Asquith Golf Club NEWSLETTER October 2014 FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT As this is my first letter to you, our Members, I would like to offer my personal wishes and a very big thank you to our past President Derek Scaife and Board members who work tirelessly for the ongoing improvement of Asquith Golf Club, Members and Visitors. At the Annual General Meeting held on 22nd September 2014, Club Captain David Beal was elected as a Life Member of Asquith Golf Club, a fitting tribute for over 30 years of dedication and loyalty. Congratulations David from the Board, Management, Members and Staff, this created a unique situation as David’s dad, Arthur Beal was also a Life Member of the Club. Matthew Furze, our General Manager has settled in very quickly meeting and greeting members who has bought enthusiastic energy into the role. You will see Matthew inside and outside the Club, on the golf course, at presentations and on Friday night learning the Asquith way of Friday night ballots. To members of the 2014/2015 Board, congratulations on your election, we have exciting times ahead and certain challenges that will stretch us at times. I am very confident that we have the Personnel in place to grow and develop Asquith Golf Club. Good golfing. Sandra Death President Asquith Golf Club. Lord Street Mt Colah Ph 9477 1266 Email: [email protected] Website: www.asquithgolfclub.com.au FROM THE WOMEN’S BUNKER Melbourne Cup Day is nearly upon us and we hope you have organised a team. Don’t forget that there will be a prize for the best individual hat and also for the best team hats. The Singles Championships have concluded and our congratulations go to the following players: Division I (0-21) Winner Runner Up Darrie Nightingale Maree Simmons 266 273 Division II (22 – 30) Winner Runner Up Emmy Kim Soon Park 306 307 Division III (31 – 45) Winner Runner Up Jan Cooper Gail Lawler 344 345 Most women will now be aware that the 110 club has been discontinued. You are now being offered the choice of playing the red or the yellow course. If you wish to play the yellow course, you must advise the Pro Shop as you pay your competition fees so that your card reflects the correct handicap. You will play from the yellow plates, not the dollies of the day, while those playing the red course will play from the red dollies. The scores from the yellow course will be adjusted to reflect the difference in scratch rating between the two courses (red and yellow), so that all players can be on an equal footing in the same competition. It is hoped that this option will suit all players. It is also intended to begin handicapping the 9 hole competition on Thursdays – the score from one day will be automatically captured and combined with the next 9 hole competition played. Presentation Night was a lovely evening for all those who attended, particularly the recipients of the surprise trophies. For those who didn’t attend, join us next year for a relaxing evening catching up with your golfing mates. Our charities for 2015 are Hornsby Hospital and Studio Artes, chosen as a result of a ballot of the ladies. We would also like to remind you that Hams Day is coming up on Thursday 20 November, so organise your teams and invite those visitors to join us. FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN Club Championships 2014 The 2014 Club Championships commenced on August 30th in what was the worst weather conditions in recent memory. Thanks to the drainage works undertaken, particularly on the 13th and 15th, the course was playable however, preferred lies were necessary due to the muddy conditions on the fairways. Following the completion of three rounds, 3 shots separated the top 4 players in A Grade, the top 2 players in A Reserve Grade were tied on 241 and the top players in B and C Grades held 2 and 6 shot leads respectively. The final round was held in near perfect conditions with the course having dried out over the preceding weeks of drying wind and sunshine with the stage was set for an exciting finish. After nine holes the top three players in A Grade were all under par and the battle was on. Rod Paillas held his nerve and maintained his lead over the closing holes to capture his maiden Club Championship with a 3 shot victory over Kristian Hooker. A Reserve Grade saw Ray Agostino shoot a career best 74 to defeat Shane Birt (R/U on a C/B) and Matt Herbert by 6 shots. B Grade saw Mark Bolger hold out for a comfortable 7 shot win over Darren Taylor and C Grade saw Richard King hold off a charge from David Knudsen for a 2 shot victory. Congratulations to all winners and runners up. This is now live and can be viewed on the following webpage – http://ow.ly/Cp0tA. Secondly, in the coming weeks Golf Australia will build on the work of The R&A and open a survey of Australian club administrations. These two pieces of research are being conducted with a view to determining: the true extent of the issue, an understanding of all of the causes, the degree of importance the industry attaches to trying to improve pace of play, and what the most effective strategies will be. The R&A’s survey of individual golfer views and attitudes on pace of play is open to all golfers in every country. In Australia, Golf Australia will promote The R&A survey to the entire GOLF Link database of golfers. This will be done via email which will be sent Friday (10 October). In addition, we would be very grateful if you can help us to assist The R&A by promoting this survey directly to your membership. Many thanks for whatever assistance you can provide in promoting The R&A survey to your club members (http://ow.ly/Cp0tA). Asquith members are encouraged to assist in this research.
