosity of you, our parishioners. When we have a second collection, people tend to split their usual offering between the two collections, which is understandable given the pressure of our economic times. However we rely on the first collection to keep the parish and school going and pay the bills. We ask that if there are two collections you include the usual amount you give in the first collection and do the best you can with the second if you are able to. MIZZI-GILI Greetings to All! Allow me to deviate from my usual column this week and talk about something that is close to my heart- The Sacrament of Holy Orders, specifically the Priesthood. This weekend is World Priest Day. Others have said it and so have I, that without the priesthood there is NO Eucharist and without the Eucharist, there is NO Church!!! The priesthood is much bigger than any one man because this vocation comes from Jesus Christ the High Priest. To serve at the altar and confect the Eucharist is the most humbling and most sacred of responsibilities that I or any bishop or priest has. Recalling my first mass, the number of priests and relatives and friends that came to my first mass was a witness to the importance of the priesthood and NOT me! TO be given the grace and blessing from the Almighty Himself in all my human weakness to do that which can only from God humbles me every time I celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Archbishop Fulton Sheen wrote The Priest is not his Own and in that book, Archbishop Sheen tells us that we must tie ourselves to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross every day. The mass intrinsically unites us to our Lord, Calvary and heaven itself. When we sing the Sanctus ( holy, holy) the gates of the sanctuary are closed and the most magnificent, most gracious of experiences happens- the angels and the Holy Spirit come down upon the altar! If we saw with our eyes what actually is happening, we would be like a child in the corner because we would realize the gravity of the situation and lay on the ground face down because of our unworthiness. Remember the prayer we say before receiving communion- Lord, I am unworthy that you should come under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be saved. The Church is about saving souls- yours and mine alike. When a man enters the seminary, he is asked, why do you want to become a priest?” He answers, “because I want to save my soul.” When we pray that we believe in the things that are visible and invisible, we are saying that we believe in the One who we don’t see, in heaven, he the angels and the saints. Our Lord is the image if the invisible God. Our Blessed Mother manifests her Son our Lord to us and the way to God is through Jesus and to Jesus is through Mary! May the Madonna help me and my brother priests to stay fervent in the faith that we profess week after week and may our Blessed Lord rest in us always. Resta con noi per la vie del mondo Signore! I would like to express my appreciation to Jackie Barton and the members of the Respect Life Society, who have put together the reception and to Mr. George Alessi a member of the Serra Club for all that they do for the priesthood. Thanks so very much!. Grazie Tanti! Buona Domenica! Good Sunday!
